If anyone could explain it, it would be grate
anyone knows?
arma
allowing replays lets an observer see the same path over and over
mib0
arma: I understand why replay does that, so repeating messages are discarded, but I don't see the connection with using the same anonymous return address
twice
say the same return address, but different messages, why is it bad?
anyone knows?
what is wrong with two different messages with the same anonymous return address in chaum mix-net?
mmm
This seems like a RTFM question, but is there a general way to use Tor with xchat?
I found a howto for freenode
but it looks somehow specific to freenode
never mind
I guess oftc is fairly tolerant
Efnet
not so much so

is it possible to run traceroute through a tor proxy to see the route taken? if so, is it safe to do so (that is, no DNS leaks, etc.)?
benp
lllll: The network map in Vidalia shows you which relays (usually 3) are being used to communicate with the final internet destination.
Not sure what you mean by 'run traceroute through a tor proxy'.
You could run traceroute at the command line to see the route to the first of the three relays (the entry node or 'guard').
Of course traceroute would leak DNS unless you use -n.
lllll
a programming course requires me to run traceroute (the regular way), but I was curious if it was possible to do it through the tor proxy...
benp
Tor does not relay UDP.

katmagic
lllll: No. traceroute depends on ICMP, which Tor doesn't relay.
lllll
oh i c. so that means traceroute should ignore all *_proxy environment variables (like http_proxy, etc.) and just connect directly by default, right?
katmagic
I think so. Some proxies do relay arbitrary IP packets, though, so it might not.
benp
What are you hoping to discover about the tor circuit? All you can do with traceroute is discover the route to the first relay. The second and third communicate independent of your client, so unless you have shell access to run traceroute there, you can't know their routes.
katmagic
I think lllll wants to see the output of traceroute as if it were run from the exit, not the route to the exit.
lllll
yes, i prefer to see the output from traceroute as if it were run from the exit, w/o actually revealing that to the destination that it was me that sent the original traceroute request...
benp
Well, either way, that's not a service the tor network provides.
katmagic
This is somewhat #nottor, but you do understand that the utility that traceroute provides is almost wholly dependent upon where it is run *from*, right?
benp
Not to sound harsh, but from the point of view of the owners of those machines, it's none of the tor client's business.
katmagic
If you don't really care, though, http://centralops.net/co/ might be of interest.
lllll
i understand... i was just curious, anyways... i didn't even know if the question made sense, given the way traceroute works
katmagic
What do the SOCKS error codes mean?
kmacy
strictly speaking this isn't a tor question
but is it possible to exploit IRC clients to determine where user is actually coming from?
dr|z3d
kmacy: Potentially. ctcp time is one method.
kmacy
how would that work?
dr|z3d
Well, if the client reports the time, you have a timezone, assuming user hasn't ntentionally obfuscated that.
kmacy
ahh
ok
any others?
dr|z3d
Knowlegable users will either ensure UTC (or a random timezone), or disable ctcp responses althogher. :)
kmacy
dad
hah
dr|z3d
No other methods I know of, without actually finding 'ploits in the client, or just observing the hostmask (where available).

How long is the encryption key?
Some guy is trying to convince me it's perfectly practical (and it occures, too, apparently) that the US government just brute forces their way through the layers -- yeah, right.
Sebastian
alyxuk: people don't break encryption anymore usually, it's too expensive. Attacking the installed base is much easier
alyxuk
thats what i thought
it seems simply impractical to break through :/
similar to trying to break into a safe with a spoon, instead of a key :P
Sebastian
that said, it is of course not unthinkable that someone found a flaw in rsa or aes or *, and didn't tell anyone except government x. Unlikely, but of course possible.
alyxuk
that would leak out to other governments fairly quickly
and other governments are less.. reliable.. and it'd leak out to the public
Sebastian
Well, if you know that you know more than I, but then you already know there's nothing to worry about.
