where can i find current detailed statistics on tor nodes?
phobos
california: it depends, http://metrics.torproject.org is one source
http://torstatus.blutmagie.de/ is another
california
phobos: so the total number of nodes is 1800?
im trying to figure out how tor got so fast
mikeperry
we've added a ton of exit capacity, and we also corrected a major load balancing bug
california
mikeperry: great. please keep up the good work :)
Sebastian
also China is doing a good job :/
mikeperry
yes, that too
supplicant
i downloaded the tor bundle for windows yesterday and i was able to launch it without any trouble using the onion icon. today, however, i get an error message when i try to launch tor via the icon stating that it's "unable to launch vidalia". what can i do to correct this?
mikeperry
at some point we should start experiencing slowdown due to the http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2007/07/18/economics-of-tor-performance/ effect, but we may have enough performance improvements in 0.2.2.x to counteract that temporarily
Sebastian: I am actually seing better guard utilization according to the bandwidth auth results though, which means clients are starting to upgrade away from those broken tor version

Sebastian
Tor's have rotated guards monthly for quite some time though
mikeperry
Sebastian: yes, but they were choosing them uniformly as they did so
Sebastian
erm, grammar fail
mikeperry
and the effect of this was evident in the bw scan results
Sebastian
ah, but they chose them correctly in 0.2.0.x and in 0.2.1.x stable, right?
mikeperry
but it's become less pronounced recntly
probably because we un-recommended all the versions that were broken
Sebastian
If that is true I have high hopes for Thandy. once we have msi packages, that is ;)
mikeperry
yeah, what are the major barriers to thandy deployment?
Sebastian
reliably built msi packages basically so that I can deploy a testing setup with actual users to figure out the remaining problems
We've been blocking on those ever since coderman disappeared :/

any assistance w/r/t the "unable to start vidalia" error message would be much appreciated
Goldstein
does the message log say anything?
AndrewM
Hi, I'm having an issue with Tor, and I was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction. Using the latest Tor browser bundle (just downloaded it), I've been trying to download some fairly large files over HTTP. However, the downloads keep ending prematurely around 64MB - usually at exactly 64MB, but sometimes a bit before, sometimes a bit after. I couldn't find anything with Google about a 64M
B cap, and I've tried connecting through different routes (and with different exit nodes)
Anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on?
Goldstein
Well in general, nodes might go down periodically at inconvenient times for you
AndrewM
I've tried a good 5 times, though - I'd be stunned different nodes were going down at the exact same point in the download 5 times in a row, no?
Goldstein
as a workaround you might be able to use a download manager that allows resumption of DL
how long does it take to get to 64MB?
AndrewM
5-7 min, usually
It might be worth mentioning, as well, that Tor browser/firefox doesn't treat it like a failed download when it hits the 64 MB mark - it just suddenly says "Finished" even though it was only ~50% done
Goldstein
dunno, sorry. people who kight will be back soon. stay tuned
might*
AndrewM
No worries, I appreciate the help in any event
velope
AndrewM: if you're running on windows and are experiencing truncated downloads of very large files, you are probably running into a polipo bug.
the quick workaround is to right-click on the "tor enabled" part of your firefox window, select preferences, and uncheck 'use polipo'.
this will give a large download a better chance of succeeding.
the downside is that you will probably experience intermittent timeout failures in regular browsing.
AndrewM
Alright, trying that now

velope
also, when the download is done, just re-checking 'use polipo' might not work -- you might have to restart everything.
for more than an occasional big download (but you're not going to download zillions of 64 Mb files via Tor, right? it's not intended for that and doing so is antisocial to the volunteer network),
AndrewM
Nope, I just need to get this one file across, which is why it's so frustrating that it wasn't working
Thanks for the advice; I've unchecked 'Use Polipo' and restarted, and just started the download. Let's see if it works
velope
a better windows setup is to get Torcap2 from http://vv.carleton.ca/~cat/ and also the wget utility, and configure them to download via tor but excluding polipo. i'm not aware of a how-to on that, though i suppose i should do it sometime.
AndrewM
velope: Yes! Thank you - I've finally got that file across
I appreciate the help - thanks again
arma
http://freehaven.net/~arma/tor-0.2.2.14-alpha.tar.gz "does it build for you?"
helix, phobos, ^
helix
gracias
arma: builds for me on debian unstable, x86_64
(Action) starts up the packaging engines
phobos
are you able to build everything?
helix
phobos: I think so. I haven't tried to do the big long package builds, but i have successfully built on all platforms. I can try and let you know if I have problems.
the big long package builds for osx & windows I mean
phobos
ok, i was thinking of the expert and vidalia bundles for both osx and windows
helix
I haven't done the vidalia bundle for windows yet
arma
ok. i'm going to tag this sucker.
bja
(Action) ducks before getting tagged

Etsil
How can I configure Xchat so that Servers will accept, and not ban, Tor?
L0rD`
Etsil: you can't configure xchat "the right way" , you can try to give you through vidalia a new identity and hope that the exitnode isn't on a banlist. or you can force tor to use a specific exitnode, which is clean, using the option "MapAddress" in torrc
Etsil
I have several torrc files......which one should I use?
L0rD`
some servers like freenode have special routines of guaranting access through tor
hmm on which os r u?
Etsil
Ubuntu 10.04
L0rD`
do you have vidalia installed?
if so it should be in /home/username/.vidalia
Etsil
Yes, Vidalia is installed
Here's an odd line in my Torrc folder- # This file was generated by Tor; if you edit it, comments will not be preserved
L0rD`
yes that's standard
Etsil
If I add anything to the file those additions won't be saved?
L0rD`
they gonna be saved
Etsil
Thanks
L0rD`
now you can add:"MapAddress irc.serveryouwish.net irc.serveryouwish.net.nameofanexitnodeyouchoose.exit"
a list of exitnodes are here: http://torstatus.blutmagie.de/
you have to choose an exit node u trust and where the irc ports aren't rejected
you can find it out by clicking on the names what is rejected
Etsil
Good, thanks.
L0rD`
for oftc it would be for example: MapAddress irc.oftc.net irc.oftc.net.anona.exit
you have to save your torrc and restart tor
than it should work
then
"anona" in the example above is an exit node
and you have to configure xchat using socks5 proxy ip: 127.0.0.1 port: 9050 ; I hope that's clear
Etsil
Yes, that part is clear
L0rD`
nice
and always try to use ssl with tor
Etsil
How do I set SSL for Tor?
L0rD`
oftc , freenode and other irc servers allow connections with ssl using port 6697 in case of oftc
in the "network list" in xchat should be :"irc.oftc.net/6697"
Etsil
To get Tor SSL I change the Xchat port setting to 6697?
ok
L0rD`
no tor in itself uses ssl ;) buuuut xchat should communicate securily with the irc server through ssl
Etsil
Alright....good
L0rD`
freenode for example uses 7000 or 7070. others 9999.... I would always search the hp of the network if it supports ssl , usually it even stands on the motd
you're welcome
Etsil
On my Vidalia Settings>Advanced it says the Control Port is 9051....is that supposed to be used instead of 9050?
L0rD`
that is just fine
Etsil
Good.
L0rD`
9050 is your socks listen address
Goldstein
Control port != Socks Port
L0rD`
yes
SocksListenAddress 127.0.0.1 (9050 standard port)
ControlPort 9051 (you can read that in the torrc)
Etsil
Should I change my Control port to 9050 instead of 9051?
Goldstein
no
L0rD`
noooooooo
Goldstein
leave it alone
L0rD`
everything is fine
Etsil
I'll leave it alone
L0rD`
through the controlport vidalia communicates with tor
Etsil
Is Tor typically slower than the usual web?
Sebastian
yes
Instead of just going to your destination, you go to three different places before
Also, many users share only a few Tor relays
Etsil
Where do I put the irc.oftc.net/6697 in Xchat? I see the Network List in Xchat.....but don't really know how to add that.
L0rD`
in the network list should be "oftc"
Etsil
Yes, it's there.
L0rD`
edit it
and then at the top server for oftc
add the line
or just click on the entry c&p and press enter ^^
and click on "use ssl for all servers and allow invalid certificates"
cause mostly the ssl certificates are self-signed
and in case of oftc you don't have to worry
Sebastian
that's crap
the exit node could just serve up the invalid cert
What one really wants to do is to make sure they got the right cert and not allow invalid certs
L0rD`
yeah ok listen to seb
he's telling the truth :)
Etsil
.....and I hope he's right.
L0rD`
jep
Etsil
Well, I made the changes to Xchat but I'm still using my IP and not being routed through Tor.....so I think by doing a /Whois
L0rD`
you have to reconnect
Etsil
Ok....
L0rD`
just type in /reconnect
Etsil
Looks like /reconnect worked but I'm still on my same old IP
L0rD`
hmmm
Etsil
Should I restart Vidalia too?
L0rD`
in the network settings of xchat u have it configured to use socks5 proxy for all connections?
Etsil
Let me look again.....
Yes, I'm set to socks5
But.....Hostname and Port are blank
L0rD`
ieks
Sebastian
hostname is localhost, port 9050
L0rD`
*ack*
Etsil
Hostname and Port changes I made were in the Proxy Server settings of Xchat
L0rD`
yes
Etsil
Oh.....my connection was "banned".
L0rD`
u see ^^
Etsil
I don't know what you're asking?
L0rD`
well it worked theoretically but the exitnode was on a banlist
Etsil
Oh....ok.
....sad commentary of my life
I just have to find a nice exitnode.....right?
L0rD`
for short solution: right click on vidalia and choose "new identity" and try to reconnect
or do the torrc modifications as described above
yes
Etsil
Ok....
Success!
Thanks folks!
L0rD`
you're welcome
Etsil
In the previous problem I had, I just Change Identity'ed until I was allowed to connect. Does that make sense?
L0rD`
that's the short solution yes, u need luck that vidalia chooses not banned exitnodes ;)
Etsil
....and then I have to find a good exit node...right?
and edit my Torrc file.
L0rD`
yes u might with mapaddress
Etsil
Good. Thanks again.
L0rD`
I hope u got the log and can find what I said before
Etsil
Yes, I copied all.
L0rD`
nice
Akira
FUUUUU! Another bridged blocked in China!
waltman
Huh. No connections on my bridge at the moment.
oh wait, now there are 4
jn
Would setting PublishServerDescriptor to 0 be the right thing to do on a private bridge?
`BlAdE`
Hi, i have this error when i test tor+polipo: "check your proxy or polipo config". polipo.log says "Couldn't bind: Address already in use Couldn't establish listening socket: Address already in use". I don't know where is supposed to be the "proxy" log file for check it.
I read this for install http://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.fr#relay
Sebastian
you probably have privoxy installed and running
`BlAdE`
Sebastian: ps aux | grep privo
blade 24881 0.0 0.0 7636 944 pts/2 S+ 19:25 0:00 grep privo
it seems than not privoxy running
arma
two polipos running?
`BlAdE`
arma, what is the name for the pid please ?
polkit ?
murb
`BlAdE`: what does netstat -lpn say?
`BlAdE`
murb, http://pastebin.com/H75RJSAn
Sebastian
wgat is seeks?
is it this? http://www.seeks-project.info/site/
`BlAdE`
surely...
i forget it
Sebastian
whatever it is, it is conflicting with polipo.
`BlAdE`
Established listening socket on port 8118.
in log file
it seems it works !
arma
hm. so yes, what is seeks?
Sebastian
arma: I'm almost positive it is the project that I linked to
Looks like some kind of web crawler stuff
