katoda
currently Tor has fixed-length OR routing?
Manny
huh?
i think it generally uses 3 hops
not sure if that is a define or a minimum
phobos
tor currently uses a minimum of 3 nodes per circuit
Manny
phobos: so it is not set to use exactly 3
by default
katoda
it shouldn't be fixed
fixed length
phobos
it's 3 or more
generally, 3
TJ
it's my first try on exit nodes.which one suits best debian centos ubuntu fedora?
katmagic
CentOS
TJ
do we have enough docs for centos i can read?

Manny
tor works the same on all
katmagic
It's quite consistent.
CentOS is just generally regarded as a pretty stable OS.
It's really just a personal preference, though.
You'll want to make sure you upgrade, too.

data
hey, for some reason i don't get any traffic on my relay anymore. 'CompSciR0x 6598FCA0B3ADF12DD6B11838812BDCC81C293852'
it's been about a day since I fixed it
(that was the one with the shifting clock)
Sebastian
yeah you're not in the consensus
wtf
data
hmm, the server is running
restarted it now
mikeperry
alrighty
I think that I've got a torbutton 1.2.5 release candidate ready
can some brave souls please test it?
https://ides.fscked.org/transient/torbutton-1.2.5pre11.xpi
dr|z3d: yes, it probably still won't work on minefield :)
Sebastian
what kind of tests are you looking for?
it doesn't blow up my browser yet
Runa
mikeperry: yay
Sebastian
automatic 403 redirection works
mikeperry
it has fixes for the 'urgent' bugs in: https://bugs.torproject.org/flyspray/index.php?order=pri&project=5&tasks=all&type=1&sev=&dev=&cat=&status=&due=&string=&perpage=20&pagenum=0&sort=desc&order2=&sort2=desc
well, all but a couple I either couldn't reproduce, or seemed like firefox issues
dr|z3d
mikeperry: Would you like me to test nonetheless? :)
mikeperry
actually, the FTP issue was the only firefox one. the rest should be good
data
4Apr 07 11:37:22.811 [notice] Self-testing indicates your ORPort is reachable from the outside. Excellent. Publishing server descriptor.
mikeperry
dr|z3d: sure
Runa
data: yep, so everything is good
data
Runa: well, that's what it said last time

Sebastian
data: right
data
where can I check if it is really published?
Runa
data: you're setting up a relay?
Sebastian
We need a karsten or another authority operator for that
data
well, i have been running one for quite some time
karsten
we need to finally give this Sebastian guy access to the descriptors.
dr|z3d
Sounds terminal, karsten!
(Action) winks.
karsten
dr|z3d: heh. nah, it's already under way. this Sebastian guy just doesn't have patience. ;)
also, how can i help in the meantime?
Sebastian
see what's up with CompSciR0x 6598FCA0B3ADF12DD6B11838812BDCC81C293852
it publishces a descriptor but falls out of the network
Manny
mikeperry: do you think you handle screen resolution thoroughly enough?
dr|z3d
mikeperry: Ok, expected behavior with Minefield.. lost bookmarks..
Manny
size I mean
mikeperry
I think we had this discussion already. you suggested having an option to fix the resolution at 800x600, didn't you?
that's a good idea, and I created a feature request for it, but I didn't have time to get that into this release
Manny
i wasnt aware i had the discussion with you though
ok, thx
karsten
Sebastian: it's contained in 7 votes for the past 10 hours.
Sebastian: but not as Running it seems.
Sebastian
That can mean many things
karsten
nobody votes for it as running.
Sebastian
so what is the 7/10 figure? You mean 7/10 times a majority of authorities voted for it?
karsten
contained in 7 votes every hour.
but not as Running.
Sebastian
ah.
karsten
which means it won't get into the consensus anyway.
Sebastian
so 7 out of 7 authorities vote for it?
as non-running?
karsten
not sure how many authorities we have right now.
with legacy stuff.
Sebastian
should be 7
ah
legacy stuff needs to diaf
karsten
nah
Sebastian
in any case
legacy votes shouldn't count for the consensus I guess
karsten
let me look at its descriptor..
(Action) likes mysteries
published 2010-04-06 10:20:14
is the last published descriptor i can see.
what does the log say?
Sebastian
[11:40] <data> 4Apr 07 11:37:22.811 [notice] Self-testing indicates your ORPort is reachable from the outside. Excellent. Publishing server descriptor.
karsten
ah, that might be too new.
Sebastian
ok, so that was when data restarted the node
karsten
but anyway, the time between apr 6 10am and apr 7 11:37 is too long.
which would explain why the node fell off.
Sebastian
and no new publication inbetween?
karsten
doesn't seem so.
Sebastian
data: how exactly are you making your relay a relay? What is your setup? Are you putting all the config vars into torrc?
karsten: hrm. that's kind of sad.
what version is that relay?
karsten
platform Tor 0.2.1.22 on Linux x86_64
Sebastian
hm. I don't think we fixed any big bugs inbetween 0.2.1.22 and 0.2.1.25
karsten
hmm, wait.
Sebastian
standing by
karsten
i have more descriptors here. they were just not referenced from the consensus, so that i don't have them in the archives.

Sebastian
oh
you should probably include them in the archives?
karsten
i can't.
Sebastian
Because that will help us debug more
ugh
that's unfortunate
karsten
unless i use gabelmoo's cached-* files. hrmmmmm
Sebastian
right. I think those should be public, anyways
karsten
ok, i take that back.
i could. :)
Sebastian
This is also a potential problem for exonerator
karsten
no
Sebastian
Why not
karsten
clients don't know about these descriptors.
Sebastian
hah
karsten
i'm running a client to get the descriptors.
Sebastian
I have a descriptor for data's node.
it's old, but still
karsten
these are only known to the authorities. and maybe only to a subset.
Sebastian
Just because a node is not in the consensus doesn't mean it doesn't work as a Tor relay
it could be that the authorities are marking it down due to a bug
karsten
true, but clients wouldn't be able to learn about that descriptor.
it might work as a relay based on older descriptors.
Sebastian
well, they might well learn the descriptor
when they use something like tortunnel with an ip, and the relay has a dirport open
then it can give them its descriptor
just like a bridge can
karsten
well, speaking about normal tor here, not hacking.
Sebastian
right
but if we're speaking about exploiting Tor relays, then we should consider this.
karsten
yep. it's easy to parse the cached-* files. i already do that for the tor client.
will add that.
Sebastian
ok. But that means we have no historical data, yes?
karsten
only for the past 24 hours (in gabelmoo's cached-*)
Sebastian
ok. ugh.
karsten
this is how we collect descriptors for years now.
Sebastian
I know
I always thought we include all descriptors
karsten
ok, what can we do to solve the mystery at hand?
Sebastian
learn why the authorities think that node is not running
data
if I can help in any way, just tell me
although I will be slow to respond at times
Sebastian
we've noticed :)
it's ok
data
but to answer your question: all config variables are in torrc
karsten
OR and Dir port of that node look okay to me.
i don't have info logs on gabelmoo to tell more.
ok, i need to give up. the node should be in the next consensus in 32 minutes.
Sebastian
hm
ok
karsten
(Action) likes mysteries that can be solved quickly more.
dr|z3d
(Action) recommends Miss Marple to karsten, on that basis :)
karsten
(Action) has tried listening to ??? (die drei fragezeichen), but that hasn't helped so far, either.
"The Three Investigators"
dr|z3d
Wow. My Tor client's gone totally nuts.
murb
"Die drei Fragezeichen"?
dr|z3d
I'm seeing at least 30-40 open circuits here.
Vidalia's painting the world yellow!
Basic log view tells me Tor's encountered an error, and reports it as ""
2.2.10alpha running (win32).
Sebastian
dr|z3d: advanced log output might give an indication what's going on
the basic log "" thing seems to be a vidalia error
dr|z3d
Sebastian: Yeah, I looked.. also increased the buffer there.
It was set quite low, so I missed the initial report.
I think I'm going to restart Tor and see if I can reproduce. Nothing doing at the moment, logwise, though circuit number is remaining high.
njaln
karsten: In the section after Arm, in the reply you sent me, you wrote that you wanted the results in metrics.torproject.org. Which results are you referring to? Those from Arm, or some other results?
karsten
njaln: arm and metrics have different purposes. arm tells you more about your relay/client. the metrics portal tells you more about the network including historical data.
i'm not sure what results there are in arm that might be useful for the metrics portal. but some of arm's data depends on the local view on the network, which may not be available for all relays.
see the metrics website for some examples of results. there are some graphs, there is a data page with possibly more results, and then there's dir-spec.txt which specifies more data we might use for analysis.
and then there's data that we gather ourselves, e.g. by active measurements.
njaln
karsten: kk, thanks
(Action) continues reading the dir-spec
ilter
karsten: Hello. How are you? I haven't find you on irc for some days. I'd like to thank you so much for ernie's guide which you prepared. Finally i finished it. I iimported Feb2010 files from Metrics Portal then i achieved make queries on it.
karsten
ilter: hey, glad to hear. anything else that needs improvement?
(Action) disappears for a few more hours. will read backlog.
ilter
karsten: Now i'm focusing subjects for my thesis but when i need to simulate some parameters, it's probably that i'll need your help.
karsten
ilter: sure. let me know.

you're welcome. :) thanks for testing.

njaln: arm displays client side statistics in a passive manner - having it phone out in *any* way would be horrible (and you'd see quite a parade of tin foil hats here to boot)
dr|z3d
We don't boot tin foil hats, here.. the channel would be empty without them..
(Action) winks.

zdfak
hello
is a Tor relay connecting (establishing a TLS connection) to ALL other ORs in the consensus??
I read "Unfortunately, since Tor currently requires you to be able to connect to all the other Tor relays, we need you to be able to use at least 1024 file descriptors." from https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#VServer and I was wondering whether this is still true.
Runa
zdfak: "to be able to", not that it actually connects to *all* ORs every time

i have my vps now running and i followed this http://www.torproject.org/docs/rpms.html.en
