GeKo
huh, that should not happen
Ubik
That's what I was thinking.
Not sure why it's thinking the alpha is the latest.
GeKo
does it happen if you restart again?
Ubik
yeah
GeKo
okay, let me try a thing
Ubik
k... I'm guessing it's checking somewhere online to figure out if there's a newer version...and perhaps wherever that somewhere is, is pointing to the wrong one?
arma
"Downloading tarball"? surely our installer doesn't say this?
(is this torbrowserlauncher or some other variant?)
Ubik
torbrowser-launcher
GeKo
oh ho

arma
ah ha
GeKo
lol
it seems we broke them again, fu*k
Ubik
lol
on Debian 8
srg
Why is TBL needed?
TBB can update itself now...Just grab the tarball from the site once and you're good to go, afaik
I run TBB on debian stretch/testing/9 just fine and it autoupdates itself
Ubik
OK. Can try that. What's the simplest way to get an icon for TBB somewhere in the desktop?
Downloading TBB and launching it off the command line seems to work, I'm in there now.
srg
Ubik: Hm, I have an icon. I don't remember how I got it though, heh
oh, there's a command line switch
Ubik
srg: lol.. yeah, TBL put one there (well, in the menu, and I just stuck it in my dock)
srg
--register-app Register Tor Browser as a desktop app for this user
cviw
it's really hard connecting to oftc over tor
Ubik
ah
srg
so ./start-tor-browser --register-app
cviw: I thought tor was banned on oftc or something?
or severely limited somehow
(Action) shrugs
Ubik: `./start-tor-browser --help` to see it
Ubik
srg: thanks, just found it.. uninstalling TBL right now, let's see how this goes!
cviw
srg: maybe only few exit nodes allow irc ports
srg
cviw: no, I think oftc limits it
you can ask in #oftc
cviw
Cannot join #oftc (You are banned).
cacahuatl
You need to be registered with nickserv, probably, and have the host cloak applied
Ubik
srg: Thanks... that worked great. Got it registered, shows up in the menu, stuck me an icon in the usual spot, and it runs!
srg
Ubik: Sweet :-) Ever since TBB implemented their own update mechanism, the tor-browser-launcher is kinda unneeded
Ubik
Yeah
boklm
https://github.com/micahflee/torbrowser-launcher/blob/master/torbrowser_launcher/launcher.py#L511
tor-browser-launcher assume any version that doesn't end with 'a\d-Linux' or 'b\d-Linux' is a stable version

GeKo
fun
Ubik
oops
cacahuatl
That seems to be a common(ish) question, how to tell what is the latest version.
Is there an "approved" method?
arma
does anybody know where i can find an mp4 or other self-contained video of our 31c3 talk?
(Action) finds https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tor-talk-31c3
cacahuatl
media.ccc.de also
arma
thanks
asent_
hi, new to IRC and TOR, anyone want to give me some pointers?
srg
asent_: pointers for what?
this channel, #tor, is a technical support channel for tor
I use weechat as my IRC client. I run it on my server so it's connected 24/7
Freenode and OFTC are networks that have mostly technical support channels for open source software
kernelcorn
kvm
kernelcorn: what happened with that project you were working on over the summer?
kernelcorn
it's still active
I've been working on the design and improving its strength and resistance to compromise
overall the project is looking very good and coming along nicely.
kvm
great thanks
kernelcorn: is there a timeline for implementing the project?
kernelcorn
it's hard to give a timeline, but as soon as possible
kvm
ok
kernelcorn
I've got some more work to do on the implementation and the research paper
kvm
are you publishing the paper?
kernelcorn
yes. I haven't been successful so far, but with the new design I'm hoping that it'll be accepted
current design paper, which is unfinished: https://github.com/Jesse-V/OnioNS-literature/raw/master/conference/conference.pdf
kvm
"successful" as defined by your research advisor?
kernelcorn
the paper was not accepted by ACM CCS 2015 or NDSS'15 due to some design problems. I've spent the last few weeks redesigning and simplifying, and the result seems to be more intuitive and has stronger security.
kvm
I will have to look up those things. glad you are still working on it
kernelcorn
the OnioNS client software integrates pretty well into the Tor Browser but I haven't tested it on the latest hardened release.
beDraggled
bye
skore
greetings, anyone using countermail. and knows what's going on?
srg
Maybe they're caught up in the ProtonMail DDoS
(Action) shrugs
skore
srg: but countermail is hosted in sweden. though it could be possibel that the same guys are now taking on countermail.
but protonmail at least has a twitter account and keeps it's customers up to date. not so with countermail :/
probably should consider a switch
srg
I really like PM so far
CounterMail isn't fully open source I thought I read?
skore
yep
and they only have a clunky java web applet :(.
cacahuatl
...what?
srg
ew, java applets
cacahuatl
You're running a java applet to access webmail?
srg
cacahuatl: that's what hushmail used
iirc
cacahuatl
Yeah and they were really trustworthy...
srg
lol
skore
cacahuatl: was also supprised when i saw that for a privacy mail provider
gamambel
oh nice multilanguage hardened tor browser
cacahuatl
are there details on what 'hardened' entails? PIC, PIE, etc?
gamambel
GeKo: you probably know this, but it would be really nice to have explanatory hints/hover texts for the tor browser privacy settings. or underlined "[?]" behind the options that link to a section in the documentation
for example, i'm not even sure what "Change details that distinguish you from other Tor browser users" actually means
cacahuatl: https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tor-browser-55a4-hardened-released
some more details are on the tor-qa list iirc
cacahuatl
thanks
kvm
Yes that would be great "but it would be really nice to have explanatory hints/hover texts for the tor browser privacy settings. or underlined "[?]" behind the options that link to a section in the documentation"
