exit.s:31: Error: no such instruction: `mov1 $0,%ebx
tiocsti
mov1?
krenz_
why is giving me this error?

_exe
movl I gues :_p
tiocsti
(Action) points and laughs
_exe
Haha
toro
;)
krenz_
i'm sorry, just started
that is the example in the tutorial
tiocsti
its MOVL in lower case, as in move long
not move one
krenz_
sh*t
thanks a lot lol
apreciate it
exit.s:0: Warning: end of file in comment; newline inserted
and this is?
_exe
Bleh, it's a warning, ignore it (??)
tiocsti
you prob eneded the file on a comment without a newline at its end
krenz_
thanks
that was it lol
another question, i'm on linux x86
what's a good editor?
tiocsti
vim
krenz_
can i use VI?
_exe
You can use whatever you want, vim, vi, emacs, gedit, abiword, etc.
krenz_
what about Emacs?
tiocsti
i don't know if you can use vi, i can.
_exe
Hahaha
TCA
I can, too
tiocsti
i only used emacs once for like 5 mins, i didnt like it
it was a long time ago, though
krenz_
yeah same here lol
just opened it, look around, said fu*k it
_exe
It's about practice.

tiocsti
everyone [at work] was using it, so i gave it a try
_exe
I have to use it at univ., but I use vim at home.
toro
(Action) tries to access the memory location [at work] but fails

winbl0wz ftw!

mac ftw!
MarchHare
Question: Intel 8086 jumps: Should I pad a NOP after a jump (conditional or nonconditional)?
_exe
no :_/
tiocsti
marchhare, are you asking if they have delay branches? the answer is no.
MarchHare
Is there a reason I'm seeing this in something I've disassembled (It seems fairly reasonable)
tiocsti
probably alignment
MarchHare
Yes, I was wondering about delay branches. I wasn't sure, and couldn't find anything specific. As for the alignment, what's a good way to make sure the disassembler stays aligned? If the disassembler gets unaligned, and thinks something is a jmp, wouldn't that get me in deeper if I'm using jumps to figure it out?
tiocsti
no, i mean code executes faster if aligned, so you will often see some nops to align instructions in some cases
MarchHare
Oh, ok. Like a nop after a jump.
tiocsti
yeah
MarchHare
That makes sense...
tiocsti
although its usually between functions
MarchHare
My question still applies about the disassembler itself.
tiocsti
disassemblers are pretty smart, however, somethings are just impossible for them to do
for example, if you use a runtime computer jump, then the disassembler cant know about it
thats why ida is interactive
MarchHare
Is IDA free?
tiocsti
no
MarchHare
Is there one that is?
tiocsti
for what os?
MarchHare
Win32
tiocsti
yeah theres, err, proview
MarchHare
And that's free?
tiocsti
yes, but not as good as ida
http://pvdasm.reverse-engineering.net/
MarchHare
Well, seeing as how it's open-source, it's better than IDA
tiocsti
no
toro
open source is gay
utterly gay
tiocsti
the one has nothing to do with the other
toro
i dont have words to describe how gay it is.
MarchHare
Yes, and software that requires my cash is gay.
toro
my fault, i'm sorry
why have power if you cannot abuse it?
(Action) hums innocently to himself
stool
there is a free version of IDA though..
tiocsti
yeah i was gonna mention it, but meh
4.2 or somethin
toro
doesn't matter, if it's not open source, it's not the best =)
that kid never heard of warez before??
TCA
Toro
erm..
Were you going to unban him?
toro
oh, forg0rt
forgty*
forgot*
what was his name aagain?
TCA
marchhare
toro
ok, gimme a second
TCA
(Action) taps his foot
toro
x is laggin?
ah
hahhaha
forgot to tyope who to send it to
rofllol
there
i hope nobody is named unban
haha
omg, there is a guy with that name
poor bastard
you know this guy tc?a?
TCA
No. But he made a grammatically correct plea.
Have to admire that.
toro
okey
good enough
MarchHare
I'm not real sure why I was kicked, actually.
TCA
We're evil bastards.
toro
but if he says again that open source is better than the actual software, i'll ban him again
TCA
Fair enough.
MarchHare
I never said anything was better than anything else.
toro
open source is gay. sure you get the read the code, but that is not an excuse not to use a disassembler!
<MarchHare> Well, seeing as how it's open-source, it's better than IDA
tiocsti
eh? opensource is actual software, but it's just a different distribution mechanism
toro
there you did. open source >> better than all features of ida.
tiocsti
making it neither superior nor inferior to software distributed in other ways
toro
tio: yeah i know, but he assumed open sources was best
so i banned him
:P
TCA
Oh, man.. you dissed IDA?
Bad you
MarchHare
Actually, it wasn't a philosophical thing "open-source is better". It was more "I don't have $$$ to shell out for commercial software"
tiocsti
there is a freeware ver of ida i didnt mention
toro
warez my friend, warez.
TCA
Be glad rix wasn't here to see that or he would have sent his russian mafia friends after you
toro
you did mention it, tio, but he was gone by then
(Action) nods his head at TCA
MarchHare
I didn't dis IDA. I just didn't care to pay for it.
TCA
Russians have to eat, too!
MarchHare
I'm sure IDA is decent, just it's more than I can afford.
tiocsti
in terms of disassemblers, ida is orders of magnitudes greater than anything else
stool
for win32 aye
tiocsti
the disassembler you happen to be using is worthless entirely, as it doesnt even do flow analysis
toro
(Action) nods his head at tio
MarchHare
I might have to look at it.
TCA
Seriously, though.. I don't care either way. Debuggers are for wimps.
MarchHare
I've noticed nasm doesn't do flow anything. I have to put my labels in myself.
toro
tca does it hardcore
TCA
I do
