or better leave it as is.

hey guys, don't know if anyone has reported it already, but tor seems effectively blocked in china now - i mean bridge relays stopped working
actually, it is able to connect after a manual a restarts, but the connection lasts only for a moment
arma
interesting. no, there are plenty of people happily using bridges in china, as far as i know.
mpsi
that's how i checked there were others reporting problems with tor on twitter
arma
are you sure your bridges didn't just disappear?
mpsi
it started around midnight (6 hours ago)
i added new bridges, it's the same
maybe it's just me and a bunch of other unlucky people
arma
ok, so the 'unallocated' bridges are not blocked. that means it's not a blocking by protocol.
looks like maybe they blocked the ones we give out by gmail now.
that sucks.
mpsi
i guess the blocking is connected with the parliamentary session ("lianghui") being held now
they have the habit of "tightenning the security" during such events
and not relaxing it afterwards :(
arma
yeah. i wish china would stop having these events. :)
i wrote up a plan a while ago to tolerate this style of blocking much better.
alas, nobody has been working on bridgedb development since then, so nobody implemented my idea.
maybe some developers in china would like to help out. :)
http://archives.seul.org/or/dev/Dec-2009/msg00000.html
we can give out bridge addresses in a much more smart way

shahn
nickm, arma: weasel said he's ok with branch manpage now.
fossiiil
smart?
you call computers smart?
people are smart, not computers
though i respect you very much arma :-)
arma
some computer programs can pretend to be smart people much better than others
in any case, i'm off to food. back later.
fossiiil
enjoy! :-)
....your meal! ;-)

StrangeCharm
is there a nice "onion" logo as a semi-transparent png (or whatnot) that I could use?
the svg and jpg on the wiki are both just the outline of the onion
is there a direct onion anywhere? who made the header?
atagar_work
StrangeCharm: Will the png I sent you do? What exactly are you looking for?
StrangeCharm
atagar, the link you sent works on light backgrounds, but not dark ones - it has transparent edging, but there's still some leftover white alpha garbage around the edge :(
atagar_work, ^
specifically, i want the onion part of that, but with true alpha at the edge
atagar_work
gotcha - good luck (looked for a bit but didn't find one)

does anyone know how to use tor client-wise behind a firewall/router?
that is, without an normal ip address
--- some functions from g--o---o-g--l---e is b--l-o--c--k---e------d in this country
phobos
what ip address is "not normal"?
goodell
If it is just a client, then it should be able to operate seamlessly
phobos
tor works fine behind firewalls
xtoaster
does it started from yesterday ?
echelon
hi, how do i make polipo prevent ipv6-based traffic from being tunneled through tor?
err.. -make
mzer
phobos: by saying some "abnormal" ip address i mean something that looks like "192.168.1.3".
xtoaster
it should be ok. i use tor when i am in univ. it works fine with 10.0.0.10
mzer
xtoaster: yesterday i was in the us with an "open" ip address, and tor worked fine with that.
phobos
echelon: i think you have to compile polipo with the NO_IPV6 define
echelon
ohh

phobos
tor works with any ipv4 address
echelon
thanks :)
phobos
is there a firewall between mzer's tor client and the internet?
xtoaster
if you are in china. i am very sorry to tell you. bj is having the 2 sessions. gfw is tighting the leak ;)
phobos
or even better, what is tor's log file telling you?
mzer
phobos: yes, a wireless router, and maybe a few others that i do not know.
pardon me for intermixing firewall and router, since those terms look the same to me.
xtoaster: thanks for the info.
xtoaster
there is no wireless firewall though ;)
mzer
phobos: please wait a minute --- im posting it.
phobos: http://pastebin.com/uXGjU2me here is the log.
it appears that my tor client just get stuck when attempting a connection to a directory server.
xtoaster: but isnt that you can set up filtering rules at the router --- which serves the function of firewall'ing?
h3h3
wake up
xtoaster
mzer: its a buildin firewall function or simply b/w list, i guess. hm well maybe you can say its wireless :)
h3h3
im relaying
mzer
xtoaster: or even better --- router/firewall with linux :)
h3h3
in exit policies
i chose IRC
so my relay only allows IRC connections?
phobos
is that the only thing checked?
h3h3
y
yes
phobos
then yes
h3h3
but is it secure
so i could the other protocols
phobos
mzer: your version is slightly old, but should still work
mzer: also, how long have you let it run?
mzer
phobos: my tor client ran for around 20 mins earlier this morning with similar results and as for the current one, it should be 13 mins.
phobos
does the internet work otherwise for you?
it seems like something is just blocking tor
normally, use a bridge
mzer
phobos: yes. internet "in general" is working for me.
but i am afraid that access to tor s--o-u---r-c--e/s--i---t--e is not possible here though.
phobos
so tor is being filtered
mzer
i would say something has b--l----o--c------k-e--d that.
xtoaster
well that's a sign
phobos
mzer
phobos: for how long should i wait until it is considered a no-response?
phobos
5 minutes, usually
mzer
phobos: thanks. i will check again 5 mins later.
xtoaster
they should send rst like ours, quik 'n clean :-)
mzer
i am grateful for b--j though since they have not b+l+++o+++c+++k+++e++d this irc :)
xtoaster
haha, irc is under the radar i guess.
mzer
or nowhere on this earth i can seek help.
xtoaster
since most of the netizens only know qq
phobos
you might want to get some bridges
there is a qq/twitter account called toridges that gives them out
or, email bridges@torproject.org
xtoaster
omg. qq accont ;) i believe qq is under full control. or why does it scan users' disk
phobos
we didn't create it, so beware
xtoaster
^^ anyway. better not install qq. qq2009 is just a trojan with lots of eye candies.
mzer
phobos: thats very helpful. i will check with that qq/twitter account on some other channel in Chinese. and i certainly hope that email to that address is not b===l====o=c====k==e==d. btw, it appears that connection to the site you have just given me is marked timed out.
xtoaster: there is webqq though.
echelon
phobos: if i define NO_IPv6, what will happen to the ipv6 when the request is sent to polipo?
mzer
and linux users in general will not install qq at all.
phobos
echelon: your milk goes sour
echelon
what?
phobos
exactly
i don't know really, i haven't tried it
i suspect it just logs an error
mzer
they might have the beta1 version of tencent's qq but that is a much too impaired version to be of any real use --- so it is reasonably to assume that linux user would take that only as a backup.
xtoaster
mzer: silverlight. dont under estimate ms's powerful gear ;)
phobos
xtoaster: did gfw update bridges or just relays for blocking?
echelon
i need torbutton to handle my onioncat traffic as well
xtoaster
i guess it collected alot bridge. and block them when needed ?
phobos
odd
some bridges have been working since sept 25, 2009
others get blocked
and gfw is early
they were doing it every quarter
or maybe that was a coincidence with politically sensitive events
formalist
:o
mzer
xtoaster: with the advent of html5 that will get blown away eventually.
xtoaster
hm maybe it is a good idea to track the surviors. see who is the immortal
phobos
the last 2 events were sept 25 and dec 24
i had bets on march 23
mzer
btw, could anyone send me a complete link that includes latest tor source? i would like to test some recent versions to see if that works --- the official website is unavailable.
of cvs trunk link, if that is accessible here, of course.
phobos
i think you can google/baidu for "tor project mirrors"
gitweb.torproject.org/ is the trunk
http://gitweb.torproject.org//tor.git?a=tree
mzer
phobos: thank you. i will try that. though it is apparant that the trunk is unavailable . . .
or more specifically, "connection reset".
phobos
i blame gfw
xtoaster
great rst is definitely more responsive - its a qulity service. ;)
mzer
yeah, everyone hates that.
mpsi
hello, i reported bridge relays being blocked in china few hours ago, but now everything works as usual
mzer
mpsi: thank you. i will retry my tor client asap.
can anyone confirm that http://tor.cybermirror.org/mirrors.html is canonical?
phobos
it's on the list of official mirrors
mzer
phobos: thanks for the confirmation, and now i am hoping that my version of that site is not some mitm attack.
phobos
check the gpg sig
mzer
phobos: thanks for the reminder.
mpsi
there certainly was some disruption, i saw quite many tweets from alarmed people, but now it's all quiet again, so i assume the censors changed their minds
it's even more surprising - now tor works also without bridge relays!
mzer
im out of time here. thanks for everyone interested in helping me though. i guess i will try again tomorrow morning. everybody have a good one.

hi
just trying to see if it works
am in my vm that exclusively connects through tor
seems to work :-)
just tried check.torproject.org, synaptic and gaim
would be nice if someone could really confirm, I'm not sending my own ip neither here
mete1989
user_
you're connected over tor I think
[09:11:48] * user_ (~user@9YYAAACII.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net) has joined #tor
go to www.myip.nl, there you will see your IP =)
user_
mete1989: thank you
:-)
in an isolated vm, I need not worry about js and java activated in browser telling my true ip, do I?
mete1989
hmmh
what is a isolated vm for you?
user_
one that has no access to host's eth0 or wlan0
aaabbb
how do i install
karmic
mete1989
how you route all traffic to the tor network?
user_
not nat nor brdged, host-only network with virtual network interface where host's tor client listens at
aaabbb: why do you ask that in #tor and not in #ubuntu?
mete1989
I think the you don't need to worry about js and java
user_
it's very easy, aaabbb
linuxiscomplicated
because i want to install tor on linux
mete1989
linuxiscomplicated: have you settet up ubuntu karmic?
linuxiscomplicated
deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org <DISTRIBUTION> main
what is this
deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org karmic main
mete1989
a source for dpkg/apt
you need to put deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org karmic main in /etc/apt/sources.lst
then apt-get update
user_
aaabbb: sudo apt-get install tor
mete1989
and then apt-cache search tor
^^
and then apt-get install <package name>
user_
it's also in standard repos
mete1989
since when user_?
user_
aaabbb: 'sudo apt-get install tor' gets it for you, installs and starts it
