TORques
very possible
if you double click the tor.exe and have the torrc in the right place you just started a relay
Lever
when i close Tor browser it also clse thw whole Tor
can i close browser and keep Tor work for other apps
abcdef
well
Sorry, I mentioned this in the previous message. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04
(the one before that one at 22:13)
I haven't also started it in the first place
It just is present when I run netstat in the beggining
i mean at the system start
TORques
I run a relay in background with no links with TBB
I still use the TBB separate, because they have different Control ports
erdbeer
hello, world
kernelcorn
hello erdbeer
abcdef
TORques: I just wanna make sure, could you please tell me how to disable a relay?
erdbeer
is there a .onion address for oftc?
TORques
close gracefully or kill the process (tor.exe)

Lever
TORques: did you do that on Windows or Ubuntu 14.04
whitanne
lol windows
abcdef
well, that was strange
TORques
I run a relay in windows
;-)
abcdef
I have no more that tcp connection.
I started tor, then killed it.
ticktock
Lever: you could always run a system-global tor instance alongside your tbb tor instance
TORques
you still will see for some hours sporadic attempts to connect to your relay
abcdef_
I had to reboot to see if tor starts when I login
Indeed it does
whitanne
how do you "accidentally" create a relay?
abcdef_
Sry, I feel kind of stupid now
Well, I don't know tor just starts up when i login to ubuntu
(by itself)
TORques
change RUN_DAEMON="yes" to RUN_DAEMON="no" in your torrc
abcdef
Thank you
TORques
RunAsDaemon 0|1 - If 1, Tor forks and daemonizes to the background. This option has no effect on Windows; instead you should use the --service command-line option. (Default: 0)
abcdef
I was so paranoid
Lever
ticktock: i don't get what you mean - give me link to read about it ?
abcdef
under ubuntu it's actually /etc/default/tor
gotta go, thanks for help :)
ticktock
Lever: 'apt-get install tor', 'yum install tor', 'dnf install tor', (whatever), 'service tor start'
Lever
iam talking about windows not linux
TORques
Lever: I have a tor relay running in backgroud and I can use TBB separately - in windows
I connected here through the cackground relay
*background relay
127.0.0.1 9050 socks4
ticktock
it's probably possible to hack the tbb torrc or something to keep that tor instance running too

mischief
what's the status on tor pluggable transports in golang?
OFFShare
socks4a please.
ticktock
I don't use windows though, and it looks like the official answer was changed to, "just use tbb"
TORques
I think it's possible to run many tor instance at the same time but with different control ports
ticktock
https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-windows.html.en
TORques: it definitely is, but you have to feed it different torrc files, and turning it into a background service on windows is a pain too
TORques
it's very simple
I launch the background relay from a shortcut
ticktock
that's not a service
it dies when you log off
TORques
%windir%\System32\cmd.exe /c C:\tornou\Tor\tor.exe -f C:\tornou\Data\Tor\torrc
Lever
new versions of Tor for windows doens't have contol panel or torrc editor
TORques
and I clode the cmd window
I build a python script to communicate with the relay
I can't shut down it accidentally because is in task manager only
ticktock
you probably could have saved yourself some headaches and disk bloat by just using telnet and making a tcl/expect script with autoexpect
TORques
I can't set up tor as a service because the damn error 1053 and I had to trick the OS
telnet disabled
ticktock
the only difficult part is the AUTHENTICATE, and that's only because it refuses to work in any sane way when there isn't a password (cookie?) set iirc
Lever
i don't have this panel in new versions of Tor www.imgdumper.nl/uploads8/55fb2a31317c7/55fb2a311a8a5-tor.png
TORques
I use the stem module from python
pip install stem and some notorious scripts
Lever
TORques: you saying this to me
TORques
is not big deal to create a password for control port
I read somewhere that there are three levels of tor users
the beginners use TBB
whitanne
lol
TORques
next step is vidalia users
ticktock
Lever: yes, they did away with vidalia. if you'd clicked a the relay link under the last one you would have seen it: https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-relay.html.en
srg
I use TBB and I'm not a "beginner."
TORques
the expert users use tor.exe only
with some helpful scripts
trico
who uses tails?
srg
TORques: That also implies they use Windows, which I doubt "Experts" use :-P
ticktock
(Action) has never even used tbb
trico
or the android orbot
whitanne
there aren't "levels" of tor users
ticktock
windows 8/10...rootkit'ed by default, for Your Government's Convenience ^_^
TORques
for example, the official TBB is not set for maximum privacy
ticktock
Lever: that was the other thing I wanted to mention. using windows 8+ might negate any benefit you gain from passing your traffic over tor
whitanne
i use microsoft edge with the proxy settings pointed at vidalia to use tor on my windows 10 machine
i dont see the point in downloading another piece of software
trico
do you know what a dns leak is?
whitanne
no
trico
level up :)
kernelcorn
"i use microsoft edge with the proxy settings pointed at vidalia to use tor on my windows 10 machine" that's a pretty bad idea, it really is not as secure as you think it is. Also, Vidalia is unsupported, please don't use it.
srg
ticktock: That's why my only windows machiens are VMs without networking
I use Win10 Enterprise LTSB N. LTSB means it's stripped down for long-term support and only gets security updates (not feature updates). "N" means it doens't have DRM or media player or edge.
whitanne
VMs can still be broken out of :^)
TORques
if you want privacy with your TBB you must make some changes
ticktock
more importantly, windows 10 leaks other things like wifi passwords that get phoned home to microsoft. even going over tor, stuff like that can be dangerous to your privacy and anonymity
TORques
DNSPort 53 and AutomapHostsOnResolve 1 in your torrc
check all the Embeddings in browser
