toralf, srg: no relay flags depend on uninterrupted uptime. brief restarts should have little or no effect.
wtf_fcntl
I followed the instructions in start-tor-browser for confguring Tor Browser to use the system Tor installation and it all works, except the onion icon still has an X through it.
I did use SKIP_TOR_LAUNCH=1 and the control port-disabing variable. What am I misssing?
arma
the onion icon inside tor browser you mean?
wtf_fcntl
Yes.
arma
and your traffic is going via the system tor client?
wtf_fcntl
Yes.
arma
well, great. it is totally possible that torbutton is not prepared to handle what you're doing. i'm glad it mostly works.
wtf_fcntl
A friend of mine has done it before, and I have as well but I don't recall how.

(only view this link over tor browser, it's liable to blow up any other browser)

wtf_fcntl
Thanks cacahuatl.
Why would it blow up other browsers? Wouldn't they just fail to resolve .onion?
Ok thanks I have to go afk now.
cacahuatl
;) oh no, it's malicious
wtf_fcntl
Ha
I see no scripts on the page but w/e
KillYourVCR
marcusw it's amazing that some people can only "contribute" to tor by setting bans that amount to nothing in their precious offtopic channel
tell me when you see the light
fusebox how about telling the ops to be more productive in there
CooloutAC
KillYourVCR: they are worse then the gov't
KillYourVCR
hi CooloutAC
see, im not insane
im not the only one seeing this
i just have a more proactive way of approaching the issue
fusebox
you are a boring attention wh**e
KillYourVCR
attention whoring implies i have no goal other than to seek attention
that is not what i am doing
CooloutAC
KillYourVCR: https://orkoeloheim.bandcamp.com/album/kill-your-computer
rudz
what kind of music is that
btw ruds +Ri are redundant
CooloutAC
rudz: its a group consisting of a black guy and a white guy
rudz
ah
CooloutAC
bazerkowitz and orko eloheim
rudz
i'll add it to my listening list
ty
CooloutAC
"the dark side of human technology, computer genocide, the threshold of human technology, computer suicide, no mechanical override, the result of human homicide, binary slaves to the computer planet, we all die"
"dark waves"
rudz
oh really ruds
by the way people outside of a channel cana still /mode it
but yeah im in there
Octachones
hello, can you invite me to #nottor ? :)
rudz
LMAO
marcusw
cacahuatl im more bearable than you
you just stop short of getting your hind kicked from here
so
actually ruds
youre making #tor worse
since i cant bring offtopic conversation into there
you sure are a great op
Octachones
cacahuatl: That link with html code was so sexy...it not only crashed the browser, but also crashed the system...
wtf_fcntl
Octachones: You forgot to set ulimits :P

Octachones
wtf_fcntl: sorry ?
rudz
ruds refrain from pming me
/b 343
nobody is rekt but your channel
Octachones
wtf_fcntl: but i didn't forget to block all the scripts...
wtf_fcntl
Octachones: user resource limits.
rudz
ruds i cant wait to fill that ban list
wtf_fcntl
cacahuatl's DoS doesn't involve scripts.
It's a "logic bomb" which causes a structure in memory to expand so big it crashes the browser. Because you haven't set resources limits, the browser was allowed to subsequently crash the system.
Octachones
but...Didn't the kernel regulate it at own advantage ? I am just surprized that browser could use so much resourses as it could
wtf_fcntl
In short, "define A as a hundred Bs", "define B as a hundred Cs", "define C as a hundred Ds" ... "define Y as a hundred Zs. now what is A?"
Yes the kernel regulates it, if ulimits are set. See /etc/security/limits.conf.
Octachones
well...I thought that in Tails such limits are set by default
wtf_fcntl
The oom_killer in the kernel is not always the smartest. A very very quickly growing browser memory can easily overtake the oom_killer.
I'm surprised if they aren't.
I should write a patch then.
Octachones
it has crashed the browser both with Tails...so i was waiting for some time until all the system stopped to work...
wtf_fcntl
Oh ha I think I know why that would be.
Tails uses tmpfs which cannot be flushed, yet tmpfs memory counts to the system as cache, which it thinks *can* be flushed.
Octachones
wtf_fcntl: may I PM you ?
wtf_fcntl
So the system thinks it has plenty of memory left, as soon as it's about to run out of memory and die it'll say "Ok, now just flush that cache!" and the tmpfs replies "lolno"
Octachones: sure
CooloutAC
tails doesn't use grsec?
fusebox
not currently
wtf_fcntl
Nope
CooloutAC
well actually i think the first thing you do is take the mem limit off the browser anyway
lol
wtf_fcntl
AppArmor is not compatible indirectly.
Because grsec doesn't work with aufs, so it requires overlayfs, and overlayfs breaks AppArmor.
CooloutAC
ah I use apparmor too
i don't know what aufs is
wtf_fcntl
Tails uses AppArmor too
CooloutAC
oh cool
i'm using apparmor on whonix right now
wtf_fcntl
It's a stacking filesystem, one of 3 popular ones (aufs, overlayfs, and unionfs). Most live CDs like Tails use one of thoe.
*those
CooloutAC
but I also use it on my trisquel system with grsec
i see
bdanny
hi, can someone help me, how can i set tor browser to connect to all hosts thru the same circuit?
srg
bdanny: why would you want to do that?
suelin
it's possible with transparent proxying
bdanny
it's just temporary, two sites do an ip check and it fails
suelin
but is considered a disadvantage of transparent proxying
probably easier ways to do it
have you considered using Tor to connect to a web proxy so the exit IP is the same
srg
I think you can set the tor config to prefer entry nodes
suelin
well it is exit nodes that matter for his case
