In any event, this discussion is now in #nottor turf. Please continue there. Thanks.

Doing a tor controller interface in a web language is a bit of a challenge
you'd need a persistent connection and a daemon

Are sites in languages of countries with restictive net policies that mirror or-talk sensitive information?
I should say, the location of those sites.
And if not, would people here like to know one?

I got no comments or any reaction, so i psot again a patchset to harden tor-0.2.2.13-alpha. Read the comments at the top and
look at the bottum for comments. http://paste.debian.net/73780/
Sebastian
I commented that the tradeoffs for country selection aren't known
not sure what kind of other comments you want
It is clear imo that the patch isn't ready to go into Tor
OFFShare
Sebastian: aha, yes but i did not understand what you mean?
Sebastian: what are your points to rekect it?
Sebastian
You're restricting the set of allowed routes dramatically if you flat out reject a route with two hops in the same country.
That means an adversary that can place to nodes in two different jurisdictions has a huge advantage
also, relying on geoip data means we need a) geoip data for everyone b) very accurate geoip data. We're opening people up to attack if the geoip data we ship is tampered with
OFFShare
where is there a diffenrence to the situation we have now? if you get a path like gb->gb->gb ? is it not better to have disticnt nodes all the path ?
geoip must be current. and the shipped version in the source are really very old. No one updates them.
Sebastian
It must not only be current, but it must be accurate.
messing with the db would allow for very subtle attacks
OFFShare
current and accurate. But not from 2009 as in the sorce..
Sebastian: way is there a problem to grep a new geoip and use it? Its sold if you like, and so even the free one is a lot better than the 2009 in the source.
Sebastian
We're planning to include the new update in the next version, I think. karsten would know more.
But that doesn't solve the attack at all.

katmagic1
maint-0.2.1 includes the new database.
OFFShare
oh, what a surprise...
Sebastian
OFFShare: I'm not sure what you're getting at.
Also, path selection is more subtle than you think
just because you exclude some paths doesn't mean the traffic won't pass the very same router 4 times
OFFShare
May be, but look at the logs, not that scrubbed logs you get normally, the clear path a user needs to see if he likes.
But, i am not pushing my patches, i am pushing to do something to solev known problems..

A user tries to choose a specific extitnode, and what does he get? a random one.

OFFShare: StrictNodes 1

haha :)
ok, silencium..

I found a website in a language of a net-restrictive country that mirrors the or-dev list.
It was very easy to find, but are things like that supposed to be kept quiet?
Sebastian
lk: feel free to share, I think
OFFShare: We know there are bugs. There's currently a proposal about it.
lk
Sebastian: Would you like to know it, or would people on this channel like to know it?
Sebastian
lk: probably

This may be well-known already: http://groups.google.com/group/cntor/topics?start=
brizly
hello. how do i check/change the amount of hops / onions-rings my tor-client is using?
phobos
it always uses 3 or more
if you have vidalia, look at the network map
brizly
what is vidalia? i use fedora 12, tor+privoxy, if that matters
bja
vidalia is the nice gui for tor
brizly
k, just googled it :-)
as i understand i can view the state of tor, start and stop it. but how do i _change_ the mentioned hop-count (or whatever the name of that option is). i can't find it in the manpage
tried vidalia, but no way found to configure the 'hop-count'. any idea where i can find it?
phobos
you cannot change the hop count in tor
https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#Youshouldletpeoplechoosetheirpathlength.
brizly
i read about it, the higher the hopcount, the more anonymous is it for me.
good to know that it is called 'path length'. thanks alot for the information.
and good to know the _reasons_ for having 3 'hops'.
katmagic
(Action) wonders if there should be an option for having unpredictable path lengths.
brizly
but the higher the path length, the higher the load in the network. as mentioned in the link someone should write a research paper :-)
OFFShare
katmagic: as long as you get a path gb->hop1-> hop-n -> gb exit, it does not matter. this is the problem...
so entr and exit are controlled by the same rurisdiction.
