vox__: good to hear it works
(I'm using FreeBSD for tor too, by the way, also on my laptop:)
vox__
next on my list of "learning tor" is getting irssi working via torify. at this point, irssi fails to connect to .onion hostnames due to the following error: "torsocks[24054]: [connect] Connection to a local address are denied since it might be a TCP DNS query to a local DNS server. Rejecting it for safety reasons.
Charles
it's old issue, i'd suggest using weechat that has builtin socks support. Or use a middle http proxy (ie polipo) that will work with irssi
vox__
ok
Charles
or maybe someone have a workaround i'm not aware of
vox__
Charles: following your advice, but weechat fails connection with "irc: sending data to server: error 9 Bad file descriptor"
google is not very helpful with this error
Charles
you have to add a proxy using /proxy add tor socks5 127.0.0.1 9050, then add a server using /server add *, then /set irc.server.NETWORKNAME.proxy tor
maybe we should switch to #nottor

hi
Sweet
quick question. how to use tor as a socks5 proxy without opening the browser?
say from the command line

Bysmyyr
use tails
wtf_fcntl
Bysmyyr: That doesn't really answer his question. :P
Sweet
bruh
Bysmyyr
actually no but that is safest way :P
wtf_fcntl
He's just asking how to run Tor standalone, not how to use Tor securely to protect from misbehaving or malicious applications.
arma
sweet: "it depends". what OS are you on?
Sweet
debian
apt-get install tor right?
yeah i ust did that
arma
https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian
yes. after that you might enjoy using a newer repo, depending on which debian you have.
(which tor version did it give you?)
Sweet
idk how to check
oh
0.2.5.12
what is latest version of tor?
i use debian 8 jessie
arma
that version is still acceptable
but the latest stable is 0.2.6.10
(see above url)
Sweet
arma, how to upgrade to latest one then?
arma
do the things on the page
or be happy with 0.2.5.x
Sweet
oh ok will try
but since i already have tor 2.5 installed, do i need to remove this one first? arma
arma
no, it's fine
Sweet
ok cool ty are you a dev of tor
arma
yes indeed
tensionhead
hi, I am running a relay and I am wondering about one outbound connection displayed as 0.0.0.0:0 (??)
in arm
arma
tensionhead: sounds like an arm bug
Sweet
arma, how long have you been devving for tor? since its birth?
tensionhead
arma: ah ok, it is always there..

Sweet
oh true arma it works now. ty
tensionhead
arma: googling for this bug does not show promising results though
arma
tensionhead: the arm developer has been working on what amounts to a rewrite. it's been a while though.
tensionhead: does it show other connections, and also this one? does it otherwise work ok?
Sweet
arma, i have a question. when i close the tor service on my computer, then open it again, do i get a new ip?
arma
sweet: you get a new circuit. this may or may not be a different exit relay.
tensionhead
arma: yep, it does show other connections and it seems otherwise to be running ok..atm is very cpu hungry
Sweet
arma, ah thats what i meant
alright
arma
sweet: all of this said, are you planning to blast a bunch of connections over tor? because that would be rude. :)
Sweet
destroying tor was my one and only goal this whole time
muahahahaahahah
NSA is going to give me a promotion, a raise and a new car
arma, how long does a circuit last?
mrphs
usually 10mins. but it depends.
Sweet
oh ok
weasel
maybe you should read the FAQ?
Sweet
so does that mean that if i connect to IRC with tor, it will disconnect me from IRC in 10 mins?
i mean, shouldn't it?
mrphs
arma
nope. also, have i got the url for you!
https://www.torproject.org/docs/documentation#UpToSpeed
you'll love it :)
weasel
Sweet
is oftc blocking tor?
ibbun
hey!
what would be a good way to connect to oftc via tor?
i know there's this: 37lnq2veifl4kar7.onion but i can't seem to connect using this hidden service.
slackie
(Action) hi there \o
Ubik
Third time's a charm?
Guess not.
proscan
whats the linux that only goes thru tor?
Charles
tails
proscan
where all DNS lookups happen through tor by default?
tails ok only live CD? do you recommend it?
Charles
better ask #taols
#tails
but yeah, i recommend it, as probably anyone here
proscan
ok thx
:D
wgreenhouse
if you don't understand how to do firewall and packet sniffing stuff yourself, tails is a safe option that will keep you from shooting yourself in the foot
proscan
I have trouble with DNS, I'm trying to email gmail,I added an openic DNS server in the mailing software and I'm using tor in the proxy, even so the smtp messages show my IP.
totally crazy.
maybe openic dns servers is relaying my IP to smtp of gmail or whatever.
wgreenhouse
proscan: sounds like your SMTP client's fault; I don't think there's any way that could be a DNS issue.
proscan: but you should not be using both Tor as a SOCKS proxy and some non-Tor DNS in the same client
you should just let the SOCKS proxy forward DNS (i.e. SOCKS5 or SOCKS4a)
proscan
ok
Algebr
From what I understand, the more tor nodes there are, the faster the tor network itself becomes?
proscan
anyone has ideas on how to send bulk mail?
marcusw
