what's the difference between a guard server and a non guard server?
Sebastian
clients choose guards for their first hop
katmagic
Why are directory authorities hard coded?
mikeperry
bootstrapping purposes. they can be specified in the .torrc if you want to use an alternate/test network
we aren't aware of any public, free alternate tor networks though
katmagic
But why don't they just come in the default config file?
mikeperry
because it can be missing, corrupted or lost
we also need their key material too
blognewb
hi everyone, how do you guys make the "Flash Media Server" protocol pass through Tor? Is there a way to doit? do you guys know how to do a system wide proxy in windows?
katmagic
http://markus.revti.com/2009/01/squid-transparent-proxy-server-on-windows-server-2003/
mikeperry
blognewb: you mean like to let you watch flash videos, or to serve flash content via a hidden service or something?

blognewb
mikeperry: yea watch flash videos :(
downstream
like say watch and/or download flash from UK-exclusive videos when i am in the US
FMS is so tricky
katmagic
Unset the 'Disable plugins during Tor usage.' setting on TorButton. Doing this will compromise your anonymity, but should allow you to watch location-aware YouTube videos.
mikeperry
https://www.torproject.org/torbutton/faq.html.en#noflash
circumventing location awareness is not something we currently support, though
if you happen to get an exit in the US, you'll still lose
blognewb
" It is possible to use a LiveCD or VMWare-based solution such as Tor VM or Incognito that creates a secure, transparent proxy to protect you from proxy bypass, however issues with local IP address discovery and Flash cookies still remain"
aw :(
arma
yeah. tor vm is your best bet.
but really, you're on windows. you mostly lose if your adversary cares.
katmagic
heh
blognewb
arma: but the IP address will still be revealed :( what is the use
mikeperry
blognewb: not necessarily. flash needs to do some special stuff to do that, or become convinced your proxy is dead, it doesn't happen by default
blognewb
oh
mikeperry
it at least makes an attempt to use the proxy in my experience
torvm will prevent this bypass entirely
but, again, flash actually has a lot of power over your computer, and can gather a lot of info about it if the flash application wants to
it can also hook to the microphone and/or webcam too, but I believe this ability is off for most sites by default
arma
unless there's a flash bug, which there's never been since it's the bestest most secure software ever
mikeperry
adobe really doesn't give a damn about the average computer user's security
as can be seen from their security fix track record for pdf and flash
and they *especially* don't give a damn about your privacy
because the companies that pay them lots and lots of money for flash media server really don't want them to
one of the reasons why firefox and the other browsers are trying to replace most flash use with the video+media tags
of course none of them can agree on a common open format, so...
really adobe is incentivized entirely against the average user in favor of the people who actually pay them for their software. its really a tragedy we're all stuck with their software nonetheless
</rant>
phobos
producer pays models make lots of money, screw the users
blognewb
hi mikeperry katmagic do i have to uninstall my regular tor/vidalia bundle before i use torVM
arma
yes, probably
in theory they can coexist, but it probably won't be very fun
blognewb
what's the diff between torvm bundle and network installer?
the bundle has what?
arma
all the stuff that the network installer would fetch.
oh, the tor vm package (and the network installer) are probably months out of date. nobody has updated it.
blognewb
arma: it said qemu.exe has stopped working
o-o :(
arma: is it because i uninstalled vidalia

having trouble getting tor to run on ubuntu. attempted instructions here https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en but tor check still says nogo. help?

katmagic
Ox83: on Ubuntu, use https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en#ubuntu
Auto-updates are teh bestest!
arma
Ox83: apt-get remove privoxy first
then restart polipo after you've changed its config file
Ox83
ok. ty. sequence to privoxy removal is impt?
arma
your problem is that you have privoxy and polipo both configured to use the same port
whichever one started first won
bja
Does anyone know of a link "get me uptodate in networking" which is easily readable?
Ox83
arma: many thanks. i had killed privoxy already but not in the order you indicated. works fine.
next goal: config for my email & irc
slows browsing considerably though eh?
Sebastian_
yes. If you're using one of the alphas, it should get faster after an hour and a half or so
but performance is still a lot slower, of course.
blognewb_
hellO?
Str
hello
blognewb_
oh
hey guys my torvm is messed up.. it doesn't open vidalia by itself
do i have to open vidalia manually.. the QEMU exe file keeps on stopping
Str
qry Sebastian_ he might help you
blognewb_
Str: i uninstalled the vidalia bundle prior to getting torvm.. do you think i shouldn't have done that
Str
as i have never used torvm i have no diea
idea*
Sebastian_
or do not query Sebastian.
Str
help is there :)
phobos
does torvm even use vidalia?
blognewb_
phobos: it has vidalia in the scrshot https://www.torproject.org/torvm/index.html.en
phobos
did you fully remove the old tor installation first?
Sebastian_
blognewb_: So you say your qemu is quitting?
blognewb_
Sebastian_: ya :( on vista.. i think i was close to making it work but i dunno if this quitting qemu is an issue
phobos
torvm is some old tor
Sebastian_
well, yes. Tor is running in that vm
I'm afraid torvm hasn't been updated in ages
phobos
and we should really rename it to torNIC or something
Sebastian_
there might well be a newer qemu version out fixing your problem
phobos
(Action) adds it to helix' todo list
helix
torvm?
blognewb_
Sebastian_: wow really?! i tried searching for the torvm page but what i get is just that one link above
Sebastian_
hm
blognewb_
is there a version page or something
Sebastian_
torvm is kind of dead without coderman
blognewb_
like cvs
err svn
coderman?!
helix
phobos: sounds good :)
blognewb_
omg i am getting more and more confused
how about incognito?
Sebastian_
blognewb_: https://svn.torproject.org/svn/torvm/trunk/
phobos
remove torvm
blognewb_
is incognito a better option?
phobos
incognito is abandoned
use amnesia
blognewb_
Sebastian_: remove torvm?
ok
omg amnesia coderman incognito ohmy
phobos
indeede
blognewb_
sorry hang on so i should amnesia?
Sebastian_
blognewb_: coderman is a person. He used to work on torvm.
blognewb_
*use amnesia
phobos
welcome to the fast and loose world of online anonymity
blognewb_
oh
Sebastian_
incognito is a Tor live cd. It was replaced by amnesia.
blognewb_
sorry lol
phobos
let's start over
what are you trying to do blognewb_?
blognewb_
well if not only for the fu*ked up developers at adobe and their leaky RTMP / FMS protocol
phobos: tor does not direct fms protocols to the proxy
phobos
i'm sure adobe feels these fu*ked up users who want privacy should just go away
blognewb_
or rather, fms uses direct ip
phobos
ok
is this with some video site like youtube or something?
blognewb_
so should i get amnesia, ditch torvm sir?
phobos
if so, i use a video downloader through tor
blognewb_
yes sir
phobos
although, it's linux based
blognewb_
yeah that's what they said
phobos
amnesia will work too
blognewb_
either use Torvm or incognito in the guide
so should i get amnesia, ditch torvm sir?
phobos
yes, it'll work better than torvm does
and so you know, amnesia is a live cd
so you have to burn a cd/usb drive and boot from it
or run it inside a virtual machine
blognewb_
oh gosh this torvm has already made a new user account should i remove that too
phobos
yes
blognewb_
ok
phobos: do you guys know the amnesia link, i couldn't find it
phobos
it's on our website somewhere
(Action) searches for it
blognewb_
oh phobos https://amnesia.boum.org/ ??? i get a security warning in chrome
Sebastian_
that is because Chrome doesn't like cacert
blognewb_
cacert?
Sebastian_
you should install cacert's root, or realize that ssl is a piece of crap anyways
https://www.cacert.org/
blognewb_
alpha software?
no beta status?
Sebastian_
erm
alpha or beta are just names
when git calls something stable, it means something very different from a Debian stable
blognewb_
ok sorry if i ask too much i am really a beginnger
beginner
at this
phobos
yes https://amnesia.boum.org/ is correct
blognewb_
https://amnesia.boum.org/download/ ?
ok for win usage?
phobos
no, it's not a windows program
blognewb_
oh gosh what the hell
im lost
so do i just make this torvm work
katmagic
Do you know what BitTorrent is?
blognewb_
katmagic: yes sir
katmagic
Download https://amnesia.boum.org/torrents/files/amnesia-i386-gnome-0.4.2-20100207.torrent , then burn it to a CD with http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm
Then reboot, keeping the CD in the drive.
On most systems, you *should* boot from the CD automatically, but you may have to press a special key (usually ESC or F12) before your OS (Windows) starts and select the 'Boot from CD' option.
(When I say 'it', I mean the .iso file in the torrent's directory, not the .asc signature.)
blognewb_
katmagic: so phobos was wrong in implying it cannot work for windows?
katmagic
It's a LiveCD, so it won't work *with* Windows; it'll replace it.
It's an entire operating system that runs from a CD.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LiveCD

blognewb: pastebin
blognewb
it's useless -_-'
i tried both downloadables of torvm
do you guys know the trunk url again
katmagic
What are you trying to execute?
That was a LiveCD; you shouldn't have executed anything.
blognewb
katmagic: torvm :D
i was still trying to beat this torvm like a dead horse see if it will work
Ox83
any opinions on running privoxy vs. polipo with tor, which is "better" & why
