aoiod
can I emerge a newer version of Xorg without it wrecking things like kde?
a-evol
should be able to just update it, yeah
If you have the latest kde
aoiod
so an 'emerge xorg' will work just like that?
a-evol
emerge --update xorg or something like that
aoiod
ok thanks guys
a-evol
mkay, long time since I touched gentoo really
;)
Gurkan
:)
talk to you later
pinkerton
pwnt!
Gurkan
Zaei would be ok for a drunken 1 nite stand.

zia
guys.. stupid Q, but what exactly gonna happen if i don't update my profile on x86-64 ?
Agios
not much, I suppose you will eventually won't get any updates
zia
well
i got an ancient system that still needs 2005.0 ..
and emerge sync starts dying with
>>> Updating Portage cache: 88%!!! Cannot resolve a virtual package name to an ebuild.
!!! This is a bug, please report it. (virtual/libintl-0)
Mank0r
portage will totally break for you
and upgrading wont be possible
Agios
apparently
zia
and the upgrade page tells to do a emerge -upv system && emerge -uv system
Mank0r
because dependancies etc will disappear, and the upgrade path will break for you
zia
which brings me into a problem
Mank0r
yer, just keep the system up to day
*date
zia
i can't simply just 'do' a emerge system
Mank0r
try removing libintl?
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] virtual/libintl-0 0 kB
dunnow what it is though
zia
dunnow about those profiles
i can openup a long discussion here i think
theBear
hmmmm.... real shadows, real transparency composite magic in xorg7 .... it really CAN work
indeed
pinkerton
srlsy
xorg7 is only ooooh 5 years late tho ;)
theBear
yup... but i got him now.... and he seems towork properly
hmm.... didn't xcompmgr used to have a switch to make non-focused windows go X% transparent ?
Freman
(Action) grumbles... why do they have to attach everything as word documents...
theBear
'cos the corporate world and especially execs and secretaries are STUPID
Freman
I have openoffice, and it's all good and well but wtf it was a 2 line word document, with no formatting... you couldn't just put it in the email?
theBear
i agree completely :)
Freman
note to self... attach open office documents with all my emails to those who attach word docs to me

theBear
oh :( i can't make glxgears transparent
Freman, hehe....
Agios
theBear: you have too much time on your hands
Freman
rofl
I have a linux desktop, I have a pretty window manager (e17 rox ya'll) but I still spend my time with some 30 odd terminals open and almost never use the gui for anything but web browsing
Agios
I probably do half my work in a terminal
][rish
and let's face it... web browsing is 90% of what people do
pinkerton
95%!
100%!!!!11111one4oneoneon4
Gurkan

Question: I am currently installing gentoo on a Celleron computer. Would it be better for me to use the x86 stage or the i686 stage? Thanks.
Not sure, it's about 3 years old.
Is x86 made for 386's?
ok. Thanks for your help Ash*taka.
zia
is the SRC_URI still valid in ebuilds?
sinthetek

I've got a box that after a day of running (don't know exactly how many hours) just stops talking
IE: imap dies, sshd dies, apache dies, etc, etc if I'm logged in and running say 'top' while this happens it doesn't kill top but as soon as I quit top it throws me off the machine )c:
nothing in logs about it
theBear
maybe the filesystem is borking at some point
Freman
I suppose that's a possability...
maybe remote logging might help diagnose that
it's happened twice now
it IS only a cyrix 333 with 64 megs of ram
while I was watching, an awfull lot of things went "defunct
Xse
howdy dowdy
somebody missed me?
s0ulslack

At work, we routinely forward OpenGL over ssh. It works as long as both
machines have the capability of rendering. One just needs to make sure
both of the following options are enabled:
ForwardX11 yes
ForwardX11Trusted yes
those are supposed to be sshd_config options?
s0ulslack
yeah
sinthetek
ok, my portage tree seems to be fu*ked
what should i do?
pinkerton
how does it seem to be fu*ked?

I don't know if you do use reiserfs, but if you use reiserfs4 you probably got messy data trough the fs system. reiser 4 isn't stable
sinthetek
i'm using v3
i accidentally deleted some files and tried to retrieve them with --rebuild-tree and now a lot of sh*t is corrupted
no, i mean with reiserfsck --rebuild-tree
i did an emerge --sync afterwards, that's what most of those errors were from
