tor changes people...
tnukze
I am trying to connect to the control port of tor using KiTTY (a PuTTY fork) but when I send `authenticate ""` the window closes. in the console running tor I get `Aug 31 23:51:47.000 [notice] New control connection opened from 127.0.0.1.` so I know it's going through
meejah
tnukze: you should enable password authentication and then pass the password you hashed inside the quotes. i believe. (or, do the cookie auth by hand...)
tnukze
so it won't work unless I use a password?
meejah
well, it will, but you have to pass the right stuff in the authenticate...
(by default, it's either nothing or cookie-auth, can't recall)

tnukze
I thought it was empty so I was using "". would authenticating incorrectly cause the close? or wouldn't i get something in the console output of tor if there was a problem authenticating?
cacahuatl
I don't know why it's causing the window to close, maybe if you tell it not to close on an error (see the manual for whatever software you're using) it might tell you what happened.
qwerty1
try
authenticate
on a line
nothing else
by default it's no password
cacahuatl
if there is no authentication then you don't need to send the 'authenticate' command at all
qwerty1
istr you do
putty closes the window when tor closes the connection after authentication fails
it has an option to not close it
tnukze
qwerty1: do you know offhand where that option is
Okay I think I got it. I disabled close window on termination and sent the authenticate {password} command and got "514 Authentication required."
meejah
tnukze: try sending "PROTOCOLINFO 1" to see what is enabled
tnukze
meejah: sending PROTOCOLINFO 1 also gives me the 514 error
I found out one needs to use the RAW connection option and not Telnet with putty

thanks for the responses

mancha
so google has declared a war on tor, as far as registrations.
is this becoming more common among email / social media / etc?

tnukze, meejah: For learning about controller authentication this should help...
https://stem.torproject.org/faq.html#can-i-interact-with-tors-controller-interface-directly
(has examples for all the things)

thank you atagar
mibbit1092
hello
does anyone know if tor can be used with mirc?
ryonaloli_
if mirc supports socks proxies, then yes
mibbit1092
what do i need, the tor export bundle?
expert*
UltimateNate
mibbit1092: mIRC does indeed have SOCKS proxy support.
I used mIRC before.
mibbit1092
thank you guys
is tor expert bundle the one i need?
i used tor a few years ago it was an ex installer that got me going
i dont see it in the tor expert buundle hwo do i install it
i run tor.exe and nothign happens
vidalia
i cant get this any more?
velope
correct. now "expert" for windows means more expert. you need to figure it out and configure via torrc.
mibbit1092
this sounds painfull
why is it become difficult
velope
because there is nobody to maintain vidalia, almost nobody to do things for windows, so what's provided is very basic, no bells & whistles.

mibbit1092
ah ok
thanks mate i will try to figure out
velope
you can use the tor in torbrowser with other apps, but you need to keep the browser open
mibbit1092
how?
velope
just configure the app to use the socksport, same as any other tor
mibbit1092
what is the app called
velope
your app
mibbit1092
no i mean the tor in torbrowser
how do i open it
yano
you don't
velope
you open torbrowser and let it run tor
mibbit1092
oh ok i think i know what you mean
yea let me read up on this
thanks guys

skeepnit
am i allowed to be in this channel even though i don't even use TOR (although I used it in the past for a short period of time)?
Raiz
skeepnit: sure you can
when you have issues running Tor you can come here and ask us
Tichodroma
The channel is for Tor users and operators. Not all Tor users and operators use Tor for IRC.
skeepnit
Tichodroma: my question was more ethical than technical
Tichodroma
I see no problem. You could think about using Tor and ask the community first if you have any questions.

Is it possible to just buy a Tor t-shirt?
ron_
I am getting "Job for tor.service failed. See "systemctl status tor.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details." while running "sudo service tor restart"
weasel
and what does it sya?
ron_
I am trying to set up a relay in Ubuntu 15.04
It says: tor.service - Anonymizing overlay network for TCP Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/tor.service; disabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: activating (start) since Mon 2015-08-31 22:27:21 IST; 26s ago Process: 12161 ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/tor --defaults-torrc /usr/share/tor/tor-service-defaults-torrc -f /etc/tor/torrc --RunAsDaemon 0 --verify-config (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 12158 ExecStartPre=/usr/
I'm also getting "[warn] Failed to unlink /var/lib/tor/bw_accounting: No such file or directory" in "/var/log/tor/log"
weasel
can you paste more context for both of these on paste.debian.net or equivalent?
ron_
also "Tor has successfully opened a circuit. Looks like client functionality is working." in "/var/log/tor/log"
Raiz
weasel: check this out: http://sprunge.us
weasel
Raiz: what do I care about that
ron_
@weasel unfortunately I do not have access to that computer..I'll share it as soon as I have
weasel
ron_: ok
ron_
Does "Tor has successfully opened a circuit. Looks like client functionality is working." means it is working?
weasel
it suggests it is.
but you're just not providing sufficient information to get a full frame of that state
ron_
@weasel I'm confused 'cos I did not get Self-testing indicates.."
messges..
was getting "Interupted...shutdown" messages..
weasel
ron_: this isn't twitter.
please avoid the "@<nick>" style.
