Hello
meh

mjt
Hello. Is there a way to use tor network just for certain sites using regular browser?
I tried to find tor plugin for firefox, but apparently it doesn't exist?
Peng
It would be better to use Tor Browser.
ryonaloli_
there is a way, but it is highly recommended against
there are a *huge* number of ways you can be deanonymized in taht situation
mjt
I don't care about anonymity in this context
ryonaloli_
at all? well then, just install any plugin that lets you use a socks proxy
Tichodroma
then why do you want to use Tor?
mjt
Peng: I'd love to but it doesn't work, many features (eg cookies) required by some sites

ryonaloli_
and point it to 127.0.0.1 port 9050
cookies work fine with tor browser
in fact, by default, it works with almost everything regular firefox works with
mjt
Tichodroma: because of idiotic censorship my govt decided to put on me
Tichodroma
so you *do* care about anonymity. Use the Tor Browser.
mjt
(right now *.wordpress.com is not available for me for example)
no I don't
Tichodroma
"not available" means what exactly?
ryonaloli_
tor browser will be easiest to use. but if you really want to avoid it, just do what i said and use a plugin that lets you use a socks proxy
because tor acts as a socks proxy to local applications
mjt
it is redirected to a govt-controlled site (hijacked) which says it is blocked
socks proxy.
I run one of exit nodes here
Tichodroma
do I understand you correctly: You use the Tor Browser and whe you access a WP site, it redirects?
mjt
Tichodroma: nope, only when I use non-tor browser
Tichodroma
well, use the Tor Browser to access this WP site. It should work fine.
mjt
heh. Guys, lemme read everything you already replied :) It is a bit too fast for me :)
I run tor exit node here, will it work as a socks proxy too?
suitable for my use case anyway
Tichodroma
where is "here"? Your desktop?
mjt
ryonaloli_: re doesn't work: I come across several sites non-working in tor due to missing something. I can't recall for sure what exactly it was
Tichodroma: here at home, not on the desktop, no
(tho I'm not sure what value this exit node is with this censorship)
s/is/has/
Peng
mjt: The same Tor process can be a client and a relay, yes. (Just set ORPort. It's probably set already.)
Tichodroma
that's brave: running an exit node at home. I'd worry that $AGENCY will crash my door and seize any computer in my house.
Peng
mjt: I don't get it, you live in an oppressive country -- or any country! -- and run a Tor exit node from home!? How are you not in jail yet?
ryonaloli_
Peng: not all countries that block tor make it illegal
mjt
well, I run it for ~4 years. I don't see a reason for what I can be jailed
ORPort is ofcourse set, so that other nodes can reach it
I'd not say my country (ru) is oppressive
kvm234
don't run an exit node from your home
mjt
okay, when I point my browser to ORPort of my node as a socks proxy it seems to work fine
kvm234: I heard that several times but every time didn't hear any reason for that

Peng
Wait, I meant SocksPort
mjt
heh
kvm234
mjt: because some people use tor for illegal things. whatever they are doing, it may appear to originate from your home IP address
mjt
in this case tor should not exist
Peng
mjt: If SocksPort is not not set -- Tor listens on 127.0.0.1:9050 by default -- you can use it as a client locally. If you want to expose it on your LAN, obviously you'd have to set "SocksPort 192.168.x.y:9050" or whatever.
ryonaloli_
tor should not exist if people use it illegally?
mjt
if it is illegal to run tor exit node
ryonaloli_
it is not illegal to run it in many places
he means some people use it illegally
mjt
yes I understand the difference
ryonaloli_
which means police might think it comes from you. however in most countries, they will quickly find out it was only an exit, and not for you
kvm234
you likely will not be held responsible for the content but the process could cost you a lot of time and effort
ryonaloli_
kvm234: in most countries, it takes very little time and effort. in some (US/UK especially), it can be a bit worse
oh and australia
kvm234
I thought the US would be one of the best places to run an exit node?
ryonaloli_
it's one of the best in that it's legal here
mjt
for about 2 decades I tried to fight with spam delivering botnets. I can say for sure it is trivial to have a proxy running on your pc, for a completely unsuspecting, unaware, non-guilty housewife or a kid
kvm234
ok good
ryonaloli_
but that doesn't mean feds won't bust down your door and ignorantly arrest you on cp charges
kvm234
gp
i am pretty sure regular proxies can be traces
traced
ryonaloli_
depends on by whom
mjt
when you catch it in operation, yes
spammers don't like leaving logs on botnet members :)
kvm234
"catch it in operation"? everything is recorded and logged
mjt
heh
ryonaloli_
kvm234: it still depends on what is doing the logging. smallers ISPs, smallers ASes, etc are unlikely to be logged by any of our adversaries with any significant retention
kvm234
logged by someone/something/somewhere
ryonaloli_
you need to have a valid threat model :P
simply being logged doesn't matter if it's scattered all over the place and no one organization has access to them all
kvm234
that is probably true. I look at it like the nsa logs everything, almost everywhere and feeds data as requested to law enforcement. I imagine the same is true in other major countries
mjt
you can't realistically log the contents of all packets for example
spamhaus tried hard to catch owners of the C&C botnet operations, numerous times, and it is much more helpful to have friends @various ISPs who can monitor a connection in real time than to have friends @FBI and similar
regular policy doesn't have access to FBI data either
police*
not catch, trace ofcourse :)
(they're not a police)
kvm234
i would prefer not to show up on the radar at all heh...then again simply coming here probably has caused us to be on several watch lists
ryonaloli_
kvm234: there are no "watchlists" for normal people
you have a personality profile, no matter who you are
kvm234
oh great
mjt
heh
ryonaloli_
using things like tor just puts "user of tor" i n the profile, effectively
kvm234
that makes it sound more benign. i hope it is nothing more than that
BarryBlu
the more people who use tor, the more "benign" it becomes :)
ryonaloli_
^^^
BarryBlu
it's that same way for many things: BitTorrent, videogames, MP3's, Linux, even the internet itself
AndroUser2
Im running ORBot on my device which claims to bring you onto the Tor network securely. Does anyone have experience of this app?
ryonaloli_
orbot is well known, it's a legit app
however mobile device security for tor is not as great as desktop security. if you want better anonymity, you'd be better off using tor browser on a real computer
slackie
