Sudo doesn't seem produce any results.
Whooops...I forgot the TAR part
Here's the command I'm using--------------> sudo tar tor-browser-gnu-linux-i686-1.0.7-dev-en-US
Here's the result I get-----------------> bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('
arma
you need to tell tar what to do
mib_97fkep
How about this- "Tar- go to hell"?
nickm
When Runa said "sudo tar -zxvf', why did the "tar" and "-zxvf" parts strike you as optional? ;)
mib_97fkep
Man, that TAR stuff is so confusing to me.
Ok...here's what I entered-----> sudo tar -zxvf tor-browser-gnu-linux-i686-1.0.7-dev-en-US(3).tar.gz
Here's the result------> bash: syntax error near unexpected token `('
arma
ah. you should learn about "tab"
type in tor-brow and then hit tab. it will auto-complete the filename in a way that bash will like.
certain characters in filenames, like spaces, need to be escaped to prevent your bash from getting confused.
mib_97fkep
Where do I type in tor-brow?
Terminal?
arma
on the sudo... line above
i can understand that this is frustrating for you. please understand that most of your confusion is due to not understanding ubuntu, not to not understanding tor. :}
mib_97fkep
That I certainly understand.
Please, show me the syntax I'm to use.

arma
also, where are you untarring it from, and to? if you want to untar it onto your usb stick, you'll want to make sure it gets there. it's not clear from the above that what people have told you to type will do that.
mib_97fkep
I was trying to untar it right on the stick itself
....as that's where the tar file is located.
arma
ah. great. carry on then.
mib_97fkep
I have no idea of the syntax I'm to use.
arma
you have three copies of this thing in your current working directory then? it seems you started with one?
mib_97fkep
Let me check
arma
the "(3)" makes me think firefox has downloaded four of them.
mib_97fkep
No, there's only 1 copy on the stick.
arma
why is it called (3) then? :)
mib_97fkep
Yes, I would've downloaded off of the web that many times.
arma
in that case, type "sudo tar -zxvf tor-brow" and don't hit enter. hit tab instead. see if that auto-completes the rest of the file for you.
mib_97fkep
The extraction's running....I'll have to wait.
so far....so good.
arma
that's a good sign, since usb keys can be slow
mib_97fkep
Whooops.....here comes the error messages...
arma
it also is a bad sign, since tbb will have to load from that usb key whenever you run it :)
mib_97fkep
Nuts.....I'll post the error messages.
arma
vegard's comment about not working on a fat filesystem might be spot on.
you can't make symlinks on fat32, right?
mib_97fkep
Well....here are the error messages------------> http://pastebin.com/1nrHcPCR
The memory stick is formatted to FAT 32
arma
are you only going to be using it for your ubuntu system?
or do you also want it to work in windows?
mib_97fkep
Both would be nice.....but...I mostly use Ubuntu

arma
in that case, your best bet for now is to reformat your flash disk to ext2 or ext3 or something else that supports symlinks
(Action) goes to open a trac ticket for the symlink issue
mib_97fkep
Ok.....I'll try it
Ok....I formatted the stick to ext4.....then I untarred the Torbrowser.
Apparently it installed....but when I click on "start-tor-browser".....nothing happens.
helix
mib_97fkep: right now you have to execute it from a terminal
mib_97fkep: like ./start-tor-browser
mib_97fkep
Oh well...I'll give it try some other day.
Thanks everyone
arma
you might be so close :)
mib_97fkep
Well, I didn't quit yet....
Here's what I get ----> ./start-tor-browser polipo is already running as PID 958 Please shut down the above process(es) before running Tor Browser Bundle.
The error message is-----> polipo is already running as PID 958 Please shut down the above process(es) before running Tor Browser Bundle.
arma
sudo /etc/init.d/polipo stop
you probably already have polipo installed and running. tbb-linux wants to run one too.
mib_97fkep
IT WORKS!!!!!!
Thanks.....all is well
helix
cool
mib_97fkep
Man....you folks oughta get paid for this!
m
hola
i try to use tor browser bundle
works nice
but cant use adobe flash
Guest1900
installer fu*ks up w/ system-installed FP
phobos
did you read the big warning on the download page?
https://www.torproject.org/download.html.en#Warning
and if you use tor browser bundle, there is no install
StrangeCharm
is there a good way to make firefox try pages as https by default, before falling back to http if that doesn't work?
helix
StrangeCharm: did you try mikeperry and pde's https-everywhere extension?
StrangeCharm
helix, https everywhere uses specific rules to create https redirects for a small set of sites, which makes sense: wikipedia for instance needs an url rewrite. what i want is a general 'try https' rule
helix
ah
pde
StrangeCharm: what do you mean by "if that doesn't work"?
I don't think there's any way to tell if https "didn't work", in general
Here's a good example:
StrangeCharm
pde, there are some situations that are ambiguous, but getting an invalid response, or a 'not https server here' reply are clear
pde
take your favourite friend's livejournal homepage, and replace the "http" with "https"
StrangeCharm
presumably, that doesn't redirect you to an https version of the same page, but to a general lj https page
pde
well it doesn't "redirect"
it answers, but the response looks like this:
https://www.livejournal.com/
StrangeCharm
right
ideally, i'd be able to blacklist those sites
pde
StrangeCharm: but if you really want to try this, you could start with the HTTPS Everywhere code
add rule that remaps every page to HTTPS
and then try to catch all the error conditions, recognise the fact that "something had gone wrong" in all the ways it could go wrong, and fall back to HTTP in each of those cases
I just remained to be convinced that the resulting browsing experience would be very good
StrangeCharm
well, i was hoping that someone else had already done the work, and i could take advantage of the spoils
pde
heh
my biased advice is: use HTTPS Everywhere for the time being, and if you aren't willing to do any coding, be patient :)
in the medium term I expect it will gradually expand to cover a lot more sites
and at some point in the distant future, perhaps Google will persuade everyone to switch to secure SPDY

Would it be a good idea to mark September 20th as "Tor day" since it is the anniversary of the initial release of Tor? And make it an official thing to promote Tor on that day by telling friends about Tor and suggesting them to setup a (bridge) relay?
Liste
Concerning TorBrowser- must my memory sticks be always formatted in Ext2, 3 or 4 for them to work on Ubuntu?
Anybody here?

katmagic
Trac gives authentication errors for everything.
WIKI_VIEW privileges are required to perform this operation on WikiStart

Goldstein

xarcus
hehe
Goldstein
just me
xarcus
you running tor?
Goldstein
someone will probably be with you soon
xarcus: u tell me
xarcus
probably easier for you to tell me then for me to figure that out :P
i'm trying to help a friend in china access facebook
nobody wants to help me out with a bridge?
Sebastian_
xarcus: unfortunately, most bridges are blocked in China.
xarcus: the best thing for you to do would be to run a private bridge for your friend
xarcus
i figured if it was a private one it wouldn't be blocked..
yeah but i'm behind a firewall at university :(
Sebastian_
see, if you ran a private bridge, would you tell random strangers about it on irc? That's the big problem here ;)
xarcus
well i would, yeah..
Sebastian_
right, it wouldn't remain private very long then
xarcus
hmm.. well even if you told 1000 people about my bridge.. what bad could happen to me?
Goldstein
xarcus: the chinese would find out and block it?
xarcus
yeah, well i guess that's what happens to most who run with default bridge as public..
guess i got to figure a way to tunnel through my firewall like logmein does
bridge please? pm me or email, i only give it to 1 person...
hi liste
Liste
Hello
I'm new to this....
xarcus
you running tor?
yet?
Liste
....how do you find a list of "Chats" on a server?
Yes,....running Tor
xarcus
try searchirc.com
i'm looking for a bridge..
glad to hear it
punk
:)
Sebastian_
xarcus: enough
xarcus
what you liked dead chat better? :)
hi n8fr8
n8fr8
howdy
xarcus
how are you doing?
Goldstein
xarcus: with support channels such as this, activity is regarded as high priority. when you engage in idle chat it is distruptive. I encourage you to take it to #nottor
n8fr8
pretty good, except i am out of milk and eggs.
and you, xarcus?
xarcus
ok goldstein sorry
i'm looking for a bridge n8fr8 can you help me?
n8fr8
Brooklyn Bridge? sorry can't help you. i have to go now.
good luck.
Renfield
I need assistance getting Tor working again.
Actually, it now works!
Wow, I didn't change anything from the last time I tried, so this is odd, but oh well.
xarcus
what's the prob renfield?
Renfield
Nothing any more.
I tested Tor button and it said that there was a problem reaching HTTP.
I tried it again and it said it was successful.
xarcus
do you have a tor bridge set up?
Renfield
No, but I do have a relay.
xarcus
i'm looking for somebody with a bridge they can share
Goldstein
https://www.torproject.org/bridges
xarcus: tor-dev is *not* for asking for support
xarcus
ok Goldstein, i'm off tor-dev
swissknife
xarcus: Gallus looks for a coole place to survive :)

How do I configure Chatzilla to run Tor?
Guest1942
Anybody around?
Sebastian
if it has a proxy option, choose socks5 and localhost:9050 as proxy address
phobos
or look at the wiki instructions
Guest1942
Doesn't look like it does.
Sebastian
phobos: we have no chatzilla instructions there...
phobos
we used to
Sebastian
can't find it at least
https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO/IrcSilc
phobos
under the "how to torify various programs"
Sebastian
not on https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO either
jrf99c5
Is there an easier irc client that'll run Tor?
Goldstein
Guest309: are you using firefox?
whoops
IIRC chatzilla uses firefox's proxy settings
one could try and see

so ttdnsl gives 8.8.8.8 more honey to his bees ?
soultcer
DNS should be added as an extenstion to tor so that every exit works as a resolver
dr|z3d
soultcer: It is, and it does, or can do.
soultcer: Add the line "DNSPort 53" to your torrc and point your DNS at localhost.
soultcer
dr|z3d: I thought that it only supports A and PTR records that way
dr|z3d
It's not a complete solution, this is true. But it works well enough for most purposes.
Jabber is the only thing I've had issues with.
soultcer
Using the solution that ioerror suggested (DNS cache that uses tor's DNSPort and if it doesn't work falls back to ttdns) is probably best for privacy.
dr|z3d
Quite probably it is.. really depends on your use case.
soultcer
If you want to do a lot of DNS queries ttdns is too slow anyway
Although, it is safer to only use ttdns in combination with a DNSSEC-verifying resolver.
