hello, Why is it a thing for irc to have a hate on for tor?
marcusw
people occasionally use it for trolling
eth0

marcusw
and then the admins get annoyed
eth0

does anyone know if it is possible to check if the bios was modified by someone ?
yestosa
Does a bios keep a log of it's previous settings? Good question, I don't know
opel453
yes thats what im trying to find out and if setting a bios password would actuallu help to prevent some kind of attack
yestosa
I am sure it would for most adversaries
but if you forget or lose the bios password it might mean having to get another motherboard
opel453
yeah i know, but seems like a good way to prevent some attack
i think running tails with no hd is a good idea as well
but
is there a way to encrypt tails kinda like liberte does it ?
yestosa
I am not sure, #tails might be a better place to ask that
velope
not necessary, and wouldn't help much
opel453
yeah well somone is spamming the whole place idk whta happened over there
velope
the system partition is read-only anyway
opel453
oh velope
so no need for encryption, thats cool
velope
if an attacker got physical access to your usb, they could modify it, along with a dummy request for the password
opel453
oh
so basicqa
basically the only way to hack bios would be if somone had an access to the usb port ?
yestosa
no I think velope was talking about the tails usb
opel453
oh
yestosa
did you want to use tails with an encrypted usb?
opel453
yes if that is possible because if somone found tails on it it could raise red flags but if it was encrypted then it would be no problem
yestosa
I think it is encrypted I am not sure though
opel453
it never asks for the password
yestosa
It may rely on some key being provided by the Tails OS which brings up the question to me would the usb work on a different installation of Tails OS
It looks like the OS itself is not encrypted on the usb, but the persistant data can be https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/persistence/index.en.html
opel453
thats what i thought

yestosa
maybe the default is not encrypted
opel453
yes it is not otherwise it would ask for a password
i know when i run liberte you need to setup password during the first time when you run it
yestosa
The webpage I posted makes it sound like it is
opel453
but only for the persistent volume
yestosa
Do you want the OS itself to be encrypted?
which is on a different volume
opel453
yes just tails only
ploopkazoo
can someone -i #nottor
wbns
yes, was trying to figure out what's up w/ that.
velope
ploopkazoo: don't you have an older nick that has been coming to #nottor for a long time
ploopkazoo
velope: I just changed it, was ruukasu
(changed like 4 days ago)
velope
i know. i was giving a hint.
ploopkazoo
...?
velope: can I just have this nick invited?
velope
the old nick doesn't need an invite
ploopkazoo
...but I like this nick better
what's the issue exactly?
velope
some changes happen slowly
wbns
velope: sorry there's probems or whatever that has caused #nottor to go +i, but as a contributor people often get referred there out of the irc channels. it's kind of a dead end for user engagement and acquisition if they can't get in there and don't know why
problems*
ploopkazoo
velope: can you just tell me what's going on instead of speaking in code
velope
it's not a particularly important resource that people have a right to
wbns
velope: new users and people with questions often get referred there
velope: it's also in the title of this chan as a place to go for non-tor talk
velope
true. that doesn't change my point.
ploopkazoo is identified and is somebody i recognize as having been around a long time
not so for wbns
wbns
ok
yestosa
what regulars are missing from #nottor?
opel453
hmm
any humor sites on tor ?
wbns
so tor and tails (also a place where people get referred to #nottor) is great for people who want to have a right to privacy, or at least take steps to trying to protect their rights
yestosa
opel453 you can access most of the internet as it is with Tor
or did you mean the deep dark web>
wbns
but now #nottor, where we have told new users to go is no longer open to these people because of that very reason?
opel453
yestose the deep dark web
yestosa
there are some search engines out there
use at your own risk https://ahmia.fi/search/
opel453
thanks
earlanie
joing #nottor
is for losers
yestosa
cant get in huh?
earlanie
:p
wbns
earlanie: no, actually, it's a place that people get sent to when they have a technical question that doesn't apply to tor or tails.
yestosa
ask for an invite
earlanie
It is okay yestosa, I'll explore where I am openly invited.
wbns
i understand if there's a reason, but perhaps change the topic of this channel and let other people know so we can keep things professional
and people aren't getting sent there and dead-ended
yestosa
wbns: there is a person abusing #nottor, #tails, etc
wbns
yeah, but isn't that kind of antithetic to our mission to lock everyone out?
yestosa
yeah I suppose so but abuse can also be antithetic
arma
the tor-mindset way to solve it would be to work on better anonymous authentication mechanisms
so you can keep the behaving people, but leave out the misbehaving people,
without needing to know the "identities" of anybody (whatever that means)
more discussion here: https://blog.torproject.org/blog/call-arms-helping-internet-services-accept-anonymous-users
yestosa
I like that idea
arma
but there is much work to be done, technically, to make usable systems that implement this mindset.
