or: arma committed revision 22016 (/website/trunk/en): fix the window title too
arma
there, i just made the irc part stand out a bit more
Sebastian
hah
just as I'm patching it
arma
you are patching gsoc.wml?
Sebastian
yes
arma
in that case, should i commit early and screw you up, or wait? ;)
Sebastian
but no conflicts so far
arma
(Action) will wait
Sebastian
as you wish
feel free to commit

arma
i've been editing our profile on google too
Sebastian
well, please do commit
arma
there
nsa
or: arma committed revision 22017 (/website/trunk/en): link to our gsoc 2010 profile
Sebastian
my first commit shall be "revoke arma's stuff" and my second shall be "do my own things"
CONFLICT (content): Merge conflict in en/gsoc.wml
hah
arma
my next plan was to add a "How to get involved" section, right above the ideas list,
where i basically pasted in the content from the mail i just sent berglind
Sebastian
haha
we've added almost the same thing
and we <a href="
been accepted!</a>.
that's what I had ;)
well, feel free to add that section
I should sleep. Fever still not gone
I can update stuff when you're gone and have no chance to fix it
arma
good idea
Sebastian
something went wrong with the socghop site
there's a bunch of whitespace
arma
huh. looks like every time i save, it turns each newline into two newlines.
Sebastian
hah. I'm glad to learn that google has solved the "html forms" issue.
arma
well, the problem is that they're using free software. ;)
Sebastian
yeah. But using free software doesn't mean you're entitled to fixes from everyone ;p
arma
there.
i wonder if this is the year i should switch it around and call us "The Tor Project / The Electronic Frontier Foundation"
nsa
or: arma committed revision 22018 (/website/trunk/en): tighten it up, then add the 'how to get involved' section
arma
(Action) chooses "yes". we can always change it back if people freak out.
(Action) picks tags as
anonymity, android, c, censorship, cryptography, freedom, java, networking,
nonprofit, privacy, python, security
kind of a sissy set of tags. maybe i should be choosing revolution, espionage, wikileaks, regime_change, new_world_order, representative_democracy, direct_action, ...

ioerror
arma: nice
ilter
Tor developers; i wonder that did you face any force from govement of your countries?
i hope no .. but unfortunately it seems possible for some countries.

ioerror
ilter: what do you mean?
danieldg
I would think most countries would put more pressure on tor exit node operators than authors
ilter
ioerror: I mean that as you know some big brothers don't like anonymity because of that time they can't hide their cruelty. Also of course some governments with them and maybe we can say for them.. Finally i hope they can't make pressure on anonymity but i suspect that some governments can put stupid laws to make pressure people who support anonymity.
ioerror
ah, yes
ilter: This could be a problem in some places and we have to create viable alternatives
arma
a surprising number of governments are considering stupid laws. we really need more organizations like eff in more different countries.
ioerror
ilter: I openly run my relays because I am willing to go to prision for free speech
ilter: I have yet to ever have a problem though, so it's a pretty empty statement
ilter: we need more people that care in places where it's not so easy to care
ilter: perhaps that's you?
ilter
Of course ierror. That's the main of my reasons why i'm trying understand and (if i can) develop Tor.
arma: i don't know eff well. Now, i'm googling it ..
ioerror
ilter: wher are you from?
ilter
Turkey
ioerror
How do you feel about your country and it's internet filtering?
ilter
Completely bullsh*t..
ioerror
Welcome to the club :-)
Do you use Tor to circumvent it?
ilter
Maybe you know; even youtube is forbidden in Turkey.
ioerror
I love Turkey by the way, I've been to Istanbul about five times.
Yes, I have personally used Tor to watch Youtube while I was in... taxim
ilter
Yes it's so nice as all the other countries ..
:) It's Taksim.
ioerror
Taksim, yes :-)
Sorry, my Turkish is pretty bad when written
I spent a lot of time in the Ara G├╝ler cafe
I really like that area of Istanbul
ilter
I'm using Tor generally to understand it firstly. Unfortunately it's slow to watch videos for now.
:) np. It's reading same with taxim.
ioerror
ilter: sorry that it's slow - we're working on it
ilter
ioerror: I hope i'll support you to develop it..
ioerror
Please do consider hacking on tor stuff
ilter: do you program? Or translate?
narr
do you use encryption to access this chat? maybe you should
ilter
ioerror: I'm graduate student and i'm trying make a thesis on anonymity to increase resistance against traffic analysis attacks.
ioerror
ilter: you should consider using Tor + SSL to connect to this system
ilter: great!
ilter: you should come to PET!
http://petsymposium.org/2010/cfp.php
narr
i'll try to be there too
ioerror
ilter: apply for a stipend
ilter
narr: You're right. But now i don't use any encryption. They can try their best .. :)
I really want to come there.
ioerror
ilter: please email and ask for a stipend
ilter: additionally, come
ilter
Wow.. Is there any chance to get a stipend for PET?
ioerror
ilter: ask arma
ilter: i think yes
http://petsymposium.org/2010/hotpets.php
ilter
I hope there is ..
ioerror
you may also want to submit a HOTPets
HotPETS even
ilter
I'm looking ioerror. Thank you for your kind helps ..
narr
do you guys need help at PET?
i mean, on site?
ioerror
narr: arma knows best
narr: you can join the mailing list and ask
ilter
But i can go there only as a guest. Because i think i can't finish my thesis for July, 2010.
Unfortunately:(
narr: i need help about PET. But first i need to read some more about it .. What do you mean on site?
narr
i was asking if they need manpower at the symposium
ioerror
ilter: as a guest?
ilter: if you want to submit a HotPET talk, I think you just talk about say, you thesis for 15 minutes
ilter
ioerror: Unfortunately i've been lost about my thesis. Now, i'm starting again to find a new entry point.
I think there is a condition to apply for a HotPET talk. Like requirement reference my thesis during talk .. Is there?
ioerror
ilter: no
ilter: join the mailing list and ask :-)
ilter: we're always happy to have more people attend PETs
ilter
That's good. I'm going to join it now ..
It's done. I'll ask for a stipend but first i need to read more about PET. I'm reading now ..
ioerror
ilter: great
ilter
Traffic analysis is also a suggested topics on PET.. It's so good for me. Meanwhile is there any specific tor developer who works on traffic analysis?
ioerror
ilter: well, all of us work _against_ it ;-)
ilter: sjmurdoch_ and arma work on undersatnding it very well
arma
narr: ask hannes whether he wants manpower help for pet. maybe yes. i don't know.
ilter: you don't have to have finished your thesis to tell people about it at pet. you just have to have something interesting to tell them about.
ilter
arma: Ok maybe i will have before deadline, April 24.
narr
arma: i'll ask on the mailinglist
there's no info about entrance fees yet?
ilter
arma: Also you know visa is required for me to go Germany. Do you know how can we provide invitation letters etc. to get visa?
Anyway i'll ask it on pet mail-list. Thank you ioerror, arma and narr for helpful conversations. I should go to sleep now .. Goodbye.
narr
yeah me too
good night
joetimes
hi, newbie here, wheres best for mildly technical queries?
dr|z3d
joetimes: Here's good, assuming you've done some background reading. Otherwise, the website and wiki are good first ports of call :)
joetimes
great, ill spend an hour digging there, then come back if im still nonplussed :)
dr|z3d
Perfect. You'll get a much better response that way :)
somegeek
Hi. How do I connect to IRC over Tor? I have an IRC client that doesn't seem to allow proxies per server. I have Privoxy, but don't know how to configure it.
pipe
you need a socks wrapper
tsocks, torify (using tsocks), etc
gouki
somegeek, what's the IRC client?
somegeek
Konversation
I've been trying a few. Don't recommend any terminal based ones or xchat. :)
This is the one that fits me best right now.
pipe
except it doesn't, since it doesn't do what you need :P
gouki
Konversation has support for SOCKSv5, and you probably have tsocks installed.
somegeek
So, how would I configure it? Would Privoxy work?
pipe
no
tor is a socks proxy
somegeek
I know, but I meant as in having rules in Privoxy for what to send where
pipe
ah
gouki
somegeek, try a "native" connection to port 9050 on the proxy configurations of konversation.
I mean, regular connection.
somegeek
That would send everything to TOr
Sebastian
I think the problem is that while Konversation has socsk support, it is only the socks support for all kde apps
somegeek
I have Privoxy, does anybody know how to configure it?
Sebastian: ?
Sebastian
is that your problem?
somegeek
Konversation can either have a proxy or not. I want a proxy for *one* connection (or several in the future, but stil not for all)
I don't want two IRC clients!
Sebastian
ah. Good luck.
gouki
That's a whole different problem than the one we were talking about.
You can't "bypass" the proxy for a single connection.
XChat, for example, allows you to do that.
Sebastian
well, it might be possible
with a plugin or something
somegeek
guiki: Did you see my line a bit up?
Sebastian
what you really want to do is find help from the Konversation makers
somegeek
No xchat, no terminal clients. :P
Sebastian
this is not about Tor at all.
somegeek
Well, I was thinking from the beginning that I wanted to use Privoxy
pipe
privoxy is also not tor
Sebastian
somegeek: I have no idea how privoxy would help you
maybe it can
who knows
somegeek
pipe: What a coincidence that that's your nickname. I wanted Privoxy to pipe some requests through Tor
gouki
somegeek, I have a lot of lines in front of me. Sorry, I might have missed it.
pipe
somegeek: I think you'll get better answers if you turn to either some privoxy or konversation support channel
somegeek
Where are those? Freenode?
pipe
I heard about this new website where you can check things like that
somegeek
(Action) asks for link
dr|z3d
somegeek: Try setting up Tor for _this_ network.
Once you've established that works, then you can go about testing the network policy of other networks.
Sebastian
dr|z3d: we're not talking about network policy at all
dr|z3d
My bad.. I saw freenode mentioned when I returned and assumed the usual.. must have missed the intervening stuff.
pipe
dr|z3d: His problem is that for various unknown reasons, he refuse to use an irc client that can do what he needs
dr|z3d: So he wants to know if he can use software unrelated to Tor to patch the IRC client
dr|z3d
Ah, well, it seems he's been recommended tsocks or socat..
Sebastian
really people
read backlog
it's ok
everyone can do it.
dr|z3d
Don't patronize me, thanks.
somegeek
I don't know what better IRC clients there are that I can use without my head blowing up, and what software I can configure and how
so, tsocks and socat? How would I use them?
Sebastian
somegeek: you cannot use them for your usecase.
pipe
Hm
Sebastian
they would, again, socksify your entire traffic.
somegeek
I guess I have to go and ask the Privoxy team then, right?
Sebastian
yes. Or learn to live with an exploding head
