dandon: I have been using http://www.thesprawl.org/memdump/?entry=8 and google for reference, and for this particular case I don't see any setconf being made.
karsten
kjbbb: hey, congrats!
kjbbb
hey karsten,
thanks!
excellent news, excited for this summer
karsten
glad to hear. :)
kjbbb
haha, im listening to koryk give a presentation right now
he was accepted to tor too
karsten
fun. where's his presentation?
kjbbb
at villanova, its a thesis presentation on genetic algorithms
BarkerJr
why does my hybernating relay not show up in the concensus?
kjbbb
small world i guess

karsten
kjbbb: yes, indeed.
BarkerJr: because it's not running. no need for all the clients to know about it.
BarkerJr
then what's the point of the Hybernating flag?
dandon
monkey_d_luffy: ?
karsten
BarkerJr: you mean the "opt hibernating 1" line in the descriptor your relay publishes?
monkey_d_luffy
dandon: still not working man :'( and this room seems slower paced than a turtle pulling a whale
karsten
it's a way for your relay to tell the authorities that clients shouldn't use it and that your relay shouldn't be included in the consensus.
BarkerJr
I actually was refering to torstatus
dandon
monkey_d_luffy: just need to stick around :)
monkey_d_luffy
yes :)
BarkerJr
it shows Hibernating with a red X next to it
dandon
setconf MapAddress
maybe case sensitive..
nsa
or: ioerror committed revision 22246 (/check/trunk/cgi-bin): IE8 fix from sjmurdoch

i think it's setconf MapAdress=google.com newaddress
BarkerJr
I'm just disturbed that Weather emailed me about it
dandon
not sure though
BarkerJr: ? help?
BarkerJr
it shouldn't email for hybernation
karsten
BarkerJr: to be honest, i don't know how torstatus learns about hibernation. i wouldn't trust torstatus too much. after all, it's based on the v2 protocol.
monkey_d_luffy
dandon: no, it doesn't work that way (I got an error message). Did you check the URL I gave, here it is again: http://www.thesprawl.org/memdump/?entry=8 This is what I've been using as guideline.
dandon
i lost connection earlier
karsten
BarkerJr: is your relay listed on this page? http://metrics.torproject.org/consensus-health.html

BarkerJr
yes
karsten
with the Running flag?
erm, in the blue column, that is.
Sebastian
karsten: I think all that happens is that there is a weather bug
where weather mails operators of relays that are currently hibernating
BarkerJr
yes
karsten
Sebastian: new weather or old weather?
BarkerJr
er no, not running
there's nothing in consensus column
karsten
then it's not in the consensus. does weather know that it's hibernating? might be useful to have any clue how weather works these days..
dandon
hey everybody. what is the correct syntax for setconf mapaddress

karsten
that's the new weather then.
dandon
monkey_d_luffy: setconf mapaddress="www.eurogamer.net www.eurogamer.net.williamhaines.exit"
karsten
BarkerJr: kaner probably knows more about that.
dandon
apparently not
monkey_d_luffy
dandon: I never did see a step-by-step guide on it, but I never saw setconf being used on mapaddress... so I don't think so, but I can be wrong.
I feel that I'm soooo close... but there is something eluding me.
BarkerJr
it seems to me that this consensus-health.html would have easily told us when moria1's ip was wrong

if i restart tor, will it regain sped quickly?
speed
nsa

Sebastian
it should, yeah. As long as you don't stop it for long
data`
(as a relay with 12-14MBit)
yea, just restarting to regain memory and close all the TIME_WAIT connections
Sebastian
0.2.2.13-alpha should have a fix for that
maybe you want to upgrade while you're taking your relay down anyways.
monkey_d_luffy
can anyone help me with mapaddress ?
data`
ah ok
thanks
will do that then
Sebastian
monkey_d_luffy: hm
what doesn't work about it?
monkey_d_luffy
Sebastian: I'm trying to set up a specific exit node for a particular domain, let's say it's google.com. The problem is that when I try to go there with firefox, it gives an error message saying "An external application is needed to handle...."
this was what I did: I telneted with tor, typed my password and typed the command: mapaddress google.com=google.com.TorNickname.exit
The tor node nickname (TorNickname) was obtained with torstatus.kgprog.com by querying the tor node IP.
so what am I doing wrong?
Sebastian
You might need to enable .exit notation in your torrc
also, just try setting the mapaddress stuff in the torrc. That should help track down whether the problem comes from using a controller or not.
Firefox's error message means that it got an unexpected content type. It is of course imaginable that the exit node you picked is broken and serves you crap.
and with that, I sleep a bit. Back tomorrow.
monkey_d_luffy
how do I enable my exit notation in torrc? And what would be the correct approach in setting the nodes in mapaddress, since alias/nicknames are not the best way
Ilistyn
Hi there :)
katmagic
Hi.
Ilistyn
I JUST started using Tor and I'm a little confused about how to configure a specific application to use it. I thought I might see if someone here could give me a hand?
katmagic
What application?
Ilistyn
x-chat IRC
It has a section in the preferences for setting up a proxy server and proxy authentication and all, but I'm not sure what exactly to fill in the blanks with and I don't want to screw it up.
BarkerJr
what do the blanks say? :)
katmagic
https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO/IrcSilc
Ilistyn
Proxy Server Hostname:______ Port:_____ Type:[dropdown arrow] Use proxy for: [dropdown arrow]
awesome, thanks for the link kat :D
Hmm it doesn't appear to be working, if I whois myself on x-chat I show the same ip as I did before altering the proxy settings.
Or am I doing it wrong?
monkey_d_luffy
can anyone help me with mapaddress ?
katmagic
monkey_d_luffy: ttps://gitweb.torproject.org//tor.git?a=blob_plain;f=doc/spec/control-spec.txt;hb=HEAD
Err, https://gitweb.torproject.org//tor.git?a=blob_plain;f=doc/spec/control-spec.txt;hb=HEAD
Be warned, it's pretty dense.
Why do you need to use the controller instead of torrc?
monkey_d_luffy
katmagic: I already read that mapaddress section
katmagic: no particular reason, I guess it just makes it more dynamic, more control. I was using signa NEWNYM already so...
katmagic: have you used mapaddress before?
katmagic
Nope.
(Action) tries out mapaddress.
monkey_d_luffy
katmagic: this was what I done:
I telneted to tor, typed my password and typed the command: mapaddress google.com=google.com.TorNickname.exit
The tor node nickname (TorNickname) was obtained with torstatus.kgprog.com by querying the tor node IP.
when I type the mapaddress command I don't get a "250 OK" reply
*but when
so something is wrong
katmagic
What did you get?
monkey_d_luffy
nothing, it just hangs in there
katmagic
OK. I suspect this is a problem with telnet. Try `nc 127.0.0.1 9051` instead.
Does it give you an answer now?
monkey_d_luffy
katmagic: trying it... but slow
give me 1 sec
katmagic: still doesn' work :( I get the same type of error in firefox (blah blah an external application is needed....)
katmagic
Does Tor give you a reply?
monkey_d_luffy
katmagic: what do you mean?
how can I see that?
katmagic
When you give Tor the MAPADDRESS command, it should give you something like '250 google.com=google.com.exitnode.exit'
monkey_d_luffy
katmagic: yes it did
katmagic: it outputed the exact command I gave it, but with the "250 " prefix
katmagic
OK. So it *should* be working.
monkey_d_luffy
katmagic: are you using firefox with torbutton?
katmagic
Yes.
OK. Authenticate and then send 'MAPADDRESS testingtor.invalid=check.torproject.org'.
monkey_d_luffy
damn it... why doesn't itwork for me :(
ok, will try that
katmagic
Then go to testingtor.invalid in your browser.
monkey_d_luffy
katmagic: it works
katmagic: but I'm not sure if that is what I want
I want to set a specific exit node for a given domain. Not create an alias
maybe I'm missing something
katmagic
Are you sure you're using an exit node that works? Does it work if you go to google.com.exitNode.exit in Firefox?
monkey_d_luffy
katmagic: you mean try google.com.exitNode.exit before adding any mapaddress in tor ?
katmagic
Yes.
Also, have you enabled AllowDotExit?
monkey_d_luffy
that doesn't work for me. And no, I have not enabled it
katmagic
That would be why you can't connect.
Add 'AllowDotExit 1' to your torrc or send 'SETCONF AllowDotExit=1' to the controller to enable it.
(By the way, this introduces a security risk.)
monkey_d_luffy
Failed to parse/validate config: Unknown option 'AllowDotExit'
ok, will try the setconf way
katmagic: 552 Unrecognized option: Unknown option 'AllowDotExit'. Failing.

i dont think its in 0.2.1.x series
monkey_d_luffy
I have tor 0.2.1.25
any work around?
keb
if you check your tor manpage or your Changelog you will see if the option is mentioned
katmagic
.exit notation worked by default before then, didn't it?
Err, in stable, I mean.
monkey_d_luffy
keb: I searched both and couldn't find any "dotexit" mention
keb
yeah it is listed in 0.2.0.30
hmm. in 0.2.1.9 AllowDotExit was created as an option
or not ... checking
monkey_d_luffy
5 AM here... have to sleep... thanks for the help guys, tomorrow is another day
keb
goodnight
i have no clue how to tell in which version a particular option was introduced or removed, except by googling

how would you bisect them

keb: there's this thing called a changelog. we try to be clear there.
katmagic
It was introduced in 3e4379c on Fri Aug 7 19:26:41 2009 -0400.
roscogruen
is this the channel to get help with a tor add-on that i cant' seem to configure correctly?
katmagic
Probably.
What's your problem?
roscogruen
katmagic: i'm still working on the config. i'll try for another 30 min's or so.
Anyone: someone was helping me set up tor but had to go. i'm at step three on this link: https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en#polipo
katmagic
What distro/variant are you using?
roscogruen
mint 8. so pretty much ubuntu
would flashblock or adblock plus not allow tor or polipo to work?
katmagic
So `sudo apt-get install polipo`, then download polipo.conf to your home directory, and run `sudo mv polipo.conf /etc/polipo/`.
They should coexist happily.
(If you're on Ubuntu, the packages *should* set everything up for you automatically.)
roscogruen
yeah. i know. something isn't right.
katmagic
What's not right?
roscogruen
when i toggle the tor button on firefox, i can't get onto anything.
katmagic
What does `ps -C polipo` say?
roscogruen
i'm sorry, i'm quite stupid. what is that? also, i'm back to making sure i got to the part of downloading the polipo.conf file
it's been a weke
week
katmagic
Uhm... Open Applications > Accessories > Terminal and enter 'ps -C polipo' followed by a newline.
roscogruen
k
separate window or is this cool? should i paste output from that?
katmagic
Does you get a listing like '1234 ? polipo' from that?
roscogruen
ah, that moved the polipo.conf file off home directory. that is why i can't find it
yes, apparently the process is that far. and i think that is where i left off one week ago. GREAT!
PID TTY TIME CMD
1528 ? 00:00:00 polipo
katmagic
Yeah. You can use `cp` instead of `mv` if you'd like to copy it.
OK, so Polipo *is* running.
