SwissTorExit
non still the same : git checkout and it give me M configure.in
can it be while Tor running ?
Sebastian
that's not the problem
try "git reset --hard HEAD"
SwissTorExit
ok
yeah, it worked my friend, it merged ioerror commit and after i was able to merge, big thanks Seb :D
i don't have updated since the first test, so i will so the checksec too, brb
lllll
how come some distributions do not package tor with the torify command?
Sebastian
torify requires additional software
Adding a dependency for them might not be considered a good thing, especially because torify isn't used that much
SwissTorExit
ioerror: hello, for info, it still good working as hardened, all flag still
Sebastian: have you a few minutes ? libevent are impossible to compile :/
Sebastian
if you're quick
about to go to sleep
SwissTorExit
yep,
http://tor.pastebin.com/AG2FEndh
well go sleeping Seb, i will open a bug report and take your rest :P
it's a bit wired but i am able to start Tor , so it can wait :P
Sebastian
hrm
libevent master compiles for me just fine.

lllll
so, in a distro that packges tor w/o torify, how do I add torify?
what dependency would I need to satisfy?
Sebastian
torsocks
then torify is just a script that you can fetch from git
https://gitweb.torproject.org//tor.git?a=blob;f=contrib/torify.in;hb=HEAD
lllll
what if torsocks is also not an available package?
ioerror
SwissTorExit: thank you
SwissTorExit
maybe you think that i need try to use a new repo ? i know that we have do some tricks realy, ok i try seb
you are welcome :D
Sebastian
lllll: I think torsocks is just another script. You can try to fetch it from googlecode or whatever
ioerror
torsocks is not a script
it's a binary program that links againsts libtorsocks
it fails closed, rather than open for many things
it attempts to do ldpreloading like tsocks but expands to plug leaks
it also is audited to work with some other software, so you can know if it's leaky at the start
Sebastian
ah, thanks for the clarification wrt binary
ioerror
it's useful
tsocks is unsafe
torsocks is mostly safe
everything that isn't done by the kernel is unsafe to some degree
that is, if it's not transparent, it may fail
lllll
so i'm assuming tsocks is not the same thing as torsocks?
Sebastian
correct
tsocks is inferior
ioerror
oh you germans ;-)
tsocks is just fine for socks stuff
torsocks is designed for anonymity and use with Tor
Sebastian
tsocks can leak
SwissTorExit
well Seb, with a Fresh repo, it do the same errors :/
Sebastian
which makes it non-fine for use with Tor ;p
ioerror
yes, tsocks can leak
sadly, most programs can leak if they're non-standard
those programs work by doing something called 'overloading'
Sebastian
SwissTorExit: hrm, interesting.
ioerror
so they find a function, say gethostbyname() and they overload the original std c library function
Sebastian
SwissTorExit: it seems the build failure is in the regression tests
ioerror
so for example
unsigned int
sleep(unsigned int s)
{
funcptr realsleep;
realsleep = find_func("sleep");
log_overloaded("sleep");
return (realsleep(s));
}

SwissTorExit
yes, i try without low -level
ioerror
that means that when developers write software, say like skype or something, they may implement something totally differently
Sebastian
SwissTorExit: can you try this, please
ioerror
and torsocks won't overload it
and it will leak
Sebastian
git revert 33bbbed9dde90b68d3bf88dca1f21b557425db4b
and try to build again?
SwissTorExit
well not the same error but still impossible to build
Sebastian
what's the new error?
koryk_
okay, what if we take this famous painting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Magritte_TheSonOfMan.jpg replace the apple with an onion and call it "A photo of Bob" by Alice
SwissTorExit
without the low-level flag i get: http://tor.pastebin.com/C63jBw30 and with revert it was no change
ioerror
koryk_: i can make a photo
SwissTorExit
i run a 64 bits OS if that's can help you to found what's up
ioerror
koryk_: if you want, i can stage a photo
Sebastian
SwissTorExit: lowlevel flag?
koryk_
ioerror: hahah I would love to see that
ioerror
koryk_: what is it for?
koryk_
fun
SwissTorExit
CFLAGS=-DUSE_DEBUG
koryk_
I was thinking of making a screen print
and/or stencil
lllll
so just to make sure, is torsocks the only other dependency for torify? I'm asking b/c i'm considering building it from source (if that would be the only thing I would have to build)
koryk_
ioerror: just thought it would be a funny spoof,
lllll
does torsocks have dependencies on other libs/apps?
ioerror
lllll: just build it from source
SwissTorExit
sorry seb, CFLAGS .., it was the first report and my secound as default
ioerror
koryk_: email me about it and I'll totally work on that idea with you
koryk_: i can stage a photoshoot and hire a model, etc
Sebastian
SwissTorExit: hrm ok, too tired to patch libevent. File a bug?
koryk_
ioerror: hahaha awesome
SwissTorExit
yes sure my friend, i report it :D, thanks and have a good rest :P
Sebastian: i have forget , i don't see anymore the kernel warning
ioerror
koryk_: actually, i have a great idea
Katy
Hi! Is it save to have a firefox profile for tor and using two instances of FF at the same time? Can't find any information in the docs/wiki.
dr|z3d
Katy: Sure it's possible.
You'd want to run the second instance as follows: firefox -no-remote -P
Katy
yeah, possible - but save?
dr|z3d
And specify a different profile from the first, obviously.
If you specify a shortcut/alias, you can name the profile with -P <profilename>
Katy
Are the profiles separated properly?
dr|z3d
You can't run the same profile twice at the same time, so yes, they're totally separated.
Katy
Sounds good.

hi
I am using torbotton, and I am having trouble to download pdfs
it tels me to save as, but sometimes saveas don't save anything from the google lists
arma
try right-clicking on them and downloading, rather than clicking on them and hoping your pdf reader will kick in

brokenx
Hey!
is it true that people use tor as client-only and don't bother acting as a relay?
dr|z3d
brokenx: Sure. Not everyone can run as a relay.
There are probably around 2000 relays, and 20,000+ users..
brokenx
cool glad to know now. what is a good irc client that supports tor
*Tor
dr|z3d
Any that have socks support.
(which is most of them)
brokenx
currently i use chatzilla, and i don't think it supports socks.
im on linux, and i hate xchat :(
dr|z3d
Well, chatzilla takes its settings from Firefox..
So if you nominate a socks proxy in Firefox, chatzilla should use it.
Give weechat a go.. I hear it's good :)
bja
cough cough irssi cough
dr|z3d
irssi isn't much different than xchat.
At least, from the perspective of someone that hates xchat :)
brokenx
i mildly dislike it
i suddely became a little less lazy
and i can tamper with xchat to make me like it
bja
afaik xchat is gnome oriented, not cli
dr|z3d
Both require X; I don't see a huge difference, bja.
brokenx
^agreed
i can telnet to irc :p
bja
irssi is cli it is not xdependant
brokenx
i now like xchat
dr|z3d
(Action) chuckles.
(Action) reboots brain.
Ganneff
there is xirssi/tirssi to pop a gui on top of it. not entirely stable.
dr|z3d
I've heard good things about weechat, so I just installed it. And oddly, it's invisible. Can't see it on the menus, can't locate it.
