theBear
oh gay.... i've gotta go visit a server
Freman
(Action) bashes head on kb
it still lets me in )c:

theBear
hehe

What should I do If I keep getting a bogus "Screen0 already has a window manager" warning even after rebooting the machine? Gnome seems hell bent on assuming I'm running a window manager when I'm clearly not.
Is there like some kind of /tmp file screw up I can fix?
any one ever have an issue like this where gnome-session refuses to start?
Freman
hmph
I seem to have locked myself out of a machine
oh wait, some intelligant chap left a ssh connected to it (c:
it was me
I was monitoring the box to make sure it didn't ide break again
I had a top and a log tail running (c:
don't use "MaxAuthTries 1" when keyed sshing... it needs to be 2
(Action) wonders what the side effects of making a users default shell /usr/bin/screen is
crc
Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1 <-- What does this mean?
Gurkan
A snowboard.

crc
Details: serial 547 error_code 8 request_code 72 minor_code 0 Where would this type of error be comming from?
Some one help me out. When trying to connect a client to a Xwindow server hosted on a winxp box I get messages indicating another window manager is already on a given display. I clearly do not have another window manager. What does this mean?
HeppyCat
uuhhh
brain not work
crc
where on earth would my system be keeping information such as weather or not an actual WM is running already.
HeppyCat
i havent even tried to run x on my box yet
crc
ok. If Ive concluded I want to re emerge X such that all its tmp files all its configuration files are going to be reset such that it will install like brand new what command can I use?
same with gnome.
If my config for gnome is borked how do I make it all like brand new with out reinstalling gentoo?
HeppyCat
werlll
crc
whats that?
HeppyCat
there might be some default config files hangin out under /etc
crc
no its really screwed up beyong the etc directory
I'm thinking /var and /tmp must be fu*ked up
HeppyCat
/tmp doesnt matter
crc
well some kind of screwed up stateful information must be hanging around since I'm clearly not running another Window MAnager
vo359@punkass ~ $ gnome-session &

Gnome-Message: gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds: returning -1
The program 'gnome-session' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 528 error_code 8 request_code 72 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
it all worked before. then poof
HeppyCat
just stopped working?
crc
its now convinced I have another Window Manager
yup.
tried to connect from differen't machines
cleaned out the .Xauth files
cleaned out the /tmp
rebooted about a billion times
so far gnome is the only app that refuses to start
KDE complains that another WM is around but starts up anyways
What could possibly be wrong with gnome
and how would I have any idea what thes OP codes mean?
When it says gnome-session recieved an error from X window is it saying my server here on my XP box is returning that error or is this comming from the client side?
HeppyCat
is there some sort of lock file that is written?
crc
yea thats what I'd like to know.
where would I search for that?
thats what this feels like
HeppyCat
that error is coming from the server, not gnome
hail traumahound
traumahound
teh?!?!
crc
I don't get it. I have servers on several machines how can they all be broken at the same time.
traumahound
this box is driving me nuts.
HeppyCat
ive got a ghost of a problem too

crc
Do lock files hide some where else other then /tmp
HeppyCat
somewhat randomly, openssl fires up and munches down on one of my procs
and doesnt stop till i kill it
traumahound
nice.
heh.
HeppyCat
yup
crc
what are .Xauth files for?
HeppyCat
i dont use openssl for anything
crc
whats the command line for opennssl when it starts munching?
HeppyCat
werll i dont know
just see the process running
crc
from "top"?
HeppyCat
yeah
crc
no ssh server or apache?
HeppyCat
i use ssh regulary
sp
apache is installed, but ive never fired it up
crc
next time it happens try "ps -ef | grep openssl" it would be nice to see what process started it.
it almost sounds like its generating a key or some thing
out of the blue
HeppyCat
good idea
crc
and prey its not just being handed over to ini
init
HeppyCat
thinkin about just unmerging it
crc
oh yea use ps -eft to get a tree view
well I guess I'll restore an old backup of /etc and see if anything good comes of it
HeppyCat
for some reason i was thinking openssl was a dep of samba
traumahound
check it for deps
HeppyCat
yay for backups
crc
yea too bad I didn't have one for the entire partition
HeppyCat
i made on the other night. need to swap out the tape i keep at work
crc
I wish I had a tape drive. All I got is tar bzip2 and a DVD burner
HeppyCat
ive got a dds3 drive
traumahound
tape drives are a pain in the ass.
HeppyCat
yeah traumahound, they're not the best by any means
but mine hold 12gb uncompressed
last backup i did was ~8gb
Agios
I hate tape
traumahound
not enough space to back me up.
HeppyCat
took something like 90 minutes
Agios
unreliable crap
unless you spend a few thousand
traumahound
even then.
HeppyCat
bad experience Agios?
Agios
yep, although I never lost any important data.
you don't discover how bad it is until you try to restore
HeppyCat
yeah
traumahound
i want raid 5.
HeppyCat
i havent had to do that yet
Agios
raid 5 is what I did but it's not a backup
traumahound
but no damn way i'm putting that in a single case.
HeppyCat
i use raid5 also, and agios is correct. raid is not a backup
Agios
can't recover from user error and no off site capabilities
HeppyCat
it is fault tolerance
traumahound
i use another hard drive for backups.
Agios
yes, it's great for hardware failures
HeppyCat
ive got two raid5 arrays in the gentoo box
traumahound
nice.
HeppyCat
its got mp3s, backup copy of my docs & pics
crc
pics? ;)
traumahound
hehe...
crc
did some one say pics?
HeppyCat
oh and the pr0n
traumahound
hehe.
HeppyCat
54gb of pr0n currently
crc
well I guess its kde for me then. This sucks. And my OCD dicates that I should really find out what broke gnome-session.
HeppyCat
been meaning to move /home over to the other array
crc
at least when I when connecting from a remote server
HeppyCat
its been sitting there unused
only 25gb
crc
I'm like the only one I know that has all my eggs in one basket. Namely /dev/hda2
traumahound
hehe... emerge -pv pr0nview
HeppyCat
now, in my dvd box i've got 3 120gb drives striped
but nothing important is going onto those. so whatever. it's fast
Freman
(Action) wonders if he can make it so all his ssh logins run screen by default... and that screen auto-locks on inactivity
traumahound
(Action) sets the remaining space up as a swap.
