ERROR torsocks[23996]: [socks5] Resolve destination buffer too small (in socks5_recv_resolve_reply() at socks5.c:681)
torsocks 2 is supposed to have ipv6 support but it doesn't seem to
#8743
i get that error for anything ipv6
does it really have ipv6 support?
anyone got it to work?
should i try 2.1.0?
it says 2.x
dgoulet
qwerty1: it should yes but keep in mind that ipv6 support is possible if your tor SocksPort is listening on IPv6, and the reason is that we need to send back to the application a connected ipv6 socket, v6 to v4 is not supported
qwerty1: if it still doesn't work, please report it
qwerty1
hmm
other apps are able to connect to ipv6 addresses using a socksport that has an ipv4 address
arma
(Action) is curious to hear this one too

A new forbes article appears to indicate Microsoft themselves admits Win-10 automatic spy mode cannot be stopped (short of not using Win-10 entirely)
going over the new purposed UK laws on computer users, business's it appears they are deciding against their plan to ban encryption use
I don't see how most business's could operate, especially banking mortgage and credit related without using encryption
kvm2345
A_Smith: I agree, the plan did not seem workable at all. I am sure academics were u p in arms about the proposal

sad
what you really want is for them to be fully scared of encryption, publicly try to do all they can and publicly fail
only then do they go away and stop bothering people
otherwise they hang around and make threats that aren't credible to most people but are to some, and coerce people that way

A_Smith
well the western media monoply is none stop placing 'encryption' with terrorists and the fbi director fanning the flames of fear about going 'dark'
qwerty1
i do think encryption and stuff like tor is an existential threat to their business model
A_Smith
yet all they are doing is really a mass ploy for ever more funding for their own nefrious actions IMO
yes qwerty1 , control over what you see, view, read, want
eemcs
is Tor Weekly News bulletin (made by Harmony) cancelled? I've not receive email since last July
A_Smith
mega millions of taxpayer funds are spent simply preparing the military officials to make their case for 'more funding', all their prep, details, psyop media ads, all of that just to polish up their routine for limitless funding
kvm2345
fraud, waste and abuse
A_Smith
its clearly having impacts on engineers, developers and IT teams who are hesitant to add newer forms of encryption and protocals.
eemcs
looks like its on my side, sorry for that
A_Smith
yes kvm2345 however if you are in a burning house are you going to support giving more money overseas for unknown, uncertain agendas and actions is going to make you safe?
qwerty1
hmm? if anything people aren't hesitant to add encryption anymore
A_Smith
well yeah like the run on ammo and firearms, the very actions to limit, curb and outright ban them has had the opposite effect, however many new forms of encryption are not being found in public applications qwerty1
kvm2345
A_Smith: of course not
qwerty1
new != more secure
A_Smith
I'd use 3fish 512/1024 and lattice ciphers if they were availiable in public applications but they aren't, openssl hasn't offered any new encryption suites in perhaps a decade now
3fish isn't new but highly secure, very fast and found in virtual no new public applications qwerty1
qwerty1
threefish is not that great
not better than aes
A_Smith
how so, its better than 2fish which also isn't even found in openssl
kvm2345
A_Smith: the bigger problem for now might be just getting people to use encryption at all, to get into the habit of it
A_Smith
aes has all kinds of vectored attacks qwerty1
kvm2345
even if they use weak encryption, it is probably better than none at all
A_Smith
with quantum computers, you have the very backbone of aes and its block ciphers under great attacks
I think weak encryption is like a honeypot, pushed out to the masses in hopes they use it because its very much broken
NaCl looks like it might be a fast solution to moving away from openssl suites possibly

ncl
I don't think AES is affected by qc?
Peng
ncl: QC effectively halves the key size
ncl
ah
Peng
ncl: because https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grover's_algorithm
A_Smith
the new lattice ciphers which were actually not that new appear to be sought now as a direct blow to any quantum computer based attack on them
the new PGP sub-keys ability appears poised to breath new life in that asymetric encryption, users keep their master key pair away for safety and can spawn as many subkeys as they wish
arma
eemcs: no, there was a gap but it's back now. if you haven't received it, maybe you aren't on the list or something? (or aren't watching your blog rss)
cviw
Hi. My relay restarts on its own, idk how to debug this.
I typed dmesg but it was empty, idk even if its Tor's fault
Peng
How about Tor's logs?
weasel
what do you mean with "restarts on its own"
cviw
Peng: there's nothing unusual about it
weasel: when I connect to the server I find Tor down
after a day or so
It makes the relay completely useless...
bbl
Peng
cviw just demonstrated with their Tor process is doing
weasel
that's not a very helpful antyhing
no he didn't
arma
also down != restarts on its own
Peng
Does the channel still have to be +R? There've been one or two people in #oftc today asking "why can't i get in #tor"
wk2015
hello world
I want to try tor messenger... It is infected by ATRAPS
McAfee and avira antivrus confirm infected files
kvm2345
heh really?
Is this Windows?
wk2015
yes with virustotal.com
yes
Peng
Sure you gots the right files?
wk2015
yes
kvm2345
can you try it first on a linux machine?
Peng
Do you have the VirusTotal link handy?
kvm2345
also for windows, did you verify the checksum or signature?
wk2015
yes same checksum
kvm2345
can you link here where you downloaded it from?
wk2015

wk2015: Ignore 'em and install it
the source is there

I can't ignore ├╣alware alerts. Sorry
This is a standard newbie behavior
