Funnyface2
hello, is there a general torifier app that will help me use programs that don't support proxies through tor? I am thinking of something that lets me listen to a local port at say 127.0.0.1:1234, then I configure it to tunnel all connections to port 1234 to a certain address.
so if I tell my client to connect to 127.0.0.1:1234, it will go where I want it to.. if you understand what I mean..
mariposa
Funnyface2: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO perhaps?
Funnyface2
thanks, I will have a read through it soon :P
darrob
Funnyface2: search the wiki for transparent proxy and/or iptables

hey everyone...got a issue: Ubuntu 10.04, tor, polipo, vidalia, firefox, torbutton...
arma
sure. where did you get your debs?
is privoxy running?
SlidingHorn
no privoxy...but just realized i might have compiled an old source...
how do i "decompile?" lol
arma
depends what you mean by that

SlidingHorn
not knowing there were .deb packages available, i downloaded the source from torproject.org
and compiled using ./configure make make install
not sure how to undo that
katmagic
https://www.torproject.org/faq#HowUninstallTor
SlidingHorn
thanks
katmagic
If you installed by source, I'm afraid there is no easy uninstall method. But on the bright side, by default it only installs into /usr/local/ and it should be pretty easy to notice things there.
SlidingHorn
i saw it in there just found an old thread saying i should be able to sudo make uninstall? gonna try that too
sudo make uninstall worked as long as you keep the source files...for the memory banks! :) thanks for your help
katmagic
So if you install from the Ubuntu instructions https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en#ubuntu , things should go smoothly.
Hopefully.
arma
most unix users find tor easier to set up without vidalia
SlidingHorn
i'll come back and let you know afterward
d-b
ah on ubuntu you should have used checkinstall
if you are going to make from source
SlidingHorn
@d-b yeah, saw that -- so it makes its own deb
d-b
pretty much
SlidingHorn
ok...so the deb install went well...now i get the following error after enabling tor in FF and navigating to a page: 502 Disconnected operation and object not in cache
tested settings in the add-on options and it was successful
katmagic
SlidingHorn
that loaded...opened a new tab and attempted google.com and got the 502
katmagic
Attempted google.com?
Oh.
Okay, sorry. I misread.
Uhm, sometimes you get a 502 error. If you try again it usually goes away.
SlidingHorn
refreshed and all...trying other pages too
it appears all of tors site loads though, lol
katmagic
Well, if it won't go away at reload, I've no clue.

Hello, I configured a tor proxy/bridge few days ago and I still can't see any traffic - surely something is not working (I checked tcp ports and I'm able to connect) , any suggestions ?
Runa
n1x0n: does the log say anything interesting?
murb
n1x0n: it might just not be advertised.

n1x0n
just says " Self-testing indicates your ORPort is reachable from the outside. Excellent. Publishing server descriptor." then nothing for a while
let me restart it again
Runa
n1x0n: like murb just said, it might be that your bridge hasn't been advertised yet - meaning that no one knows about it :)
n1x0n
Runa: sorry for my lack of udnerstanding how it works *but* I configured it in the "normal" way to just pass traffic and as a bridge - so I should at least see "normal" traffic right ?
i.e. from other tor nodes (I understand then beiing a bridge is beeing an entry point to tor)
Runa
n1x0n: you are either a normal relay or a bridge, not both
n1x0n
aha hmm I thought I could set it to do both
Runa
n1x0n: if you are a bridge, you will only see traffic once users have learned that your server is acting as a bridge
n1x0n: if you are a normal relay, you should see traffic after a few hours
n1x0n
is there any reason why I can't be both at once ?
I cat start two tor instances I guess on different ports etc
Runa
normal relay's are public, and their IP addresses are published for the world to see
murb
people that need bridges generally need them because normal tor nodes are blocked.
Runa
bridges are private and their IP addresses are published in a different way :)
better explained by murb here (:
n1x0n
right, so there is no technical reason why this is not possible - it just collides with each other
Runa
n1x0n: so, if you have a relay and a bridge on the same IP, and the relay is blocked in china - the bridge will be blocked too
yep :)
n1x0n
makes sense - what's more needed in this case - being a bridge or relay ?
murb
if you're prehared to be an exit that is better.
Runa
both are useful, so it depends on how much traffic you'd like your relay to have
n1x0n
murb: sorry - no way :-)
well I can give around 500kB/s up/down so not much
murb
n1x0n: then becoming a bridge is probably useful.
n1x0n
murb: thanks, re-reading my config file then =]
Runa murb : thanks for help
Runa
np, thanks for running a bridge :)
n1x0n
pleasure!
forgot to mention - main reason why I started thinking about it, was Jacob Appelbaum's talk on Confidence 2010 - good work , very inspiring talk, so good work :-)
Runa
yay, great :)
murb
ah cool so the propaganda works :)
a friend getting busted for running a tor exit encouraged me...
n1x0n
yeah propaganda works ];-> , that's why I'm too scared to run an exit node..
murb
:(
_rtr-
hi there
i want to run a tor server on my dedicated server and have about 500gb / month to share, i have set the limits in torrc but i want to monitor how much traffic is used by time. is there a way to get this data out of tor?
Runa
_rtr-: hm, arm might do this, but I'm not sure: http://www.atagar.com/arm/
murb
_rtr-: see also http://munin-monitoring.org/attachment/wiki/plugin-tor_traffic/tor_traffic
_rtr-
great tthanks alot .. exactly what i was looking for :)
Runa
you're welcome :)

linux

/etc/init.d/tor restart

also, how do you start tor with vidalia? When I start vidalia it indicates that tor is already running
