rtyler
greetings! I'm wondering if there's a reasonable means for me to avoid certain "bad" exit nodes that attempt SSL man-in-the-middle attacks?
phobos
such as?
rtyler
I was playing around with tor last night, giving it a whirl along with polipo locally, noticed that amazon was being hijacked as well as another site (forgot)
phobos
did you track the exit node?
katmagic
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6415
rtyler
bugger, I'll have to use Firefox for this :(
phobos
well, vidalia will tell you the path at the time
katmagic
TorButton is pretty much a necessity for anonymity, and it's Firefox-only, unfortunately.

rtyler
any decent tor applications for Linux?
katmagic
What do you mean by Tor application?
rtyler
similar to torbutton, but not within firefox :)
phobos
https://www.torproject.org/download-unix
katmagic
There's nothing that offers equivalent functionality, no.
rtyler
slightly unrelated question, I'm presuming operating an exit node is a stupid idea within the US, but a relay should be safe?
phobos
why the presumption?
in fact, the US is probably the best place to run an exit node
rtyler
phobos: my country has a habit of shoot-first-ask-questions-later with regards to things like child porn and internet traffic
tor doesn't have the best reputation in that regard :P
phobos
these are rumors, not facts
rtyler
fair enough, FUD is always fun :)
phobos
email is for terrorists and spammers
twitter is for idiots
facebook is for old people to show pics of their grandkids
rtyler
as a terrorist and a twitter user, I can affirm these statements ;)

rtyler: as the EU and other countries start passing even crazier laws, the first amendment is looking nicer and nicer.
ric8670
what laws is the EU passing?
phobos
implementing censorship to stop gambling or child porn
denmark, sweden, belgium, france, UK, poland, spain, etc
rtyler
I have an extra less-powerful machine sitting in a colo facility in NJ (just moved two in to St Louis to replace it)
ric8670
good luck to them...
rtyler
debating whether I love tor enough ;)
to justify the cost that is
phobos
well
run a non-exit relay as a test
you can configure how much bandwidth tor uses
either by kbps or total transit
https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tips-running-exit-node-minimal-harassment
or do that for an exit node
ha, most of the links in that article point to the old wiki
oops

can someone update wikipedia Tor page? it's still listing 0.2.1.25 as stable version
(reason I can't do it right now is that they blocked all dedicated servers of my provider...)

the tor homepage and news page also seems to need updating since they both list 0.2.1.25 as the latest stable version

Hello everyone. I've a problem during compiling Tor 0.2.2.13-alpha. Output of make says; "/tor/src/or/main.c:1806: undefined reference to `event_new'
./libtor.a(main.o): In function `connection_add':"
Any suggest?
Sebastian_
ilter1: are you using the release tarball?
or a version from git?
ilter1
Sebastian_: Hello. From git ..
Sebastian_: By "git clone git://git.torproject.org/git/tor.git"
Sebastian_
what does "git rev-list --all | head -n 1" give you?

SwissTorExit
hi ilter1, Sebastian_ and everyone
ilter1
Sebastian_: Last day i removed tor 0.2.1.26 by apt-get remove command. Now i want to compile from source codes.
Hello SwissTorExit
Sebastian_: I compiled libevent-2.0.5-beta from it's source codes.
nsa
or: ioerror committed revision 22406 (/projects/android/trunk/Orbot/res/layout): url correction
Sebastian_
ilter1: hm. Maybe libevent 2.0.5 has a bug, but I'm not sure. Please file a Tor bug for now.
ilter1
Sebastian_: All outputs of configure and make for compiling Tor here; http://pastebin.com/mMe69eJ0
Sebastian_: Could you check it please?
SwissTorExit
i run the last git beta 2.0.5 libevent and work fine for me , on same distro , strange
ilter1
SwissTorExit: So could also you check outputs please?
SwissTorExit
try "make clean"

i have see this outpout early but it was a conflict btw my old libevent version
ilter1
I tried make clean. Now i run make again ..
Sebastian_
ilter1: sorry, I'm kinda busy. Looks like you have competent help with SwissTorExit :)
SwissTorExit
i learn from good teacher named Sebastian_ ^^
ilter1
Sebastian_: Ok no problem.
:)
Did you notice output of configure? It says; "checking for libevent directory... (system)"
Maybe i need to show directory of libevent explicitly, ha?
SwissTorExit
oh but i was thinking again that you compiled libevent, not Tor lol

yeah you must put the command i give you yesterday
ilter1
SwissTorExit: Sorry.. could you say it again please?
SwissTorExit
./configure --with-libevent-dir=/usr/local/lib/
ilter1
Hmm .. I think that my system still looks libevent which installed before by apt-get libevent-dev.
I've just removed it by apt-get remove libevent-dev now. I'm trying again ..
SwissTorExit
you must be sure that all old libevent library are uninstallled
:P
good luck
ilter1
SwissTorExit: Thank you for your concern. I'll try it and let you know the result. Now i must go.
SwissTorExit
okydoky, cya soon :D

Hello SwissTorExit, phobos and everyone. While i'm configuring source codes of Tor, it gives this error; "configure: error: Found linkable libevent in /home/ilter/TOR/libevent/libevent-2.0.5-beta/, but it does not seem to run, even with -R." Could you help me to compile source codes of Tor?
Obviously i've problem with libevent but i don't know how to fix it..
SwissTorExit: I tried command which you suggest (./configure --with-libevent-dir=/home/ilter/TOR/libevent/libevent-2.0.5-beta/) but it gives error which i wrote. Do you have another suggest?
SwissTorExit
no, only with the link i give you, not with so much argument ilter
just copy paste the one i give you befor without adding or edit anything,, i dunno where you see all that thing lol
ilter
SwissTorExit: Yes i did as you told.
SwissTorExit
why that : /home/ilter/TOR/libevent/libevent-2.0.5-beta ?
ilter
Yes because it's my libevent directory.
SwissTorExit
i told you to copy paste the one yesterday if you installed libevent from git
if it the case, just copy paste my command, that's all
ilter
SwissTorExit: Is that this one?; ./configure --with-libevent-dir=/usr/local/lib/

or: I think this is a duplicate of bug #531 ?
SwissTorExit
yeah
just to have installed libevent previously , that's all
ilter
Sorry i didn't think that my libevent directory is /usr/local/lib/. Beacuse i compiled (make) libevent under /home/ilter/TOR/libevent/libevent-2.0.5-beta directory.
SwissTorExit
well it don't want your directory, it want a few specific library, try one time if you want help, so far you just be with errors, so will more easy as trying different as i told, or i will be not able to help you
ilter
SwissTorExit: Yeah it works now .. Thank you a lot! Sorry i asked it in detail because also i'm trying to understand how the commands run. For example i didn't know when i compile source codes in Linux, it throws some file in some specific folder like /usr/local/lib/ .
SwissTorExit
well because it will hard to explain all for me, so better accept my help if you ask and not do other lol, i am happy for you ;) i know it worked
but i must say that it was the headache for me at first, i don't understanded too, now that's come slowly
swissknife
for libevent go to the source dir of libevent and look at the output from: ./configure --help
ilter
SwissTorExit: Yes sometimes it's so hard but with your supports it's getting easier. Thanks for your patience.
SwissTorExit
you are welcome :P
ilter
swissknife: Thank you. As you told that command says that; "By default, `make install' will install all the files in `/usr/local/bin' .."
swissknife
ilter: do the same in your Tor source dir..
ilter
swissknife: Yes it says same also. So it seems that when run 'make install', it installs the files under /usr/local/bin as a common behaviour.
swissknife
ilter: if you want to change this for the libevent dir (as you did allready) run: ./configure --with-libevent-dir=/usr/local/lib
so all settings can be pruned to your needs..
ilter
swissknife: What about only 'make' command? Does it install the files under folder which you run make? Or does it install the files under /usr/local/lib by default like 'make install'?
