have a Q re hidden services. all "works", if working is what you'd call it, but tor browser doesn't seem to do file caching. central to the app is about 2MB of javascript. so every time I open a new tab it takes around 5 minutes to load everything it needs - any suggestions
cacahuatl
Stop abusing javascript
but probably look deeper into the caching issue, check the caching directives are being properly applied to the served content
meejah
mSparks: also, it's considered bad form to cross-post on different channels (i replied in #tor-dev)
mSparks
everything works fine on the normal web, project has been in production for about 3 years now
I guess it's down to caching being disabled by default with all the browser.cache settings in about:config
which I understand
but how to get any kind of performance without caching stuff?
once the app loads page response times are back to the friendly 10-15ms I'm used to. which is great
meejah
mSparks: did you check that? (i.e. you're saying TBB is disabling all caching?)
mSparks
seems to be all off in a default install
don't seem to be getting anything out of cache
(html), force loads eveytimg
meejah
hmm, darn. sorry, not a tor-browser dev and don't have one handy here :/
cacahuatl
It's certainly capable of doing so. Viewing most sites .css and .js that are shared across pages end up with a 304 response.

dudebro1
Howdy there got a pretty important question
ve1ope
ok
i got a pretty important answer
dudebro1
I only get one unchanging exit node and it says its in germany, turns out its in new york
ve1ope
haha
weird
dudebro1
https://db-ip.com/134.255.239.61
funny eh?
wonder why it never changes
ve1ope
yeah
do you have a set exit node list
in torrc
korax
try www.ip-adress.com instead maybe
ve1ope
adress
nice typo
dudebro1
pardon? sorry I'm a bit slow on the uptake
still learning
ve1ope
korax made a typo. point and laugh
lol
dudebro1
I meant as my next course of action not the typo :P
odd
another ip search said it was indeed in germany
so why in hell do I always get that exit node
cacahuatl
Have you edited your torrc?
ve1ope
thats what i asked though

You ever get microwaved when you sleep and wake up gasping for air after getting a microwaved to skull dream about the government literally killing you?
mSparks
so in good ol irc fashion, quick q on #tor vs #tor-dev
is #tor-dev "just" for those of you guys working on core tor stuff, or anything related to developing stuff that makes use of this lovely bit of tech
ve1ope
probably the former, talking about future development of tor
the topic doesnt say?
it says developing Tor not developing with Tor :p
not to be an ass but thats what it says
hope that answers your question
mSparks
yeah, so where does developing stuff for hidden services go?
and questions related to them
like how well I can expect hidden services to perform if the hidden service changes it's IP/country every few minutes
s7r
mSparks: that's something wrong. why would you want that? Tor tries to hide your IP, so it should be safe. also, chaning the ip/country means disconnecting from Tor, means losing connection to your introduction points and means publishing a new descriptor for your hidden service
could cause downtime, if the clients have a cached descriptor of your hidden service
ve1ope
every few minutes? sh*t
sounds like a bad isp
s7r
indeed.
your HS will not be available most of the time
changing your real ip address while using Tor is a false sense of security. Tor does that by itself, you just need to use it properly

mSparks
the hidden service I'm playing with is already live in about 15 countries. just atm it just hides itself as standard http
tor offers the opportunity for me to actually give out the access points
just I'd rather those access points weren't from a single entry point - rotate them around the pool
alternative I guess is to offer the hidden service to a load balancing point
->so tor fully assumes the hidden service is associated with a single IP address?
that rarely changes
emio
ve1ope: are you the real velope?
BWMerlin
where can I download older versions of tor? I am having trouble with 5.x versions crashing on me
ve1ope
of course
no i dont want to be
lol
he's an ass
nvm
emio
BWMerlin: I don't know where you can get older versions. Maybe at a web archive? BTW using an old version is a really bad idea.
BWMerlin
I understand that
emio
how are you using Tor? In Tails?
BWMerlin
but it looks like my crashes have been fixed after https everhwere and no script updated
tor bundle
emio
in what distro?
BWMerlin
Windows 8
sigh, just crashed again
have done a clean install of 5 and 5.5a1
emio
ok. offtopic, but maybe install virtualbox in Windows 8. Then download a Linux Distro, perhaps tails. Install that in Virtualbox that way you can run Tails within Windows 8. I hear the security is not great but it might not be worse than using TBB directly in windows 8
when you downloaded TBB, did you verify the download by looking at the checksum or some other method?
BWMerlin
no I did not, I can if I must but I did download it from torproject.org
mSparks
lol
found a really silly bug in firefox on windows 10
emio
BWMerlin: have you ever done a checksum before in Windows?
mSparks
when you have 6 tabs open the minimise and new tab buttons overlap
BWMerlin
yes, I have a shell extension tool that can do them
compare hash values
emio
BWMerlin: ok great
BWMerlin: I would do a checksum on that download and compare it to what they show at torproject
just so you can eliminate that
as being the cause of the problem
BWMerlin
does tor only offer pgp sign, no sha etc?
emio
I believe they offer an sha on a certain page
I can only find a signature on the webpage so far
BWMerlin
emio
yeah I don't see them either
