what would happen, if two hosts were using the exact same keypairs for their hidden services?
would it break anything or would it be kind of like "anycast" :)?
Sebastian_
T_X: whichever hs publishes its key later gets all the traffic
T_X
ah, mkay, thanks. I was just wondering about possiblities to do some anycasting in a hidden tor net to increase the reliability of a service
so that for instance one person (or a couple of friends) owning a couple of servers around the world, all just accessable as a hidden tor service could be accessable over one common onion url. and the tor network would chose a random one of the servers then
and behind the scenes, the servers could just synchronise themselves anonymously via common protocols for that inside the onion-land

How important is it to have privoxy working? I'm using tor both without privoxy (it's installed but not configured) or polipo.
arma
should be fine, if you're happy with how tor is working
firefox's socks support is pretty crappy
monkey_d_luffy
what exactly is the purpose of privoxy? doesn't it do the same than firefox addon adblock plus?
arma
the main purpose of privoxy at this point is to have an http proxy between firefox and tor,
since firefox's socks support sucks.
monkey_d_luffy
mmm... but tor button already takes care of that, right?
arma
for example, firefox blocks during the socks handshake
so it can't do any other network stuff while it waits
also, there's a hard-coded timeout of like 10 seconds for the handshake, so hidden services won't work very well for you

monkey_d_luffy
so using Opera would be a better choice?
OTOH the tor button has the advantage that it blocks malware javascript, while it Opera I would have to disable it alltogether
arma
firefox + torbutton is the only safe browser for tor
you'll find it is more usable if you use an http proxy too. but, that part is up to you.
monkey_d_luffy
ok, so I should try to get privoxy working then. What about polipo, if I have prixovy I don't need polipo, right?
arma
right
though privoxy slows things down more than polipo does
monkey_d_luffy
are you using polipo or privoxy?
arma
i use polipo
monkey_d_luffy
so if polipo is better, why does TOR supports both methods? why not just stick with polipo? considering the fact that the ad filtering can be done with adblock plus
arma
first, it's called Tor, not TOR
second, we support all sorts of things. why decide to not support something when it's easy? :) i guess it depends what you mean by support. i mean 'works with'.
monkey_d_luffy
makes sense :)
will try to get this working with polipo then
you mentioned using a proxy will make hidden services work better, do you mean by that "less latency" when chating on irc? (also have to get that oen working one day :)
arma
no, i mean an increasing chance of actually making your initial hidden service connection
monkey_d_luffy
arma: can you tell me your polipo configuration? I'm configuring it with:
socksParentProxy = localhost:9050
diskCacheRoot = ""
disableLocalInterface = true
"The proxy server is refusing connections" :(
I've configured tor button to use polipo (and the proxy settings automatically get filled with localhost 8118)
When clicked on "test settings" it succeded
If I uncheck the "use polipo" box in torbutton, it works. But how do I know if it's using polipo or not?
Sebastian_
monkey_d_luffy: in that polipo config you pasted, you never actually tell polipo to use port 8118. Maybe you want to add that.
monkey_d_luffy
I was googling for my problem and hit a ubuntu forum message that told to use this config file: https://svn.torproject.org/svn/torbrowser/trunk/build-scripts/config/polipo.conf
it's working now :)
thanks
gamambel
why does tor depend on torsocks|tsocks ?!
arma
gamambel: tor doesn't depend on torsocks / tsocks. it recommends, which your silly package manager interprets as depends. not that you're here anymore, but if anybody else wants to know the answer.

I need some tutorial to get tor running on macos snow leopard, anyone can point me one?

dfasdf455
katmagic, sure, Ive read that, but could not get it working... it seems tor is no installed, but i downloaded it for macos on tor's download page
actually, i downloaded vidalia...
katmagic
Did you double click on the .dmg file and let it mount, browse to the now open Vidalia Bundle in Finder, and simply drag and drop the Vidalia onion icon to the Applications folder?

dfasdf455
year
so, when a click on "start tor" button is says "Vidalia was unable to start Tor. Check your settings to ensure the correct name and location of your Tor executable is specified."
katmagic
Did you start Vidalia by selecting its icon from your Applications folder
dfasdf455
yes
katmagic
Well, that *sounds* bug-like. Not that I know much about OSX...
Oh. You did download the Vidalia Bundle and not just Vidalia, right?
dfasdf455
year, I downloaded "Installation Bundle for Apple OS X" from tor's download page...
is tor supported in mac os snow leopard system?
katmagic
I believe so.
dfasdf455
ok, thanks anyway
phobos
if you go to vidalia, settings
what's the path to tor?
dfasdf455
phobos, only "tor"
phobos
that's full of fail
it should be /Applications/Vidalia.app/Contents/MacOS/tor
did you have vidalia installed before?
dfasdf455
phobos, no i didnt
phobos, it seems it connect now
phobos
the next issue is going to be polipo then
i don't have snow leopard to test with
just 10.3, 10.4, and 10.5
dfasdf455
polipo is the web proxy, right?
phobos
the proxy setting should be
/Applications/Vidalia.app/Contents/MacOS/polipo
and the proxy arguments should be -c /Applications/Vidalia.app/Contents/Resources/polipo.conf
i wonder why this fails on snow leopard
dfasdf455
phobos, great, it is working perfectlly here
phobos
this is vidalia 0.2.9 and tor 0.2.1.26, correct?

arma: unfortunately, you're wrong
the tor package depends on tsocks
Sebastian
not just recommends
arma
really.
why's that?
i guess so torify actually works.
Sebastian
I would guess because torify doesn't work
on the other hand, tsocks leaks dns
so it still doesn't really work safely with tsocks ;)
I asked we*sel if we couldn't split torify into its own package
but that is too much overhead for the packagers
(I didn't want torify and thus tsocks installed for my relay)
arma
yeah, i can see that
Sebastian
So afaik, if you don't enable ubuntu universe, you can't install Tor, because tsocks is in universe.
But I don't use Ubuntu, so I don't know for sure.
arma
maybe our ubuntu maintainer (is that erinn?) should hack the package then
Sebastian
hack the package?
arma
patch, i think is the technical term
Sebastian
And weasel makes our Ubuntu packages, too
arma
yes but he's not our ubuntu maintainer
Sebastian
hah. /me doesn't know the difference.
arma
try calling weasel an ubuntu maintainer sometime, and see what reaction you get
i think the last straw was when they signed him up as the ubuntu maintainer for all the things that he maintains in debian and that they dumped into universe. and didn't tell him or ask him.

ok. I still have no idea how helix can patch a package that got signed by some other guy, but I'm obviously still asleep. Will have another go at being awake later
weasel
how about just ignoring it?
it's not problem.
arma
are there ubuntu users that don't use universe?
weasel
we've seen one come here the other day. after xx years of having it that way
gamambel
our first two nodes are online! now we need to wait for them to pick up traffic and see what's there to optimize until we reach the allotted 39MB/s :-)

hi guys!
are someone who can talk german here in the chatroom?

I'm using openSUSE Linux!
I have installed tor and all needed packages i need for it but iz dosent work!
Opensuse 11.2 KDE 4.4.1 32bit
when i aktivate tor via torbuttom, firefox shows me a message: Can't open the following site:....."
the tortester in the torbuttomsettings says: Cant connect to tor! Does polipo working correctly?"
what can i do?
Sebastian
Valentin: hey. Maybe you didn't configure polipo with the configuration that we recommend?
Or maybe privoxy is running on your system
Valentin
I have configured polipo correctly!
*I think^^*
Sebastian
ps aux | grep polipo
what does that say?
Valentin
privoxy wasnt installed on my system!
(isnt)
root 3375 0.0 0.0 2316 712 pts/3 S+ 14:22 0:00 grep polipo
Sebastian
nothing else?
if so, then polipo isn't running.
Valentin
no, nothing else
Sebastian
try /etc/init.d/polipo start
or however you start services on suse
Valentin
now it shows me another message:
polipo 3538 0.0 0.0 2264 740 ? Ss 14:25 0:00 /usr/bin/polipo -- daemonise=true
root 3552 0.0 0.0 2316 712 pts/3 S+ 14:27 0:00 grep polipo
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root
Sebastian
sounds like polipo is running. Try browsing again.
Valentin
it dosent works!
Sebastian
try "netstat -tlnp | grep 8118"
Valentin
have i to delete all polipo settings and insert yours or have i to delete only that ones where i have yours?
Sebastian
try saying that in German?
Valentin
ok^^
muss ich alle einstellungen löschen oder nur diese von welchen ich auf der website neue bekomme?
can i send you my polipo config file?
Sebastian
Du solltest genau dieses config-file haben, zumindest bis alles geht: https://svn.torproject.org/svn/torbrowser/trunk/build-scripts/config/polipo.conf
danach kannste rumspielen falls dir was nicht passt.
Valentin
so
gut
wie starte ich polipo jetzt neu?
ok...schon passiert
Wenn ich in den torbutten einstellungen auf test klicke kommt das: "Tor proxy test: Lokaler HTTP Proxy ist unerreichbar. Läuft Polipo korrekt?"
mhh...
Sebastian
[14:30] <Sebastian> try "netstat -tlnp | grep 8118"
Valentin
tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:8118 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 4264/polipo
and now?
ouhhhh....I'am so dump! Tor wasnt running! ^^
sorry!
Sebastian
is it working now?
Valentin
Congratulations. You are using Tor.
