part of the reason things are sucking is that lots of people turned off their dirport, and now nobody has it on
Maounique
Mao is down ATM
killed by the memory leaks
and cant access it
but it will be up in a few days
arma
ok
Maounique
0.2.2.13-alpha is accessible by turning on the experiemntal repo ?
and what do I need to save so it does not look like new routers when I upgrade ?
except torrc, fo course
arma
boy, our wiki faq is a disaster now that it's in trac
helix: around?
helix
yes
arma
mao: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ and search for 'upgrade'
helix: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ has a bunch of crap sprinkled around it
also looks like none of the internal links work
helix
yeah I was hoping that since it was a wiki people would take it upon themselves to fix the formatting, but I guess that was a little too optimistic
I'll fix it
arma
thanks! let me know if you need any help.

weasel
I find it sad that the conversion tool did not conserve the commit messages
Maounique
that means it will work across OSes ? I mean if I copy keys, because Mao runs on win atm
arma
Maounique: it should. let us know if it does / doesn't.
Maounique
sure
arma
helix: also, did we figure out a way to have the trac2irc bot give us one line rather than 6?
weasel
it didn't say anything all day.
clearly this can't be that important or loud.
helix
arma: not sure, nsa is weasel's homeboy
sylar
what does the yellow boxed items means in the freehaven.net/anonbib ?
Runa
sylar: just that they are interesting. If you were to pick only a few essays to read, out of the whole collection, pick those in the yellow boxes :)
sylar
Aha
Maounique
good night
sylar
what is the most state of the art in anonymization ?
dandon
sylar: you mean browsing?
or file transfer?
dr|z3d
arma: Re dirport, okeydoke.
nsa
or: erinn committed revision 22226 (/torbrowser/trunk): bump tbb to 0.2.2.13-alpha too
helix
TorFAQ sure is a big, unwieldy page
arma: I fixed it up a little, but I have to run and can't finish right now
so I'll finish when I come home
all the rpms are up though and the tbbs will be soon
arma
great. waiting another day or so for phobos and his horses, before announcing
gouki
Were flyspray user accounts migrated to trac?
rudi_s
gouki: AFAIK yes.
sylar
dandon, I don't know, I probably mean something like chaum's mixnet

gouki
rudi_s, indeed :)

Tas
hm with OpenBSD -current, after their libevent upgrade, I get with 0.2.2.13-alpha: "Apr 25 02:53:09.613 [warn] It's a little hard to tell, but you seem to have Libevent 1.4.0-beta header files, whereas you have linked against Libevent 1.4.13-stable. This will probably make Tor crash." but Tor seems to run fine so far
might disappear with the next OS upgrade though
just as info, runs fine
and regarding that or-talk post, my Tor bridge runs fine on FreeBSD 8.0 with OpenSSL 1.0.0 from ports
regarding that OpenBSD log message above, maybe there are old files left, which are unused, but detected by Tor? they just require to delete /usr/include/evdns.h by hand for the upgrade, nothing else: http://www.openbsd.org/faq/current.html#20100421
arma
tas: at this point, i'm entirely confused about what version of openssl *anybody* is running. you can't use a number to describe any of them, anymore.
Tas
hehe yes, it's weird. I'd guess though that the version in ports is quite unaltered
I didn't look at the patches though
"it works" was enough so far for me :-)
I just mentioned that because there was the question about working/not working with 1.0.0 on FreeBSD 8.0 on or-talk
arma
right. perhaps you could answer the thread there?
currently i guess everybody's assuming they shouldn't upgrade
Tas
if it's impoertant, yes. so far I never posed there
posted*
if they don't upgrade and that works, that seems to be fine as well
arma
yep
Tas
and not to forget, Tor is not the only software which needs to work with the OpenSSL version on a system
regarding the libevent log message "probably make Tor crash", it still runs, I'm connected with it here
seems to me as if the detection of Libevent 1.4.0-beta header files may be old, additional files, or so
but I don#t know much about such things unfortunately
arma
sounds plausible
i don't think they were expecting people to upgrade by removing some old files and leaving other old files sitting there.
Tas
when /usr/include/evdns.h was still there. I could restore it from a backup to test. but it's more likely that there's some bug or so in the version I run and it'll be fixed with the next upgrade. I only upgrade the OS every few weeks
err, the start is missing
if I remember correctly, that was still the same when...
and removing the one old file is required, by the developers
leotr
hello! i get "this page is not available at this time, perhaps because you were hitting the site too quickly. " error on livejournal. Livejournal is blocked in my country that's why i'm using tor but i get this error after some clicks on links
... and i don't click too quickly
Runa
leotr: I believe lj is blocking tor
leotr: see http://archives.seul.org/or/talk/Nov-2009/msg00146.html
ilter
ln5: I've just seen your message. Thank you for the link, I'm going to look it.

hello
arma here ?

udo
hello
I have a weird problem
but not for this channel :-)
Runa
udo: just ask your question :)
udo
nono, no tor issue
Runa
ah, you can join #nottor and ask there instead :)
udo
dr|z3d
udo: You can talk about whatever you like, ask whatever you want in #nottor. That's what Runa's telling you. :)
udo
thanks, bye

hi
dandon
sylar: afaik tor is using this type cryptography
(Action) <a rel="nofollow" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mix_network">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mix_network</a>
indeed. " Some anonymous remailers (such as Mixmaster) and onion routing (including Tor) are based on this idea."
based on it..
nextgens
I'm looking for an up-to-date tutorial/summary on how to set up tor properly on linux
possibly with all the paranoia giggles and whistles enabled
any link to suggest?
I was thinking about running my tor browser under a different, chrooted user
erase the browser cache/config every time I spawn it up,
use iptables to restrict networking interractions for that userid (presumably it needs a tor-tunneled dns and socks to tor, nothing else)
does such a script exist? Am I reinventing the wheel here?
kaner
you could simply use a tor browser bundle i guess
there is a tor-in-chroot tutorial https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/TheOnionRouter/TorInChroot
nextgens
in fact I'm not too worried about the daemon itself, I'd like to restrict what the clients have access to, in my case the browser
hmm, torbrowser + qemu would probably do what I'd like
hmm, no in fact it doesn't do it
I need to tell vidalia to connect to another tor instance
nevermind, I'll figure something out
vic20gmr
hello
Runa
hi :)
vic20gmr
ive been lookin on the tor site for an answer to the following question
but i havent had any luck witht hat just yet
duz the "vadalia" bundle enable Tor for all my browsers, or just a supplied firefox?
dr|z3d
Just Firefox.
We recommend you use Firefox and Torbutton to mitigate leaks.
(other browsers won't be afforded the same protection)
vic20gmr
so even if it wasnt less than idea, other browsers wudnt work with it anyway?
(Action) hears crickets
dr|z3d
You can specify other browsers to use polipo/Tor, sure. Manually.
We just don't recommend you do that.
vic20gmr
ya, i wont, mostly cuz its easier [i gess] to just use it the way it is :)
dr|z3d
Easier, and safer.
vic20gmr
yes
uur uk rnt u?
hehe
dr|z3d
Sorry?
vic20gmr
in the u nited k ingdom?
well it duznt matter to me, i just thot id take a stab
dr|z3d
I'm a denizen of the planet. My whereabouts aren't a topic of discussion. :) If they were, they'd be a topic of discussion in #nottor, not here :)
vic20gmr
i meant no offense, just think of myself as a proficient "intuiter"
dr|z3d
Intuit all you like, but please do so in #nottor. :)
vic20gmr
and after i said, i thot " how dumb am i, gessing a persons place in #Tor"
hehe
well, i hope we can just forget my blunder
and thx for help
dr|z3d
Sure thing!
vic20gmr
i just realized u said "#nottor", is that even a real channel?
or just a "place holder"?
Maounique
ral channel
real
vic20gmr
hehe, advocates AGAAINST tor?
Maounique
no, it is for discussions not related to tor
like from where x and y are
it is not antitor, just nottor
vic20gmr
this irc servr isnt just tor "stuff" is it [with the obvious exception of nottor
Maounique
no idea, I came here for advice :) I dont know if they host other channels as well
vic20gmr
i hope u guys let me liv that down soon :\
Maounique
but i think tor-dev is here too
vic20gmr
mm
dr|z3d
vic20gmr: Please /join #nottor for further metadiscussion.
vic20gmr
metadiscussion?
ok, 1 last question, is this # strictly for tech questions only?
dr|z3d
This channel is for questions directly relating to Tor as software. Not for conspiracy theorists, for philosophical discussions. Just about Tor as it pertains to software. So, yes.
vic20gmr
ok
thx for clarifying
im in the "content" tab [in ff], and i dont see the "Disable plugins during Tor usage" box

where do i find this check box?

Maounique
tor button should be in the lower right corner
near clock if you have full screen
phobos
torbutton is a firefox extension
darrob
Maounique: it should be listed as an addon. (i thought it would be easier to direct somebody there than to make them hunt for the various places torbutton might be in the gui)
vic20gmr
wut clock?
ok
can i aquire it thru ff or i need to dl from website?
phobos
