Google says "We're sorry ... but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now"
I fear it's the tor exit relay that's to blame
Suggestions as how to fix? Or where the problem really lies?
lays?
arma
arathorn: the problem is that tor has way more users than google expects that ip address to have, so google thinks it's being crawled and defends itself
(heck, it might even be being crawled. there are lots of tor users, and one of them could be crawling google.)
is this your tor relay that you're running? or one that you're popping out of?
katmagic
The new TorButton versions should automatically redirect you.
Try https://ssl.scroogle.org/ .
Arathorn
arma, It's the exit relay I'm running
Google works most of the time, but sometimes it complains
If push comes to shove, I guess I could go back to altavista :)
get some 90's vibes
arma
arathorn: right. the first answer is to put your exit relay on a different ip address than the one you surf from -- if you have a second one.
the second answer is to switch to scroogle, and ignore google.
the third answer is exclude google's ip address from your exit policy
katmagic
Google has like a gazillion IPs.
arma
you say that, but if you exclude 72.14.204.0/24, i bet you'll get most of them
Arathorn
arma, I would love to put my relay on a second IP, but I don't know how. Can one ethernet card get assigned two addresses?
arma
sure.
the question is whether you have two addresses that your isp wants to route to you

Arathorn
I can get assigned ten IP's
arma
linux, i hope?
Arathorn
yes
arma
/sbin/ip addr add 128.31.0.39/24 dev eth0
that's how i add another ip to my computer
Arathorn
nice. and how do I tell tor what IP to use?
katmagic
ORListenAddress
arma
you set orlistenaddress, address, and outboundbindaddress.
you can just set address and outboundbindaddress, and orlistenaddress will bind to all of them, which is fine
Arathorn
arma, should I add outboundbindaddress? I can't find it by default
I feel confused. How can my computer have two IP addresses? If I specify a certain IP for tor to use, how do I know that my own traffic gúse the other IP?
*use
men screw it
I prefer automatic IP assigning
the problems adds up, now I can't connect to certain irc networks that bans tor connected clients
I probably should run a separate server for this cause
arma
arathorn: i bet there are guides somewhere on handling more than one ip address. my computer has three or four. many services bind to 0.0.0.0, meaning 'all of them', and you can configure services to bind to other ones
there's a primary one that all your traffic goes out. /sbin/route will tell you more.
but really, #tor is not going to be the best place to give advice about managing your computer
arathorn: as for 'can't find it by default', the sample torrc file your distribution comes with has very few of the possible lines you can write in your torrc. 'man tor' for more details.
Arathorn
nice
Man, this is frustrating ... I have no idea how to solve this, I don't even know where to start. I would have no problem buying a second computer to run as a tor server. It could also run http, ftp, aswell as mprime and folding@home
that seems like an awesome trouble free solution :)
messing around with all kinds of settings and special solutions is not my cup'o'tea
arma
that's also a fine solution. but you will at some point want to learn how to multi-home a computer. no time like the present. :)
(i guess multi-home is usually more complex, in that it means multiple routes out of the computer. in your case you have only one route, just with more than one ip address)
Arathorn
I will try, but it doesn't seem like a long-term solution. I would ask in #ubuntu, but freenode has banned me for tor use :) Perhaps tomorrow
it's approaching 3AM in sweden ...
I also found a bundle of used rack mounted servers for sale. That got me thinking :)
arma
stockholm, or elsewhere?
Arathorn
piteå :)
arma
hm. near stockholm, or not near stockholm? ;)
Arathorn
about 1000km from stockholm
but there's plenty of fish in the sea. It's the idea that's interesting
arma
ok. i was asking because there are plenty of people in stockholm who could help. but no clue about 1000km away. :)
Arathorn
I am running a server at the moment, but it would be fun to setup something more serious
Well, I live about 100km from stockholm
how do you monitor a rack mounted server ...? Are there monitors, keyboard etc available? Or does it have to be done remotely?
well, I seem to have two IP addresses. One small step for a man ...
still confused, I have never ever heard of this being possible
and I have been into computers since -93 .... what the hell have I been doing
Goldstein
if you have multiple interfaces, you have multiple ips
arma
true, but you can still have one interface and multiple ip'
s

dr|z3d
Or you can have multiple virtual interfaces bridged in to a single ip, those with multiple ips. All is poosible. :)
possible, even.
Goldstein
why?
dr|z3d
Take virtualbox, for example..

benp, thank you
benp
Unfortunately, those do not directly address claws-mail.
Plus, the wiki is not regularly updated.
The error regarding res_send is from when torsocks initializes itself.
Your exact error is reported on the torsocks website at http://code.google.com/p/torsocks/issues/detail?id=3 .
The res_send function is used to do DNS lookups of hostnames.
If your only use of torsocks is for this mail application, you could work around the problem by editing wherever your mail server host is specified to have an IP address instead of the hostname.
To get the hostname using the Tor network, you can use the tor-resolve utility (in the same directory as the main tor executable).
Note that the torify software is a project independent of Tor itself, so, unless there are torify developers quietly hanging out here, we are not experts in supporting it.
Sebastian_
not really
torsocks is
torify is a wrapper that we support.
aldaris
thank for the help

Arathorn
Sebastian_, i see
well, it's settled. I will run a dedicated tor server within the next few weeks
alongside three or four other dedicated servers of different kinds
my wardrobe will become a netbook-based server rack :)
