does Pidgin still leak DNS or is setting proxy to localhost/9050 (running Tor) all you have to do to use Pidgin safely with Tor?
Raiz
polm: if you're in Tails you have nothing to worry about, but...
polm
Raiz: but? and what if not?
Raiz
if you're not in Tails use a IRC client...
Pidgin sucks
polm
that is quite mild explanation, I am sorry.
Raiz
use Hexchat instead of pidgin and set the proxy settings to 127.0.0.1 9050 SOCKS5
then you have nothing to worry about...
polm
so in Pidgin I do have something to worry about.
Raiz
DNS leaks?
polm
that is what I asked about. But answer 'if you use Tails, then you have nothing to worry about' is slightly not giving any useful information.

cacahuatl
It's a question for pidgin rather than Tor.
Raiz
find someone else who do then...
cacahuatl
Your question is "Does pidgin properly use SOCKS5?"
kvm234
does it?
cacahuatl
You might have better luck asking in tails to see if they had to apply any special patches or configuration options to ensure it obeyed the proxy settings.
Or directly asking the pidgin developers, rather than the Tor community, who don't maintain the software.
Raiz
or better yet use a IRC client and the problem fixed...
cacahuatl
no it's not
fusebox
there are more IRC clients than there are days of the year, it's a minefield
polm
cacahuatl: I was only keen to ask here if many people uses such IM, someone could know how does it work with Tor. Understand your concern though.
cacahuatl
We know how it works with Tor but making a guarantee of "it doesn't leak" isn't easy.
polm
cacahuatl: These things can't be tested anyhow?
cacahuatl
Because that's not Tor's side of things, that's how pidgin is handling proxying it's connections.
polm
Get it.
cacahuatl
In theory, if it uses SOCKS5 properly with the remote hostname lookup option, it should not leak.
That's as best as I can put it, how it works in practise is a much more complex situation.
polm
Well, okey. Thanks for your input anyway.

yo
a_beautiful_mime
uhhh
i've got TBB but the korean characters don't seem to be showing up
is there some kind of annon plugin for translation?
grifball
a_beautiful_mime: what OS are you using?
also do you want them translated? Or just displayed as korean characters (not boxes)
I fixed this issue on debian by installing the package "fonts-nanum" through debian's package manager
now characters are properly displayed
cacahuatl
Yes, a font with symbols for them and the correct character encoding is the solution. Somewhat non-related to Tor Browser. Although maybe with the next release, I think it's doing some stuff with fonts.

Hello.
jackbauer
hi
mylencenny
lol
suelin
does TBB not support running hidden services from it?
I've run HS a ton of times and never had trouble, but when I put the lines in the TBB torrc it fails to start with no log just errors
fails to start
kvm234
wb suelin
suelin
thanks
kvm234
https://tor.stackexchange.com/questions/6055/how-to-edit-the-torrc-to-run-a-hidden-service-in-tails
suelin
I'm not doing it from tails but maybe that will help
nope
:P
so annoying it has no log even ugh
kvm234
oops yeah I misread, you want to do this from TBB
Cinadie
Hello. Suelin do you know how to access Close Shell System?
suelin
I don't even know what that is
velope
and i bet it is not specifically about tor
suelin
should I be able to do HiddenServiceDir /what/ever/
even without the other line
for the IP : PORT
because it fails even with just that line
huh seems to be some permissions issue actually
when I put the path to the tor browser directory it works
but not to the home folder of the user I run it as
well, I guess it runs as tor user huh
actually it doesn't work it doesn't make .onion or key it just doesn't error
kvm234
today cacahuatl explained that TBB is just a browser that connects to the tor daemon
suelin
yeah like it should work but it doesn't :/
kvm234
and that connects to the guard node
when you have TBB, maybe the tor daemon is modified in some way to make sure the browser sending data through it does not leak information
dunno, guessing
suelin
what's weird is if I try to put the path to outside of the TBB directory it fails, if I put it in the TBB directory it works, but if I add a new directory under the TBB directory it fails again
maybe some apparmor bullsh*t or something?
does TBB use apparmor somehow?
kvm234
I think ryonaloli_ said Tails does but whonix does not...From that I would guess TBB does not have an apparmor thing
suelin
well I guess I will compile from source and just say you can't use TBB for a hidden service
it either errors with no log or does nothing
it actually seems arbitrary like HiddenServiceDir /home/user/ works, but HiddenServiceDir /home/user/hs fails, even with the same permissions on hs as on user
but it doesn't really work because it doesn't write the onion key or .onion to it
it just doesn't indicate failure
works fine when compiled from source
so it must be a bug with tbb somehow

is there any reason that torproject.org's download page seemed to be giving 404 for the .exe and .dmg files inconsistently?
Tichodroma
nickname4: which URLs?
suelin
they 404 prior to updating it sometimes
nickname4
Tichodroma: https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/5.0.2/torbrowser-install-5.0.2_en-US.exe is one of them
https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/5.0.2/TorBrowser-5.0.2-osx64_en-US.dmg is the other
strangely enough, the .exe did download, but then i tried again a few seconds later, and it was 404...
the browser is elinks if that matters, but it should never give false 404 errors
Tichodroma
the first URL redirects to https://dist.torproject.org/torbrowser/5.0.2/torbrowser-install-5.0.2_en-US.exe
not problem there
nickname4
does this mean it was probably just a glitch on my side?
Tichodroma
maybe
nickname4
okay
oh i meant links2 not elinks.
anyway thank you. i will re-try.
kvm234
what parts of the Tor project rely on "Trust"
I mean the Tor network
suelin
well you need to trust that your entry guard and exit node are not owned by the same attacker
I don't know exactly how to answer that
directory authority servers sort of need to be trusted but they distribute trust
I think tor distributes trust pretty much everywhere
