(And I've noticed that a 4-hop circuit can be just about as fast as the earlier 3-hop.)
BarkerJr
are directory mirrors weighted?
if a smaller node opens a dirport, will it get pounded?
arma
weighted.
keb
[notice] Not advertising DirPort (Reason: BandwidthRate under 50KB)
what you mean by smaller
BarkerJr
:)
arma
right, if you're under 50kb, then a single dir request can really ruin your relay
BarkerJr
[notice] Not advertising DirPort (Reason: AccountingMax enabled)
Sebastian_
johnhans_: maybe you can explain exactly what you mean?
BarkerJr
why can an accounting node be a guard and not a directory?

arma
we figure you've got limited bits so let's not waste them on that frivolous directory thing
Sebastian_
because we figure that people who turn on accounting have little traffic
they should use it for anonymity and not directory overhead
and.... I'm laggy.
BarkerJr
I think we've been on a campaign to discourage people from running directory mirrors
keb
what if you want to contribute to overhead but not anonymity circuits
BarkerJr
the doc says that you should not run a mirror unless you can't burn enough bandwidth as just a relay
Sebastian_
keb: run a website mirror
arma
or maybe the better answer is "then change your mind" :)
Sebastian_
hah
keb
that could solve many problems, if we could get people to do that ;)
arma
dear sir, you have drawn the wrong conclusions about what you should be helping with. please be more helpful in the future.
keb
:)
BarkerJr
is it a bad idea to run tor relay on the same server as a web mirror?
Sebastian
I don't think so
johnhans_
Sebastian: well, my hidden service has a tendency to suddenly randomly not be accessible
without anything useful in the logs
Sebastian
johnhans_: quite unsurprising, actually; given how unstable the network has been
johnhans_
right
good to know that it isn't just me then
ilter
mikeperry: What are the base ratios which are mentioned in proposal 161?
SwissTorExit
arma: hi, i read your comment about the network trouble research, i see that a patch are done to have stats of numbers connections, if you are intrested, i will sure help but i am not enough calified to understand how patch it :P
i think have done only once so far such thing and any help will appreciate :P
or maybe you don't need any more to be tested it
well maybe tomorow, time to go sleeping, cya soon
nsa
or: arma committed revision 22221 (/website/trunk/en): provide a pointer for our openssl patch
BarkerJr
can I safely assume that tor will never use anywhere near its max fd in tcp ports?

arma
um?
hasn't there just been a big thread about that?
BarkerJr
if my ulimit is 32678, can I run two tor relays at that on one ip?
arma
fine by me
BarkerJr
k :)
probably shouldn't run more than two, though
arma
the directory authorities will only give you two Running flags per ip
BarkerJr
ouch
arma
so two is good, three not much better
BarkerJr
my virtual server only has 97884 fd system-wide, so I dunno if I would want to run three :)
arma
damn artificial constraints
at least they don't limit you to 6
BarkerJr
ya
does it hurt to restart bridges every day?
I have a cron job setup to restart my bridge and change its port randomly every day to evade filters
misc
well, the user of your bridge have to get a new one ?
BarkerJr
nah, that's what bridge authorities are for
clients lookup ip/port changes with the bridge authority when it changes
that's why bridges with dynamic IPs are good, too
so long as all the user's bridges don't switch IPs or get blocked at the same time :)
xtoaster
morning everyone
is this a known problem ? it seemed that the longer i left tor running without internet connectivity the less likely tor will connect after network is available.
phobos
what happens if you try to use an application that points at tor?
it should retry on request
xtoaster
connection timeout
phobos
there is a backoff mechanism in later tors
xtoaster
since when ?
phobos
so if you're network disappears, it won't keep trying so hard
xtoaster
oh i mean version
uh. my tor start at sys startup
phobos
but does tor log "trying to connect anyway because of application request"
xtoaster
not sure it run as service :-p
but i can see events in nc
phobos
ok
xtoaster
uh.. i see it retried
phobos
i can't find the actual backoff version, but it's in 0.2.1.x
xtoaster
i am on 2.2
oh. does it look odd to you. i can see only 1 remote connection.
but no circ events
i am using tcpview
ok the back logs for orconn report ioerror
what is that :-/
phobos
hmm, don't know
do you have tor logging to a file?
xtoaster
nop since its running as service.
next time i will copy and past the events and save them for you
it looks that tor doesnt plan to make more circuits, thought current circuits failed one by one
tough/tought
phobos
hmm
xtoaster
though
all thumbs :/
haha. getinfo circuit-status seems to activate some thing. i can see circ events now :-D
good remote connection number rise from 1 to 3
looks like my tor just wakeup from a hibernation :-)
keb
if im not having any problems do i really need to upgrade from 0.2.2.11-alpha
will it help the network
hmm never seen this message before Apr 22 19:32:59.029 [warn] Request too large from address '[scrubbed]' to DirPort. Closing.
ilter
mikeperry: ping?
Could someone explain statement "w Bandwidth=21" on cached-consensus file? Is it 21Kbps? And how is it measured?
Camillo
hi, I'm trying to torify gftp following the method 1 from wiki, but when if I set proxy http on port 8118 and then set the protocol selector on http, it doesn't try to connect at all... nothing happen... can you help me? Thank you
ln5
ilter: it's kilobytes per second, see tor/doc/spec/dir-spec.txt
ilter
ln5: Thanks. And how is it measured?
ilf
how do i tell tor to use a new route?
katmagic
ilf: printf "AUTHENTICATE \"$(sudo cat /var/lib/tor/control_auth_cookie)\"\r\nSIGNAL NEWNYM\r\n" | nc 127.0.0.1 9051
Assuming your system uses sudo and your Tor authentication cookie is located at /var/lib/tor/control_auth_cookie, obviously.
ilf
katmagic: can't find a control_auth_cookie anywhere
why is there no $ tor --new-route? just not doe yet or on purpose?
katmagic
There's not yet a CLI to the Tor controller.
The best you can do is use nc and read the spec.
:-)
ilf: Did you open the control port?
ilf
euh, nope :)
sid77
katmagic: nice oneliner :)
katmagic
Add "ControlPort 9051" and "CookieAuthentication 1" to your torrc, then `pkill -HUP -x tor` (with the appropriate privileges)
ilf
katmagic: yeah, i saw
don't really want to open the port, so i guess i'll have to wait for a CLI interface :/
katmagic
A CLI would use the port, too.
You can make it listen on a socket, too, if you like.
ilf
hm
katmagic
ControlSocket instead of ControlPort; you could likely omit authentication safely using that, as well.
In which case it would be something like `printf "AUTHENTICATE \"\"\r\nSIGNAL NEWNYM\r\n" >> /dev/torctrl`
ln5
ilter: i don't know
shahn
it is arbitrary units. The bw authorities measure it by comparing a node's capacity with the capacity of its peers.
ilter
(Action) need to go now and he will be here in few hours
SwissTorExit
hello to everyone, great new trc for Tor :D
just found a bug in the new trac
it look like it use a old database for the accounts, so in my case, when i open it , it send a confirmation about new mail address, by chance my old one was active and i was able to change it again
helix
SwissTorExit: that's just a function of the account management plugin, it asks users to confirm their email addresses
though, hmm
the user list is a few days old
SwissTorExit
yeah i know, but it used my old one address, the one i create the account
helix
interesting
SwissTorExit
but maybe it's a rare case
helix
I sure hope so
SwissTorExit
yeah, i was surprise helix
helix
good to know about though, thank you for reporting it
SwissTorExit
you are welcome, i add in or-dev a answer about it
helix
when I did the conversion, I just used the email_address field from the flyspray db. I wonder why it got an old one. hrm.
SwissTorExit
yeah, quite strange, maybe something with the cookies while see vidalia.trac ? but i don't guess so
helix
nah it's something in the db. even looking at a fresh dump from flyspray I see your old email address.
SwissTorExit
but i must say that it look nice, great woirk :P
helix
thanks :)
SwissTorExit
ah oky :P
another strange thing, the link in trac section wiki, their a link to xenobite.eu but it look wrong, it opne a sub domain who don't exist
the true link are : https://torcheck.xenobite.eu/
the other are in http but strange
helix
SwissTorExit: the wiki is also just a conversion from the old tor wiki on noreply.org
some of the links may be out of date like they were there
SwissTorExit: since you're an authenticated user, you should be able to edit the wiki to fix anything you see that's incorrect. are you able to?
SwissTorExit
i will point though the devs or Tor editor .P
helix
you can edit it yourself though
SwissTorExit
i don't know, i will take a look
helix
I mean, I'm not opposed to fixing it, I'm just letting you know that we're okay with you fixing stuff :)
SwissTorExit
ah yeah, down the page i have a button :P great , i will do
shahn
helix: it sure looks like my new password in flyspray isn't converted to trac.
helix
shahn: funky
how long ago did you reset it?
SwissTorExit
thanks very much helix :D
shahn
maybe you converted the old db again?
helix
no
shahn
I reset it when we talked about it last time
helix
weasel wiped the old db and this one has all the bugs
SwissTorExit
hi shahn
weasel
hm?
helix
shahn: oh I know what happened. I didn't do a new user export, so the user/pw list is from before
like almost a week ago
shahn
ok

or: 0.2.2.x-rc. Also logging a warn seems excessive
shahn
oh wow. This is going to be spammy.
helix
I don't think the bugs should be in here...
I kind of wish we had a whole channel dedicated to bugs/commits
I feel weird writing long commit messages knowing they'll end up spamming #tor
weasel
they won't.
SwissTorExit
oh helix, i don't look right, it's torstat.xenobite.eu and i mean torckeck.xenobite.eu :/ i never see the torstat so far but it's wong anyway, so i can't change it since it's not the same , sorry
weasel
they get cut off after only a few lines.
helix
SwissTorExit: no problem
shahn
I like commits here. Shows people that we're fixing their stuff quickly when they ping us about trivial fixes.
like website stuff
Runa
helix: I agree with you re a channel dedicated to bugs/commits
SwissTorExit
but nice to see that i can if needed, i will try foud this site anyway
Runa
shahn: it can also be quite .. spammy
weasel
also, feel free to ignore nsa here and go to #commits.

(so says recent rumor birds)
Or, even more compelling, a deepsite.
(when you can serve your site from the cloud, and have 10* redundancy so you don't even need to have your server up, everything else looks less than optimal)
