lllll
in order to mount an sshfs (FUSE) filesystem via tor proxy, would "torify sshfs..." work?
bja
lllll: why don't you try it over two known ips. It should give you a hint over it. Although i don't see why not. since that is a way of torifying ssh
Manny
might leak dns
bja
not if you use the ip
Manny
but yes if you use a hostname like a normal person
bja
lllll: for the sake of correctnes there is a use_with_tor or similar command that you should use whenever you are using ssh. But then again ymmv and you might not need it at all since there is tor-resolve to do the ip resolving
lllll
i remember reading somewhere that with the latest versions of torify and tor, it is safe to use the hostname without using tor-resolve to resolve it. is this wrong?
oh, that's right torify doesn't handle DNS right?
bja
I don't know the details. But better be safe than sorry :)
Manny
lllll: one way to test is to unset your local DNS resolver. If whatever you do still works, then it must be using tor

lllll
how do i unset the local DNS resolver?
Manny
what OS?
generally wherever you set your dns server, set it to blank
lllll
on *NIX, would this be /etc/hosts?
Manny
resolv.conf
but if you use DHCP, i'm not sure how to tell it to leave resolv.conf alone
bja
kill `pidof dhclient`
Manny
wont that kill dhcp?
you wanna just kil the resolver
bja
Manny: ...
katmagic
Manny: Make resolv.conf -w.
bja
one of the things dhclient automagically does is set the /etc/resolv.conf file for the local dns server. if you overwrite the resolv.conf file by hand it will be rewritten by dhclient once a few seconds are past
Manny
yes i know
bja
katmagic: you got me on that zsh: command not found: Make
Manny
which is why i didn't suggest just overwriting it
this is more easily dealth with in win
i would kill named maybe
naw, nevermind
bja
Manny: no need to kill named, as long as you kill dhclient and then rewrite the resolv.conf there should be no way to do name resolution at all. then to fix things back up you just need to restart dhclient with the proper interface and voilá tut et bien aussi

helix
phobos: please build&push the website when you get a chance
phobos
doing
helix
thanks
phobos
helix: have you tried building anything win32 yet?
helix
no, you didn't send me the cds yet
phobos
there are no cd's
i sent you an encrypted email with the details

helix
we have been over this a couple of times. I need the winxp cds so I can use the upgrade dvds
oh? I don't seem to have it
when did you send it?
phobos
forget the upgrade dvd's
they're for suckers apparently
alternatively, doing everything in winxp may also be for suckers
helix
can you resend the email then? I don't have it
katmagic
Upgrade DVDs?
phobos
microsoft donated win7 dvd's to us
turns out, you need to sign your current, future, and other dimensional lives away to get the activation keys
and they are upgrade dvds
not full versions
katmagic
Microsoft donated Win7 DVDs? Why?
helix
to show us they are charitable and magnanimous
Manny
if they wanted to do that they should have donated snow leopard DVDs
katmagic
lol. They wouldn't run without a Mac anyway, though.
phobos
actually, they donated it because someone who works there asked if we need current OSes
and rather than buy them, we got these
Manny
XP is a current OS
phobos
win7 is the new hotness at msft
nickm
(Action) could use a win7 installation if we have enough licenses
phobos
we have zero licenses
nickm
ahhh.
(Action) should have read the backlog
arma
so we got the wrong thing from our generous human?
nickm
actually, I think I might have a vista disk somewhere, for some reason.
Manny
does anything work on Vista/Win7 but not XP SP3?
nickm
but best to clear up the situation before we dig any deeper
phobos
we got win7 upgrade dvds
in order to actually do anything with them we'd have to 1) have XP or vista installed already 2) agree to hideous legalese that restricts what we can do with the results
#2 is what gets us the activation codes
helix
did we try registering as Th3 T0r Pr0j3ct
phobos
#2 also requires siging up with msft passport, getting some sort of universal ID
and pouring through gobs of legalese
and then there is some msdn dev agreement
vs. just using the winxp cd's we actually own and bought with cash
helix

Manny
btw did anyone followup with tor lawyers re: recommending i2p for filesharing?
phobos
it's more than just a legal thing
i don't want to recommend anything until we've analyzed it
Manny
i understand that, but since that was one issue, dealing with that would be progress
if they ever show up here on irc, lemme know their nick and I'll talk with them

hey guys, is there an addon for firefox that will pretend to be a mobile device? the mobile web is a bit lighter weight I'd think
Manny
is changing your useragent what you want?
arma
interesting idea. how does your mobile device pretend to be a mobile device? does your mobile carrier rewrite url's to fetch the mobile version of the facebook page, etc? or does facebook look at user-agent like manny suggests?
e.g. m.google.com

jst go to addons and search for user agent
bear in mind that sites theoretically could use javascript to double check whether you're spoofing
i doubt many would care though
arma
you may need to go to torbutton preferences -> security settings -> headers and unclick 'set user agent for tor usage'
but see also https://www.torproject.org/torbutton/design/#id2980042
