Why does the new, but still alpha, Tor Messenger use central public servers instead of Tor client hidden services?
dbclk
hey guys
i have a question
I've download tor to my centos machine -> sudo install tor
and i've downloaded the tor bundle -> browser
when I start the tor browser...it doesn't feel to me that I'm using my local tor because, I've stop the tor service but, my browsers says, I'm using tor
any ideas?
ryonaloli_
tor browser comes with its own tor bundled
you don't need to use a system tor
dbclk
I would want to use it
can I ?
i think the only thing I need to change is the socket port
is that true?
ryonaloli_
you'll also have to set the variable TOR_SKIP_LAUNCH=1 so that tor browser sees that on start
that will prevent it from starting its own instance of tor
dbclk
well...I've also configure the browser preference on the tor browser to use socket port 9050
which I think is my local system tor as well
ok..doing that now
when I change the browser's socket port to 9050 and launch tor browser it says -> Tor is not working in this browser.
@ ryonaloli_
ryonaloli_
did you set the variable TOR_SKIP_LAUNCH=1?
dbclk
yep..I'm on centos so I run -> export TOR_SKIP_LAUNCH=1
yes I di
did*
but, going to this site https://check.torproject.org/ says tor is enabled
so Idk
ryonaloli_
then it's fine
it says tor is not working in the browser because it does not have access to tor's control port
meaning it cannot control tor to do things like change circuits if you click new identity, etc. but it will still route everything through tor like normal

dbclk
cool
doesn't seem I can access any onion sites from my tor browser
ryonaloli_
but other sites can be accessed through tor?
dijack
well normal .com
yes but, not .onion
@ ryonaloli_
ryonaloli_
huh, and you're sure it goes through tor? that's strange, idk what could cause that. are you sure the onion site isn't just down?
dijack
I'm not sure..just based on what I'm seeing when I check https://check.torproject.org/
the only thing I've done to the tor browser to use my local tor is this -> http://digitz.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Screenshot-from-2014-10-11-233955.png
@ ryonaloli_
ryonaloli_
i really don't know, sorry
i did the same thing on my tor browser and i am still able to connect to onion sites
try connecting to facebookcorewwwi.onion because i assume it'll be up
dijack
ok
its says "server not found"
:( @ ryguyy
ryonaloli_
oh...
yeah, you'll probably have to wait until someone who knows more than me about this can answer
dijack
ok
cooltor
where I can find a company that gives some safe bridge?
ryonaloli_
companies don't give out bridges
try https://bridges.torproject.org/
cooltor
is there a way to find some private bridge?
I know this link
ryonaloli_
what do you need a bridge for? typically you don't need a 100% private bridge to bypass most firewalls, including the great firewall of china
cooltor
In my country using tor is dangerous
bridge can help me a bit
to hide my tor usage
ryonaloli_
the tor project information page on bridges gives help on how to get a bridge which is not publically distributed
biciclo
hi all, i'm finding problems starting tor: http://paste.debian.net/plainh/6bb335e0
cooltor
the only way is to have a friend in a other country?
biciclo
maybe it's something related to the kernel, which is a chrome os kernel
cooltor
another question, what is the difference of obfs3 and obfs4?
ryonaloli_
if you want one that is 100% private, then yes. however you can also just buy a vps and use that as a bridge

cooltor
obfs4 is more safe?
okok
ryonaloli_
obfs3 is older and easier to block. obfs4 is just harder to block.
cooltor
I can't setup obfs4 in tails
I would use it but I can't
cacahuatl
biciclo what operating system are you using to run tor and where did you get the package from?
ryonaloli_
cooltor: so you may have to just buy a vps and put a bridge on it yourself
you can get vpses cheap
biciclo
cacahuatl: it's on debian testing, from the debian testing repos
cooltor
yes this is a good deal
ryonaloli_
you would have to use a vps with a bridge on it instead of a vpn because tails does not support vpns
biciclo
just the kernel is a chrome os kernel, not the one shipped by debian
cacahuatl
That's your problem then
ryonaloli_
biciclo: why are you using the chrome os kernel...?
biciclo
which?
oh, for a better compatibility with hardware... it's a chromebook
cacahuatl
The kernel is applying some restriction on install, I'm not sure why install is being called but whatever
biciclo
i think install is called on the debian side
so the issue here is kernel restrictions?
cacahuatl
Yes
dijack
is tor browser bundle safe to use?
cacahuatl
Yes
dijack
can I theoretically be tracked?
cacahuatl
Too vague to give a meaningful answer.
dijack
I'm saying....can my tor usage be tracked back to me?
biciclo
ok guys thanks, i'll try figuring out what is happening
ryonaloli_
dijack: if someone hacks your computer, e.g. with a browser exploit, then ye
*yes
dijack
ok
ryonaloli_
otherwise it will be extremely difficult. leaked documents from the NSA and GCHQ show they are having a very hard time deanonymizing tor users en masse
what is your adversary?
*who is
biciclo
anyways this information string is printed when an ELOOP error triggered, according to chromium os source code. maybe it's just about weird symlinkings on my system...
cacahuatl
That's what it says, yes.
forenty
is it possible to connect from computer 1 via ssh to computer 2 and "borrow" computer 2's tor connection?
ryonaloli_
yes, if you use ssh like a vpn to forward all network traffic
forenty
also, is an arm version of torbrowser in development?
