Kre10s
hi. I'm trying to get Tor to work, but always get "Your Tor Browser profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible." I've looked on googly, but am getting allot of contradictory results.
whitanne_
Kre10s: what OS are you using?
Kre10s
Debian 8
I've installed tor and torbrowser-launcher using apt and standard repos.
whyrlpool
is globe.torproject.com no longer collecting data for anyone else?
I cant seem to see any data since 2015/06/25 22:52:30
AdelaideCressida
Kre10s you wot, try the tor browser bundle alone at first to make sure that there is nothing weird going on in your system first
and if you want to have tor run externally install tor from the official tor repository, disable the tor launcher from tbb, and either change the proxy port in the tor browser or edit your torrc
Kre10s keep in mind that it's usually a better idea to run the tor browser than your own firefox of course
sup cacahuatl
Kre10s
AdelaideCressida, yes. I already have to daemon running. Now I am trying to get the tor browser to start.
Usually it checks it does an update on itself and then starts. Instead I'm getting the profile error message.
AdelaideCressida
Kre10s alright go in the addons folder of tbb and remove the tor launcher, this might be preventing things from working as it tries to launch its own tor instance
cacahuatl
do not do this

AdelaideCressida
or you can service tor stop and see whether tbb starts properly
Kre10s
If i stop the tor daemon and run the browser on its own I get the same error.
AdelaideCressida
cacahuatl what's wrong with disabling tor launcher if one wants to run tor externally
Kre10s welp have you tried a new tbb? the one you are using might have corrupted some config stuff or something
cacahuatl
https://0xcaca0.co.uk/torbrowser.html probably a better method or set of methods
there are envvars that are checked that will stop it launching tor, TOR_SKIP_LAUNCH
AdelaideCressida
oh cool
cacahuatl
but you'll want to hook it up to the control port for 'New Identity'
Kre10s
ah. rm -R ~/.local/share/torbrowser did the trick. I hope the profile will be reset this way.
hmm. Now it no longer compains about the profile. It downloads the latest browser and does an update then crashes...
cacahuatl
Have a look at the issues on github or raise one, I assume you're using Micah's Tor Browser Launcher?
AdelaideCressida
Kre10s there's always the more hardcore troubleshooting method which is reinstall everything, perhaps in some vm for more simplicity
at worst you might isolate the problem as being something atypical in which case you could do what cacahuatl said
Kre10s
the fu*k kind of trouble shooting is that? more like trouble bombing...
AdelaideCressida
yeah whatever lol
has always worked for me though
Kre10s
why do all the normal sites ask for captcha when I use tor?
AdelaideCressida_
define normal lol
Kre10s
like google etc.
non onion
cacahuatl
People abuse Tor, sites have to resort to captcha. Some more reasonably than others.
AdelaideCressida_
because they do not care about legit tor users enough to ask services like cloudflare to change how they respond to abuse

There was a honeypot experiment called BADONIONS https://chloe.re/2015/06/20/a-month-with-badonions/
The results show 2 guard nodes logging into the honeypot
how?
Can nodes earn exit and guard flags?
cacahuatl
Guest3149
How is the methodology different from SoaT's?
ncl
I don't know what SoaT is, but a relay can only be a part of any circuit once; no two addresses in a /16 are used twice
(in a single circuit)

Guest3149
spolied onions framework for testing bad exits
ncl
oh
cacahuatl
exitmap, you mean?
Guest3149
yes
did it change names?
cacahuatl
exitmap normally tests each connection, make a connection, check that the returned value(s) is as expected
they inserted a 'cookie' into each request, then later checked for that cookies use, each exit could only know the provided cookie.
it's a longer play for detecting a different type of attacker
Guest3149
exitmap is for advanced sybil I'm guessing
BADONIONS was just a simple test for misbehaving exits
cacahuatl
No, exitmap tries to detect Mallory, badonions tries to detect Eve.
"Eve, an eavesdropper, is usually a passive attacker. While she can listen in on messages between Alice and Bob, she cannot modify them." "Mallory, a malicious attacker; unlike the passive Eve, this one is the active man-in-the-middle attacker who can modify messages, substitute his/her own messages, replay old messages, and so on."
There's no reason you can't use exitmap to deploy the cookies, I contacted the author of the post about it, trying to move things forward (they had some gripes on their blog).

So, i made a call to the afternic premium domain asking for http://torbrowser.org/ domain sales information
buy they said that http://torbrowser.net is being sold for $1.200 but there's no sales/bid active from the owner for http://torbrowser.org/
and http://torbrowser.org/ owners does not answer to emails being sent them on their "contactprivacy" email
cow_2001
where are the bright green weirdo shirts? https://www.torservers.net/wiki/ttshirt/index
srg
cow_2001: I think those are reserved for those who run relays
I got one a few months ago
cow_2001
i am running a relay
srg
you qualified for the free shirt?
cow_2001
yes
srg
ah
I dunno, i could select the option when I got the email saying I qualified

why my node spends it time to go down on the consensus ? :'(
i have plenty of bandwith and cpu, but nobody use it :'(
rakor
Hey guys. In the onion-icon in the tor-browser I have two Options New Identity and New Channel (Dont know it exaclty, cause I use a german edition). What is the difference?
caravel
rakor: try them :)
rakor: new identity will get you change exit node and even restart a fresh instance of your browser
rakor: new circuit for that site (not sure about your translation), will only change the exit node for that site
rakor
OK Thanks& so the difference is the refresh of the browser? I tested them but could not find a difference exept the warning about the restart of the browser.
caravel
rakor: the second one is a rather new feature, pretty useful eg. when you need to try several exit nodes until you can reach a site (you keep the same browser instance, other sites are not affected)
rakor
ok. Can I somehow select an exact country as exit-node? this would be helpful for some situations
So in normal situations the second option is a good joice :)
caravel
rakor: from my usage, I think (but didn't verify the docs yet) that when only changing circuit, we keep cookies too
rakor: yes, selecting a given country for exit nodes could be useful, I think so, but I don't think we can do that from the GUI
rakor
ok, and new identity also clears cookies& good to know :)
caravel
new identity is supposed to clear everything, cache and history, cookies etc. I think it won't clear all your prefs eg. noscript, thou
rakor
OK, thanks a lot& And one other question. I tested it some times with new identity and also restarted the torbrowser.. but the enty-node was always the same.. Is this normal?
caravel
yes, let me dig you the FAQ for this
rakor: https://www.torproject.org/docs/faq.html#EntryGuards
rakor
oh thanks
caravel
so, it willl change, but in time
rakor: ^^
drixter
is this normal that running bridge, 16d uptime, ipv4+ipv6, obfs2, obfs3, obfs4 and totally no clients?
zpaz
hi guys
I hope not to interrupt
i'm more than willing to share some bandwidth with the tor network
but i always fail misserably when i try
right now, i put this in my /etc/tor/torrc
