_sin
blah im glad this week is over
vml
It isn't over here yet.
_sin
for you
it is for me
vml
:_(
How are you doing?
_sin
tired
ive put in about 24 hours in the last 48
but im off till next tuesday
so i have time to lay around the house some and get other stuff done
vml
Cool, long weekend.
Clean :_D
_sin
its a holiday weekend in the US
SSSH.
yes i will clean
probably tomorrow or sunday
how about you?
good week/etc?
vml
Yes, it was fine.
Holiday today.
_sin
what holiday?

vml
25th of May, we said "fu*k off" to the Spanish king.
Actually, he was captured by Napoleon, so he couldn't do anything :_P
_sin
seems may was a bad month for spain throughout history ;]
vml
Hahah, yeah.
What's the time there?
_sin
1824
vml
How many hours a day you work?
_sin
depends
anywhere between 5-18
just depends on how i am feeling that day
i dont have a schedule
vml
That's cool.
I wish I had a work like that.
_sin
eh its nice and it sucks
i wish i had slow periods
where there wasnt much for me to do
my work is always there
no matter how much i finish, i still have plenty more
vml
Ah.
How many people works with you?
_sin
it really depends on how you define that
how many people perform the same task as me
or how many people are in the same department as me
or how many people are in the same building as me
0 people perform the same task as me, 0 people perform tasks similar to mine
3 people in my department
60-70 people total in the building
vml
Are you the only security expert there?
_sin
the entire building is security experts only
just different functionality
some monitor networks
some do disk forensics
some monitor for fraud, waste and abuse (i.e. surfing porn atwork)
some do penetration testing
etc
vml
Nice.
_sin
most of the groups have overlaps as well
for instance i do everything with a focus on incident response, and then penetration testing as a secondary role
but i often work on the ids, do disk forensics, help analyze network data, etc
im the only reverse engineer though
vml
Is that a good work?
The deparment of police from here called me to work there, on forensics.
_sin
its alright, i cant complain about it a whole lot
vml
I'm not good at it, but they are even worse.
_sin
most police are horrible at disk forensics
even at a federal level
here they're good at using a program, but know nothing of the underlying structures/etc
vml
I guess you have to know the file system structure, how the hardware works, etc
_sin
well for them a lot of the time they don't
but also keep in mind 90% of law enforcement doing cybercrime is relating to child pornography
or at least that is how it is here
so they just need to be able to look at pictures/find pictures/determine age by looking at the picture
im not law enforcement, but i work in conjunction with law enforcement

vml
Well, child pornography isn't very widespread here, and it isn't ilegal to look at child pornography, which is legal is to distribute it.
_sin
i work in part with the nevada cybercrime task force, http://ag.state.nv.us/menu/action_bttn/programs/cyber_crime/cyber_crime.htm
vml
is ilegal
_sin
http://www.nv.doe.gov/nationalsecurity/homelandsecurity/cyberforensics.htm
i didnt follow, which is illegal?
vml
To distribute child pornography, viewing it is "okey".
EwIck
wow. just like mp3s
_sin
here all of the above is illegal
EwIck
that's not disturbing
_sin
but they do sting operations as well
you hear about the police chatting with people telling them that they are an underage teenager
and then setting up a meeting to have sex, and oops its the police and they arrest them
the policia i work with do mostly that
EwIck
yeah, I saw that on america's most wanted
vml
Haha, being a child molester is hard.
It happens on SouthPark too.
_sin
appearantly it was featured on dr. phil recently
aside from that though, the cops are mostly useless
they brought in a linux box one time and booted it up
and when it went to console they couldn't figure out 'what was wrong'
they came over to me and were like 'um, ive got this computer and the mouse doesnt work'
vml
Hahah
Yeah.
I knew a guy that was "security expert" from the police, and he didn't know there was an operating system called OpenBSD.
_sin
im not terribly surprised
whats sad though
is a lot of these fbi guys make more money than i
vml
He didn't understand when I said OpenBSD(open bi es di), I had to spell it in Spanish (open be ese de) and he didn't know it anyway.
What about the deparment of defense?
Are they good?
_sin
they have some good people
but they're mostly an incredible joke
you have to realize their training sucks generally
it pumps out mediocre people who know how to follow orders
technologically speaking
the nsa acquires and pumps out the smartest people
there is smart people everywhere of course though
vml
Hehe
_sin
ive wondered for some time what the cia's it teams are like
i never hear anything about them, ever
vml
Don't you give training to other people?
_sin
me personally?
vml
Yes.
I think that Core does training, for example.
_sin
i do some, not a whole lot
afk on the phone
vml
I go to sleep now, ttyl.
