Hi. Has anyone in the chat room ever been to a place where Tor is blocked EG China? If so, does anyone have a log from there? I just want to know how Tor reacts and when it stops boot strapping. Thanks.

sup guys
imee u on
if anyone trys to use centos to install tor
byroreed
yes but I have changed my nickname
apx
Is there a good way to detect USB devices inserted into a linux server?
tor-dev682
you must install gcc libevent + libevent-devel openssl+openssl-devel and a few others than grab source coude repo make and intall
install
cacahuatl
apx grsec kernel :P
tor-dev682
i been live for like ten hours
checked it with atlas
everything is looking great
this is fun and very hard bro
but i learned allot
apx
cacahuatl nice, though I am currently trying to migrate my exit nodes to freebsd; doesn't look viable for a BSD :(
tor-dev682
like yum clean metadata and yum clean all works great
why not
is it possible to build from source for tor?
ill look into it later
https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/tor-installation-in-freebsd.2969/
i had a friend who use to use bsd and he def had tor i think

apx
Uhm, well yes. Just make sure to use gmake, tor-dev682
tor-dev682
It's not that difficult ;) cd /usr/ports/security/tor && make install clean Make sure the tor service starts up by adding tor_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf. Last but not least, configure your browser to use tor as a proxy.
ive never even seen bsd yet
i heard it more unixy
cacahuatl
there's probably some logging you can enable in udev too, but better suited to #nottor
tor-dev682
id like to learn how to use all of them
centos is a pain in the ass
for tor
apx
indeed, I'll talk to the freebsd guys for now and try to find an integrated solution. Thanks cacahuatl
tor-dev682 my apx3 relay is already deployed on freebsd
tor-dev682
cool
how is the security of freebsd
and are you chroot jailing tor?
apx
#nottor
tor-dev682
ok
casual
hi, does this channel accept tor browser questions, or is there a better place?
cacahuatl
It depends, ask anyway and we'll see.
casual
fine then
I am looking suggestions for a tor browser site blacklist plugin. features I want:
- it should let me blacklist a site with a custom note
cacahuatl
Definitely not on topic :P
It's a "firefox addon" question
casual
hm
doesn't tor browser have security requirements on firefox addons?
or it doesn't mind any firefox addons to be used?
cacahuatl
"Don't add them" is the main consideration.
casual
i'll ask other way then
cacahuatl
blocklists are fingerprintable, it's counter-productive to anonymity.
casual
how do I maintain a custom private blacklist of sites then while using tor browser?
I just want that once I go to a sh*t site - never end there again
cacahuatl
You could use one of the many available addons at the cost of your unlinkability.
casual
if I ever click on a link that points me there - tor browser should display a custom reminder note about why I blacklisted it
I thought that I should go for an addon, not use some filtering proxy software, because then I would have to interfer into tor browser's machinery and stick it somewhere between the browser and the tor instance
cacahuatl
There are addons that provide this but it will (potentially catastrophically) harm your anonymity.

casual
it is not obvious to me why
cacahuatl
They're fingerprintable and if you curate your own that fingerprint will be unique to you, all your sessions will carry this fingerprint and be linkable.
casual
this is how i see it: i tell tor browser to go to a site by either explicitly typing that address in the address bar or clicking on a link
if the site is blacklisted - it just doesn't send any request
how is that a problem for anonymity?
cacahuatl
see above
casual
I don't want my private blacklist to get leaked anywhere, it should stay local
obviously i did not understand this part:
they are fingerprintable... and be linkable
cacahuatl
But, as mentioned, this isn't tor related and it's harmful, it will undo protections provided by Tor Browser.
casual
cacahuatl: I really fail to see how, as long as I don't publish my private block list online
if i want to go to a blocked site and the browser does not - it's just like i didn't go there at all
I'm obviously missing some point
I don't understand how can an action that doesn't happen at all be fingerprintable
cacahuatl
I will provide a brief explaination and example in #nottor but as stated, this is not a tor related issue.
casual
cacahuatl: thank you, let's switch then
ncl
Is there a list of what each authority does? (eg longclaw is a bw scanner, tonga is the bridge auth, etc)
Sebastian
ncl: check https://consensus-health.torproject.org
it lists flags
no real list tho
murb
win 1
grr
Sebastian
ncl: you're right, those three are responsible to hand out the badexit flag
Directory Authorities generally aren't exit nodes (they handle basically no real traffic at all)
pie_
Hey guys, how much memory does tor require to funcitong reasonably?
Peng
What type of functioning? A client browsing Wikipedia? A relay maxing out GigE?
pie_
Lets say 5 wiki pages at a time?
I suppose bandwidth usage would be a better number
1 megabyte/s?
Mathilde
pie_: Not much 128mb should do fine at those speeds
pie_
Ok lets rephrase, how much can be shoved into 32mb? :P
arma
32mb is very little indeed. it's not even clear libraries like openssl can fit in that.
pie_
I.e. in RAM?
arma
yes
pie_
Hm. Well I'm pretty sure it's been done but I can understand it being hard.
Mathilde
In client mode my ram usage in arm is around that at low speeds. 20-40 mb
arma
everything's smaller in 32-bit
pie_
im eyeing a wr710n
dudebro1
hey dudes
what was I told about changing my nodes list?
arma
i don't know. what were you told?
m3g1l1n0n
Perkol
How do I enable cookies in tor browser?
ryonaloli_
they are already enabled
Perkol
Hm... i get error "The page isn't redirecting properly"
