kose: use https://ssl.scroogle.org
kose
why did that work when google and hotmail didnt?
bja
because google and hotmail have a different perception of tos as scroogle
there is a comprehensive list of exit nodes that is available to the general public, if you dislike tor, it makes easier for people to block it
i arraived to a site that after a few pages it managed to "administratively prohibit the acces"
kose
so google and hotmail now block tor in many countries?
bja
kose: you could say that
anvo: do a /whois on you nick if the ip that appears as server matches your current ip is that your ip is still listed as an exit node
Alexandru_Cristei
I am interested about one of the projects proposed on GSoC
to be more precise I am interesated about Orbot
subbie3
does anyone know how to get the torchat thing going,
Im using pidgin atm
dr|z3d
Alexandru_Cristei: Feel free to hang around..
subbie3: What are thye details for Torchat?
subbie3
its the one mentioned on the hidden wiki

Alexandru_Cristei
who can I ask around about the project?
dr|z3d
Alexandru_Cristei: They all appear to be out currently, the mentors anyways.. if you have general questions, though, please do ask them.. we'll do our best to answer!
subbie3: Just the specifics of the service please. ports, protocols, etc. Assume I don'y know anything about TorChat, but plenty about Tor. :)
Alexandru_Cristei: What I can say is that if you're here more often than you're not, you will get noticed :)
Tor tends to like its participants to be somewhat available on IRC 24/7 :)
subbie3: Talk to me in #nottor perhaps, if you feel here's not the right place.
Alexandru_Cristei
so what's the mentors timezone?
dr|z3d
Alexandru_Cristei: Oh, some in Europe, some in US.
Anyone in particular you were thinking of, or any project/idea you had in mind?
Alexandru_Cristei
Orbot
dr|z3d
Oh, you said, silly me.
Alexandru_Cristei
the one on Android
dr|z3d
And who's heading up that project, remind me..
subbie3
dr|z3d: #nottor dosn't work
Alexandru_Cristei
Bruce or Nathan
dr|z3d
subbie3: It most certainly does. :)
Alexandru_Cristei: Well, Nate is n8fr8 on here, not 100% sure who Bruce is :)
subbie3
dr|z3d: I put #nottor into the activating cloak, and I have a message saying "user not logged on"
dr|z3d
Not my problem, subbie3! Fix your shizzle!
Alexandru_Cristei
guess I will be back later
:P
dr|z3d
#nottor is up and taking visitors!
Alexandru_Cristei
thank you,dr|z3d
dr|z3d
Alexandru_Cristei: As you see fit. No problem, see you soon!
kose
so ... could anyone help me with my 502 error problem?
dr|z3d
Remind us, kose..
kose
502 Disconnected operation and object not in cache
Generated ***, ** Mar 2010 **:**:** *** by Polipo on localhost:8118.
The following error occurred while trying to access http://hotmail.com/:

dr|z3d
Repeatable, kose?
predictably repeatable. reproducible?
kose
no
it happens totally at random
dr|z3d
So hotmail works sometimes, and not other times?
kose
oh
dr|z3d
(for example)
kose
I don't know. I've just been trying google and hotmail as my only sites.
dr|z3d
Right, so hotmail works at least some of the time?
kose
no, never
dr|z3d
Ok. So, reproducible, then.. :)
Not random at all..
My hunch is one of two things: hotmail's somehow doing some blocking. Or you've unearthed a polipo bug.
chrisd
do you have the proxyOffline option set anywhere? setting that would cause the error message you mention
kose
if I do, I didnt do it on purpose. I setup polipo with the config at torproject.org
dr|z3d
kose: I'll hand you over to chrisd.. the official polipo maintainer these days. :)
chrisd
kose: you should read the config file just to make sure it isnt set
dr|z3d
Is polipo's version significant at all, chrisd?
(ie: any recent innovations/fixes we should know about?) :)
chrisd
nope, handling of proxyOffline hasn't changed lately
i checked 1.0.4
bja
My 2 cents, polipo with tor's config works fine on hotmail.com
At least on this end
chrisd
kose: did you add any cmd line arguments to polipo
?
nsa
or: phobos committed revision 22067 (/website/trunk/torbrowser/en): add a space between the language and the i386 gnu/linux tbb.
kose
chrisd: I have to leave, but I'll check back tomorrow night at the latest.
chrisd
kose: alright
nsa
or: erinn committed revision 22068 (/website/trunk/torbrowser/en): fix torbrowser page so that the linux stuff looks less chaotic
frazzydee
has tor been suspiciously fast for everyone else over the past couple days? ;)
dr|z3d
It's seen notably swift responses, sure.
frazzydee
dr|z3d: any particular reason for this? It's always been very slow for me, before this week
dr|z3d
Time of day, mostly, I guess. Tor seems to have sweetspots.
frazzydee
oh, makes sense..last I checked there were only a couple hundred exit nodes
s/checked/heard from some random person
dr|z3d
http://torstatus.blutmagie.de might give you a better idea :)
There's a possibly better url, kprogstatus? But I forget it offhand.
frazzydee
oh. Well that is quite a bit more than a couple hundred (although still not very many)
sunkoo
i can't setup
dr|z3d
sunkoo: More info needed... what's the issue?

formalist
lol, i just encountered a bug that i probably can't reproduce :(
shahn
sad
4
formalist
i tried to reproduce it but it just won't happen.
shahn
ops
well, what is the bug?
formalist
tor doesn't handle all of the torrc option changes upon sighup necessarily well.
dr|z3d
(Action) sets mode +freebeer.but.no.ops shahn
shahn
true.
formalist
it was the mapaddress option.
shahn
hrm, thaat is supposed to work
formalist
i removed the line from torrc and sighup.
shahn
that
formalist
...and it did delete the mapping.
it didn't delete it.
i had to map it to something else, then sighup, then remove the line, and then sighup.
problem went away.
strange bug.
shahn
was the hup logged as successful?
formalist
i suppose for now on, as a precaution, i'll do this.
yeah. each time.
shahn
hrm.

Neeraj
hello
i would like to speak to someone who is guiding for the gsoc program
anyone there?
duckie
hi
Neeraj
hi duckie
are you a mentor?
duckie
no, I just hang out here
xtoaster
duckie: is duckie pronounced like "donkey" ?
Neeraj
duckie: are you a student
hi xtoaster
xtoaster
hello
Neeraj: i think you are looking for ppl like sebstine, arma, phobos, mikeperry, :-0 i know nothing about gsoc. lets see if they are around.
Runa
Neeraj: just ask your question :)
xtoaster
hello Runa. sorry missed you. :-p
Runa
xtoaster: don't worry ;p
Neeraj
ok Runa
as you sai
say
Actually i am applying for Improving Tor's ability to resist censorship idea
i have been using tor for quite sometime now
and i am really interested in knowing all about it and to contribute to the tor project
Runa
have you read about the project on the volunteer page?
Neeraj
i have read the document manuals and some pdfs
yep
i have also read some papers from free heaven.net/anonbib
Runa
ok, do you have any specific questions? If so, then you could email those questions to tor-assistants@torproject.org
Neeraj
i have to discuss some ideas about it
ok
Runa
:)
Neeraj
Runa: am i too late to join the project cause i came to know it started on 18th march and i am joining it now?
Runa
Neeraj: you are not too late. The deadline to apply is April 9th :)
Neeraj: and the student application period opens on Monday
Neeraj
i meant to say if i can make a good proposal
yep i just came to know that
Runa
Neeraj: see https://socghop.appspot.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2010/faqs#timeline :)
SukhE
Runa: I was wondering what is tor's policy on taking in students with no development experience? I am also a potential student.
Neeraj
yep i have seen that just now and hence the panic
hi SukhE
SukhE
Hello.
Neeraj
are you from India?
SukhE
Yup.
Neeraj
me too
which college?
SukhE
Neeraj: Will PM. Don't want to spam the channel.
Neeraj
k
Runa
SukhE: what matters to us is that you have a good proposal and that you show that (1) you know what you're doing, and (2) that you can complete the project within the given timeframe
SukhE
Runa: I see. That is good.
Runa
SukhE: a general interest in the project doesn't hurt either. We are looking for students that are willing to stay in this community after GSoC as well :)
SukhE
Hehe. I see. Though I don't see how anyone could not want to contribute to tor.
:)
Runa
:)
SukhE: may I ask which project you wish to apply for?
SukhE
Runa: "An Improved and More Usable Network Map in Vidalia"
Actually I have good C++ skills (no C), this suits me. And I know Qt.
Runa
SukhE: cool :)
Neeraj
Runa: is the Improving Tor's ability to resist censorship idea too difficult?
SukhE
Want to contribute to tor cause of personal preferences.
Runa
Neeraj: I don't know, to be honest. The description does say that the projects involves "a lot of research and design".
Neeraj
ok
SukhE
Runa: I think the project I mentioned is much desired, yes? Since I notice that Vidalia's current map is pretty basic.
phobos
SukhE: there is code to support KDE Marble in vidalia's svn
and in the past we built test packages with it
but marble has issues on windows
as in, getting it to build and package
and then there's letting a user choose country of exit or entry
which we think needs marble to be easier to code and handle the coordinates on the map to country selection
SukhE
phobos: I see. So Marble has already been integrated. Now the work involves to: 1) Make it run on Windows 2). Letting a user choose country of exit or entry?
Neeraj
Runa: What should i study?
phobos
the hard work of integrating marble is done
vidalia's svn repo has its own import of marble
which probably could be synced with upstream
SukhE
Yup, I agree. I don't think that will qualify as a three month project then. (1) and (2) i.e.
phobos
getting it to work with windows is probably quick
Runa
Neeraj: it's a bit hard to say. I mean, do you have any specific questions? do you have an idea on how to solve the problem?
phobos
figuring out how to map the countries and a display UI is more difficult
and could be months of work
SukhE
Hmm, I guess I should read up on that then.
phobos
if you already know c++ and qt, you're ahead of the game
SukhE
I do, but I have never done a proper project. Only the small ones that my curriculum requires me to. And I feel that unless you do a proper project, you have not exploited a language fully.
phobos
well, what a fine way to learn
SukhE
Uhm?
Anyways, I wil start by checking out Vidalia the SVN and see what all has been done.
Neeraj
Runa: yep i have some idea .....but dont know if they are feasible or no
Runa
Neeraj: difficult for me to say unless you share :)
Neeraj
so want to discuss and to see what else can be done
ok
should i say here or in the mailing list?
Runa
Neeraj: feel free to use the mailing list
Neeraj
ok
runa i fear if the ideas are a total absurd ones
:(
