Is 'csds.local' a known thing?
shibboleth
So, this CMU story
wtf_fcntl
Quite a scandal
Chocolate_Chip
We should be encouraging university students to go to the news when their University tells them to do something illegal like that
wtf_fcntl
We should encourage more people to work on Tor to make it strong enough to withstand such attacks.
shibboleth
ok, so tor-usage is now blocked by freenode and disparaged by OFTC
so this is it? we just give up?
wtf_fcntl
No, you can use a free shell.
As long as you don't mind the slight security issues.
shibboleth
like someone else having full control over whatever i do with a vps/whatever
also a big, nono
wtf_fcntl
Well, about 1 in 50 or so Tor nodes are unblocked on OFTC.
So you can just keep reconnecting till it works. That's what I do.

shibboleth
yeah, still a major drag
one should get snowden to lean on freenode
wtf_fcntl
They're just lazy.
Some fags were trying to crack SASL passwords.
And Freenode gave up.
shibboleth
what? no tor? are you guys insaaane or are you just in the pocket of the stasi?
wtf_fcntl, yeah. one attach, five hours
and they just shut down the service
wtf_fcntl
From what I heard, the main person in charge of it left Freenode because of drama or something.
I think she idles here actually.
shibboleth
charge of shutting it down?
wtf_fcntl
Er, in #nottor.
No, in charge of keeping it up.
Or at least involved in it. But she left Freenode, so now there's no one who wants to go to the trouble of maintaining it.
shibboleth
keeping tor access or keeping their current excuse?
wtf_fcntl
Keeping Tor access.
shibboleth
ah
sux
wtf_fcntl
Yeah :/
Well, you could always get an http proxy or socks proxy and chain it, and use TLS.
shibboleth
?
wtf_fcntl
Like, you->tor->proxy->irc
shibboleth
urgh
saw how mister "i frikkin lied before congress" james clapper and the new guy (brennan) started blaiming Snowden for the terrorists staying below the radar?
wtf_fcntl
Heh
Funnily enough, Snowden actually made them worse off.
Now, they think the NSA breaks crypto, so they're using their own (terminally broken) homemade crypto.
shibboleth
snowden did not make them worse
off
alkaidadada were already using stenography+ crypto, hiding messages in youtube, youprn etc
looong before snowden
what snowden sis was to rand up and YES, it is happening. And this is the scale at which is is happening
did was to stand up
wtf_fcntl
Stego is not very hard to find.
It's much more effective to just use PGP.
_ADAM
snowdem stood up?
tacky
figuratively. he sure wasn't hiding.
shibboleth
wtf_fcntl, not if the word is yes
wtf_fcntl, and is a video of goats
which host?
irc server?
_ADAM
do terrorist still use youtube?

suelin
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/11/17/milliondollar_hole_in_fbi_tor_story/
arma you being called out by reporters for saying FBI paid for relay_early
_ADAM
1 million dollars?
scripts?
non interactive
theatre
suelin
are you a random word generator
_ADAM
you could be
veggi3
invite to #nottor?
hkqwe
Hey, is torweather down for anyone else?
Chocolate_Chip
torweather?
hkqwe
Chocolate_Chip: Yeah. I'm not able to connect.
thane
Is there any way to troubleshoot a ridiculously slow connection to Tor? I'm getting speeds of 0.5 kbps and tons of empty paths/failed circuits.
wtf_fcntl
thane: It could be that you were stuck with a slow guard.
thane: You can re-install Tor Browser to get a new guard.
thane
wtf_fcntl: I've changed entry nodes multiple times but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
wtf_fcntl
Are you using an ISP that might be trying to disrupt your Tor usage?
thane
I've tried manually picking higher-capacity nodes but it doesn't seem to affect anything.
I don't think so. Nobody else has reported anything.
torchinz
can dns changing affect tor speed and anonymity?
wtf_fcntl
torchinz: Tor uses its own DNS, it doesn't use your system's DNS.
Every site you visit is resolved using the exit node's own DNS server, which prevents DNS leaking.
torchinz
great
i was also surfing thru anonhq and saw its privacy and security guide, is it advisable to follow?
wtf_fcntl
Unlikely. Most of those guides are very bad and cause harm.
If you want to improve Tor Browser's security and privacy, just increase the "security slider".
Anything else (like disabling referers) actually makes you more identifiable.
torchinz
Ohh
thanks wtf_fcntl
qwerty1
try using bridges
thane
bridges are very underused
thane
qwerty1: Yeah I'm going to though I couldn't get them working (but that's probably a Tails issue).
Are the bridges used by a connection stored in the torcc file?
wtf_fcntl
Yes.
thane
So I can add the bridges, then just reload the config like usual?
wtf_fcntl
I believe so.
thane
What is the syntax?
Or a page that explains the syntax
wtf_fcntl
Check the Tor website.
thane
I will if I can load it. Established connections seem to not be affected but making new circuits is working very poorly.
_ADAM
where is the list of tor nodes displayed?
jabwac
would anyone be able to suggest any friendly host providers to run relays ?
looking to spend around $40-$50 pm
never mind found a list- thanks anyways
