Anyone can take a question?
Sebastian
anrsm: if you have a question, you need to ask it.
anrsm
I installed tor, but open the IRC, and connected to a server, but are not using Tor, Tor is there a tutorial for IRC (Windows)

Sebastian
I use tor on network efnet?
Sebastian
I think you cannot use Tor on efnet
anrsm
:(
tyld
efnet won't let you
the best you can do is use some other host as a socks proxy
anrsm
Yeah, problem is to find some socks, tor the benefit is that it is faster even find one, anyway thank you, /;

hapsburg
anybody ever use wireshark to watch tor?
i'm experiencing some odd behavior: on my loopback interface my system talks with vidalia about every second and every other packet has a bad tcp checksum... is this OK?
my normal outbound ethernet port (which tor uses) looks good but an inbound transparent proxy port has the same problem with bad checksums
atagar
hapsburg: not sure about the bad checksum, but the secondly correspondance with vidalia is probably BW events (reports of the bandwidth being used)
hapsburg
atagar: i figured that constant communication with vidalia over the control port was just that but i figured there's no good reason for two local programs to have bad checksums when talking on the loopback adapter... that's the big concern of mine
it seems to be killing my transparent proxying of DNS requests too
DNS requests come in OK but when tor returns the DNS results to the client the checksum is bad on that too
and that seems to get the client to think that the DNS request went bad somehow and to not request the content
dmkae
hi all
anyone can assit with something?
hapsburg
... i might
dmkae
ok great
more or less
how do i setup tor?
:P
hapsburg
oh gosh
dmkae
sorry for being nooby
:P
hapsburg
you know you can go to www.torproject.org and find all the answers you need?
dmkae
oh, sorry
:P
yeah, i did try that, but could you give me the summary?
:)
hapsburg
i can answer your questions but it might be better if you spend some time to learn it before asking all sorts of questions
what OS are you running?
dmkae
win xp
hapsburg
did you download the bundle? or do you not want it?
dmkae
is it necessary?
hapsburg
depends
:-P
dmkae
on?
hapsburg
what you want
dmkae
i want to connect with tor
:)
hapsburg
actually, maybe for your first time you should download the zero install, just so its easier to not mess things up
just an idea
dmkae
ok
is it just an .exe?

hapsburg
yes, it appears to be
ever been here: http://www.torproject.org/easy-download.html.en
dmkae
ok
one last q
can i use any irc client for tor?
including hydra?
hapsburg
never heard of hydra
dmkae
me either
:P
it's a client i use
dont remember how i got it
hapsburg
if you're running tor on windows it probably means you need to concerned about data leakage, try to pick an IRC client that speaks socks or at least will let you setup a proxy to talk with local port 8118
dmkae
any recommendations ?
hapsburg
my recommendation would be to stop using windows
dmkae
yea, ive heard that recommendation many times
:D
i used to agree
but now, i say, windows works, more or less
games mostly if not entirely need it
hapsburg
it works for now, and it's horribly insecure
dmkae
yea, but im a desktop client
my computer is not a critical network server
hapsburg
use a windows box for games, a unix box for internet stuff, if you can
dmkae
ah k
i read that irc is really dangerous
hapsburg
perhaps it is... never heard of that before
dmkae
but you didnt give me any irc client recommendations
you recommend unix? as in bsd?
hapsburg
yeah, i don't use windows so i am not in the position to do so... go to www.download.com and look for some irc clients there
MK_FG
dmkae, linux is certainly easier and you can have fairly secure setup with it as well
hapsburg
you sound like the non-super-nerd type... i'd suggest that you try debian or ubuntu for your first unix type system
dmkae
i can try to be super nerd
i can nerd rage quit
:)
hapsburg
its fun to try :-)
dmkae
yep
hapsburg
if you do try to switch it would be best for your sanity to get two boxes: keep your old windows one and get another (new or used, it doesn't matter) and install linux onto that
dmkae
kinda annoying to have different pcs to do different stuff
yea
i tried emulating
didnt help my sanity
:P
hapsburg
think of it as a migration of sorts if that helps
dmkae
i try to use open source programs on windows though
as much as i can
:)
hapsburg
emulating, in my experience, is good for testing things out briefly, not so good for feeling out an OS over the course of a couple of hours
dmkae
i tried with vmware
:)
hapsburg
it works
dmkae
not for 3d acceleration though
hapsburg
pfff... you're asking vmware a lot when you do that
dmkae
yea
i know
hapsburg
so how's your installation going?
dmkae
if i want to run my old windows games and i dont want to install them on my main windows box
that's what i want
??
hapsburg
go ahead and get tor set up and you can download your new irc client over tor
dmkae
ah right
i forgot
MK_FG
dmkae, You can use wine
hapsburg
i hear you can use a program called 'wine' on linux but i've never gotten it to work right
dmkae
yea
MK_FG
Should make most games work on linux distro
dmkae
does wine work will all programs?
MK_FG
Well.. not exactly ;)
dmkae
i mean directx
.net
MK_FG
Most of them, anyway
dmkae
so many programs i need use those
MK_FG
Most times there are actually better native alternatives
dmkae
not for drivers and such
MK_FG
Unless, of course, it's games or some professional software
dmkae
yea
little bit of both
hapsburg
it's not a good idea to try to just jump to a linux machine.... you'd be asking for lots of trouble... get familiar first then try moving things over to the new box
MK_FG
Video card drivers - maybe, rest are fine
dmkae
industry software people are screwed
i mean those who use those programs
most of them are all made with .net
MK_FG
hapsburg, "getting familiar" actually involves "jumping" in my experience ;)
dmkae
so youre screwed if you dont have windows
we arent all network admins
or "sysops"
or even know what a .plan was
:D
MK_FG
Maybe
dmkae
i know what a .plan is
:)
MK_FG
I have a feeling that it's getting so offtopic...
dmkae
:P
hapsburg
dmkae: so how's your setup going?
dmkae
havent downloaded it yet
hapsburg
fun times
dmkae
i need to setup proxy for tor
right?
hapsburg
yes, you will
dmkae
k
hapsburg
err nevermind... you won't
dmkae
ok
hapsburg
apparently the last zero install i used was different (couple years ago) or i just forgot how the zero install works
dmkae
ah
everyone here uses tor?
StrangeCharm
not all the time
dmkae
k
StrangeCharm
right now, for instance, i'm connected to oftc natively
dmkae
ah
oftc is like freenode, right?
as in tech/open source base
d
StrangeCharm
not sure
dmkae
k
hapsburg
yes, as far as i know... run a search on oftc for more info
oftc = friend
StrangeCharm
oftc = friend, hapsburg?
hapsburg
oftc is our friend
StrangeCharm
got it
dmkae
oftc is friendly though
:)
well, alright, thank you all for your help. I'll go setup tor and reboot, if i have more questions, Ill be back
:)
hapsburg
........... dmkae doesn't need to reboot
wanoskarnet
Any developers? http://l6nvqsqivhrunqvs.onion/?do=topic&id=11455#post54454
katmagic
There are no citations in that thread.
hapsburg
for the record it looks like my issue about checksums was caused by my loopback and extra ethernet adapters being set to do 'offload' of checksum calculations... not allowed to change settings while adapters are up, apparently (using 'ethtool'), will see if works later
npouillard
Hi all, I would like to customize my local tor proxy to add a custom HTTP Header to the responses sent back to the browser.
Do anyone knows how to start?
Sebastian
npouillard: Tor can't do that. You might have luck using an http proxy like privoxy that allows filtering
npouillard
Sebastian: actually I have privoxy on top of Tor already
and since I selectively white-list a bunch of sites I would like to know when the connection is with Tor or not
(Action) have to go to lunch
gamambel
hi
I still have this strange drop in node traffic... anyone?
i cannot believe the tor network is satisfied...
dr|z3d
gamambel: any more info?
perhaps you've noticed a drop in traffic from china?
gamambel
see graph at http://anonymizer2.torservers.net/
dr|z3d
perhaps your provider is doing something fishy?
gamambel
the machine should be on gbit dedicated, and the 4 nodes are configured to allow 15MB/s each
i never got more than 30mb/s, then it dropped to 20mb/s and now to 10mb/s
mikeperry
gamambel: it probably fell recently because the bwscans just recently died
gamambel
bwscans?
who died?
:)
Sebastian
hm
torserversDOTnet1 isn't ranked high at all
mikeperry
gamambel: there are tor bandwidth scanners that measure node capacity to provide fast nodes with higher ratings
gamambel: right now they are down
Sebastian
there are ~30 nodes with a better weight
gamambel
all four nodes are not near their capacity
