"Ultimately, this is one of the reasons I could never be full-time Mac user. It's not that OS X is a bad operating system; in fact, OS X includes most of the components I'd want out of a good Linux distro. But I don't have the freedom to use the system the way I see fit, the way I can with Ubuntu, Fedora Core, SUSE, or Debian."

Cooooommmmmmmmmeeeeee back lenox!
Hay theBear.
Yellin
hmm.. how can I check to see what sendmail was compiled with (USE=?)
zaei
I don't think that data is stored.
theBear
mornng zaei
Yellin
My sendmail is not allowing any one to authenticate successfully.. it has feature("local_procmail") set =/ our admin is missing in action and I am trying to fill in. I have no idea if the problem is in procmail, or sendmail etc
theBear
err... for gentoo systems i think look in err.... /var/db/pkg/pkg-category/packagename/USE
don't think it was there in the old days, but its damned handy
zaei
theBear: Oooh, really?
Yellin
Ethereal packets show 250-AUTH DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 - but outlook users arnt auth'ing... need to allow for more auth options
theBear
i think so... sure looks that way
zaei
Cuz that would make /etc/portage/package.use obsolete.
theBear
err... it would ?
maybe it would... but it would be kinda messy... very messy
zaei
Sure... only reason we use that is to make sure that when you emerge world you get the right use flags for everything.
If it's stored automatically per package, you don't need that anymore.
theBear
indeed, but this db doesn't do that, it is just a record... a rebuild STILL doesn't use the options mentioned in there...
Viza
it's probably volatile though
zaei
Yeah, I know it doesn't use it, but it probably should.
It would be a hell of a lot cleaner.
theBear
plus if you then wanted to set USE for a new package you would have to make the skeleton build dir from scratch....
tho it WOULD mean that you could set chost/cflags/everything per package....
zaei
Ooh, check this idea out...
emerge x
portage finds ebuild for x.
Viza
hm not all the packages have USE
zaei
makes a file /location/of/x/x.conf
theBear
interesting....
zaei
puts current USE, CFLAGS, etx into x.conf
Viza
$ locate "/USE" | wc -l
567
zaei
uses x.conf instead of make.conf
That would be pretty aweet.
theBear
hmmm... something like that could work, but i like it better that instead of x.conf it makes a skeleton dir in /var/db...
zaei
sweet*
Ah, that would work too.
Viza
oh hm, lots of info in /var/db/pkg
so then it would be in /var/db/pkg/mail-mta/sendmail-*/USE
theBear
anyone know how... WOW ! tree -l2 rocks !
Viza
tree -L2 ?
theBear
i wonder if that dir replaces the world file? or if the world file is still used... ie. to clone a system you could just move the new dirs from /var/db to the new system and emerge world.... or -e world maybe... seeing as they are all already "installed" :)
yeah... that... L2
Viza
actually it'd have to be tree -L 2
picky program
