hello ! i want install tor-arm in my debian jessie but apt-get install tor-arm return "Package tor-arm is not available".any idea ?
kernelcorn
thanks for the help cacahuatl, it's working now and I've blocked outbound DNS on my firewall just to be sure. Much appreciated.
wgreenhouse
kernelcorn, cacahuatl: fwiw you can run tor dnsport on a nonstandard port if you want, if you use a caching resolver like dnsmasq as the "real" 127.0.0.1 resolver listed in /etc/resolv.conf and then have its upstream be tor dnsport (as dnsmasq does accept weird non-dns ports)
there's probably no reason to do this unless you're combining Tor DNSPort with something else, though, like torified Unbound
kernelcorn
I just added "DNSPort 127.0.0.2:53" to my torrc per your suggestion, modified my network connection to say "Automatic (DHCP) Addresses Only", then specified 127.0.0.2 as the DNS server
the setting doesn't seem to be applied if I try that through Network Settings, but it works through Network Connections
probably a bug with Ubuntu's Network Manager
wgreenhouse
kernelcorn: I don't know Network Manager well (I eschew the Network Mangler whereever possible!), but you will need to prevent DHCP from supplying its own (the router/gateway's list of) DNS servers
kernelcorn: tails might have something relevant in its config, because I believe they do use networkmanager
kernelcorn: in my case it's a "nohook resolv.conf" line in /etc/dhcpcd.conf, which translates to "don't mangle our resolve.conf kthx"
leave my manual dns server settings alone
kernelcorn
I've confirmed that there is no DHCP-supplied DNS server
wgreenhouse
kernelcorn: I wonder if there's a way to make networkmanager globally adhere to resolv.conf
rather than making it a network-connection-level setting
kernelcorn
it's a connection-level setting, so if I choose a different network the setting won't be applied. It's okay, I'm satisfied with this solution and it's easy to reconfigure without digging to deeply into the system.

Grr... trying to setup Putty to work with my portable Tor. Not sure how to tell if it's a local issue or if a lot of shell providers block tor connections :-P
cacahuatl
"portable Tor"?
Tregarious
Everything on a flash drive
err... usb stick drive... whatever you kids call it these days :-P
mrphs
what socks port is it listening to?
cacahuatl
if it's Tor Browser then SOCKS5 to 127.0.0.1:9150 as the proxy should work, if it doesn't then it's probably the shell provider
mrphs
if tor browser, it's 9150
what cacahuatl said
Tregarious
Ah... the howto i found said 9050. Cool, thanks!
cacahuatl
9050 is the default but Tor Browser uses 9150 so the two don't conflict.
mrphs
but just so you know, putty and windows might leak your stuff. if you wanna be sure, use tails
Tregarious
mrphs, yeah I don't usually do anything but game from Windows. But this is for remote work
bobn0mn0m
w98+putty and no problems
Tregarious
bobn0mn0m, lol. There probably are a few internet cafe's with 98 running :-P
lelope
im here for my daily beating
Tregarious
mrphs, on the drive is Kali and the windows based tor stuff with Putty. If possible I'll boot whatever machine to Linux on the stick.
mrphs
just a friendly reminder: please dont use tor for offensive stuff?
it ruins it for all whose life/work is dependent on it
lelope
yes Tregarious please stop sharing child pornography and violence over tor!
Tregarious
Lol. I'm a founding member of condemnation.org. lelope_
lelope_

Tregarious
boredom... trolling #freenode from a shell account via BitchX :-P

I have read some dock about bridge and im still not shure what it is , does client do a socks5 connection to my server without encryption ?
cacahuatl
No, a bridge is just an unpublished relay that acts as a guard.
Some provide pluggable transports so they talk OR through some other protocol, to make it harder to distinguish it as OR
But it's never sent plaintext
Guest716
guard isin't it the node that do de the encryption (like whats included in the tor bundle )
cacahuatl
Nope, the tor browser is a client only. The guard is the first hop that you choose.
Guest716
ok, so TorBundle(3layers encryption) >> secret bridge >> relay node >> exit note ?
cacahuatl
Yup, it's just like normal Tor except you're selecting a guard that is harder to block because it's not published in the consensus
Guest716
ok, it's just an unpublished guard, nothing special
I did not see any config for guard , did I have to setup enable the possibility of being a guard something or it's automatic ?
ncl
a relay is assigned guard after it meets certain bandwith/uptime limits
cacahuatl
they're normally picked automatically
clients, like tor browser, aren't relays and so won't be guards
Guest716
k
all good :) thx for your time guys/girls
just found by 2013 it was : the unmeasured phase (days 0-3) where it gets roughly no use, the remote-measurement phase (days 3-8) where load starts to increase, the ramp-up guard phase (days 8-68) where load counterintuitively drops and then rises higher, and the steady-state guard phase (days 68+).

hi all
kernelcorn
hi Jose
CooloutAC
hello all after trying to update my tor-browser bundle it no longer works
it asked said click ok to restart, but then nothing happened
even trying to reinstall the browser isn't working, not sure whats going on
cacahuatl
Any errors?
CooloutAC
nope
nothing
its like nothing is happening
normally i would just change to directory and do ./start-tor-browser but nothing
i even added the ppa and installed it that way and same issue
cacahuatl
er, there is no official PPA
Where are you installing it from?
CooloutAC
ok fine, but even that "unofficial" ppa is not working
i downloaded it from the tor site
clicked ok to update, and now nothing
it dissappeared and died lol
cacahuatl
Also the script is now in tor-browser-en-US/Browser/start-tor-browser
since like, 4.5?
CooloutAC
ok?
well its not working
nothing happens when i run it
imJustTextOnScreen
is an old process still runing ?
CooloutAC
imJustTextOnScreen, i even rebooted
imJustTextOnScreen
k
CooloutAC
I think something got corrupted during the update attempt or something I have no clue
cacahuatl
It wouldn't matter if you'd performed a clean reinstall
eg, deleted the old tor browser and re-extracted the new one
CooloutAC
cacahuatl, so what should I do?
go back to windows and keep my ass off linux? lol
cacahuatl
Run it with -v to see if you get any output?
CooloutAC
ok
