davidf
hello everybody.
is it possible in gentoo to backup the entire file system and the restore it to another machine?
zaei
tar
davidf
I am building a infokiosk and I have istalled the prototype and now I need a way to replicate this instalation on more machines.
the machines are hardware indentical.
zaei
tar
davidf
is it possible to create a instalation CD that will do this?

zaei
Probably.
davidf
I know tar is a way of doing it.
I guess I could backup the entire hda. and the on the new machine to untar it?
zaei
Yes.
davidf
is it possible to work like that.
zaei
Yes.
You'll have to do all of the partitioning, though.
And set up grub or whatever.
But that's easy enough.
davidf
and I think that on the new instalation I will be forced to re run the grub instalation ?
yes that's easy.
I just spent 4 day configuring the machine and I dont like to spend so much for the others.
should I backup /proc or /dev?
i guess not? right?
or should I only excule the /proc.
I think /dev will not be recreated by the operating system.
or am I wrong?
zaei
Probably correct.
Haven't ever done something like this =)
Ah, Ash*taka is the one to talk to about tarring =)
davidf
well my /dev/hda3 is 4 gb the is the /
Ash*taka what about the /proc
this also recreated at boot ..
right.
ok I thought of that.
anyway is it possible to create a more automatic instaltion from this backup?.
i guess I can do it with some simple scripts. and put everythig on a DVD
and then just boot with the dvd and the run my script.
ok then.
thanks for advices
I will give it a try.
o I still have one last question
after I untar the system I have to chroot to it and after that I setup grub right?

hello
how do i change the screen resolution? thanks
Psych
hi cyclic
cyclic
hey
I'm creating a new partition for my root filesystem on my normal workstation -- I have used ReiserFS in the past, but just wanted to know if any of you guys are strongly for or against it (since now would be the time to change)
Autie
reiserfs is good
petrock
cyclic, why did you choose reiserfs in the first place?
cyclic
i was reading the gentoo handbook, and it seemed to have good things to say
but I was here one time, and a guy was saying it was terrible for reliability, etc
Autie
guess that was zaei
petrock
cyclic, some of my friends use reiserfs and they like it so far, me im stuck in ext3
HeppyCat
dont use ricerfs on sparc
cyclic
im just using standard x86
HeppyCat
zaei only uses it for portage cache
it hink
cyclic
heh, see, thats what I was looking for...why do you say that Ash*taka?
what should I use instead? just ext3?
HeppyCat
(Action) sticks with ext3
cyclic
what happened>
how do you know its reiserfs' fault?
what the hell...? :
localhost ~ # mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/boot/
mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext3'
how is that possible?
