narr
hi
"Since it sounds like you're using the Debian source, you'll need to modify the configure line in debian/rules with the right options"
anyone an idea what that means?
Sebastian
yup
Sorry
I was dumb
narr
still trying to compile :)
Sebastian
earlier
narr
config.status: configure
dh_testdir
./configure \
$(confflags) \
i tried adding my options there, but that didn't work
Sebastian
I forgot you were trying to build the debian package
rudi_s
narr: Why not use the official package?
narr
config.status: configure
dh_testdir
./configure \
$(confflags) \
sorry
@rudi_s: see http://bugs.noreply.org/flyspray/index.php?do=details&id=1315
i'm trying to use openSSH 1.0.0 and openbsd-malloc for memory optimizations

Sebastian
narr: ok
rudi_s
narr: Can you use dpkg-buildpackage?
Sebastian
so I guess that is from the debian/rules script?
narr
Sebastian: yes
rudi_s: I can do everything as long as it is somewhat specific, I'm new to this
Sebastian
narr: hrm ok. That's what I would've suggested... I don't do debian packages at all, though. I guess you should try a debian channel maybe
or hope that helix or weasel have any additional input. Not sure how busy they are currently.
rudi_s
narr: Okay, then forget my dpkg-buildpackage (you must set it up first). I haven't followed the conversion, what's the exact problem? Doesn't ./configure && make work? The messages means you have to update debian/rules and add the options you need there.
narr
i could probably use make & make install, but i'd stick to packages
i don't feel well building it myself at all
rudi_s
narr: How are you building it at the moment?
narr
the package building works, it just doesn't use my settings
debuild -rfakeroot -uc -us
from the documentation
rudi_s
narr: Ah, I see. Then update the debian/rules file to contain the options you want.
narr
yes that's what i to do, but i don't know how exactly
rudi_s
narr: What options do you need?
helix
narr: sorry, I meant like this:
narr: http://paste.debian.net/64539/
narr
i tried adding them after sysconfigdir...
helix
what happened?
and yeah that should be fine
Sebastian
ah hey helix, thanks
narr
i tried adding them afterwards in one line, but that didn't work
now it builds
helix
okay
cool
narr
thanks for now, i'll let you know if it works
helix
np, I'll be around

narr
thanks rudi_s & Sebastian for trying to help too :)
rudi_s
np ;-)
narr
[notice] OpenSSL OpenSSL 1.0.0-beta5 20 Jan 2010 looks like version 0.9.8m or later; I will try SSL_OP to enable renegotiation
looks good
does it? :)
helix
narr: yes, that looks correct
to me anyway
arma: ^^
narr
thanks helix
seems to work
helix
awesome :)
Sebastian
thanks for running a relay. Let's hope it worksn ow
narr
i hope that is runs stable now, we'll see within a few days
helix
yeah, thanks to you too
_lance_
welp, looks like one of my vps providers sent me a suspention notice and asked me what i was using all that bandwidth for
phobos
"saving the world"
arma
"saving the world"?
_lance_
"unmetetered" my foot. I didn't even use a terabyte.
arma
ha.
_lance_
i wrote them back saying i was running a tor relay and guard node and asked if they could up my hard quota to 3.3tb. let's see how they respond.
phobos
ok, "I'm saving the world by running a tor relay."
_lance_
otoh, having the relay going so long on a $6.45/month vps was a pretty good deal :)
I totally understand if they want to terminate my account, they'd probably be losing about $14/month on me just on the cost of the commit otherwise..
awesome, they're not terminating me.
hm. anyone know how RelayBandwidthBurst works?
like, if i set RelayBandwidthRate to 2mbit and Burst to 3mbit, is it safe to say that i'll be (approximately) at 2mbit per month for purposes of 95th percentile billing?
arma
lance: keep in mind that tor counts in bytes, not bits
_lance_
arma: yup, i'm doing the conversions for the torrc

phobos: are you about to do a push? if so plz hold
phobos
i'm doing a build right now
i can wait
building takes a bit anyway
helix
the rpms are up btw, I just want to get the .10 orbot included
nsa

also, builds and pushes are free
like version numbers
if only these wml files weren't full of fail
helix
haha

ohhhh, i see why
my tor-doc-windows.wml was overwritten by the portal

ok. pushed the site
CoJaBo-Aztec
Anyone know what this means? "Not enough good signatures on networkstatus consensus"
Tor stopped working sometime in the last few days, nothing was changed (that I know of) in the mean time.
xtoaster
what's your Tor version ?
CoJaBo-Aztec
xtoaster: Hm, 0.2.0.34... Could that be the cause, do they not support older versions or something?
Is there a way to upgrade it in Ubuntu?
_lance_
Do you have the torproject repositories installed in your sources.list?
CoJaBo-Aztec
Probably not, nor can I find them on the site..
_lance_
Let me dig up the instructions
https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian.html.en
The url says debian but the instructions are the same for ubuntu
CoJaBo-Aztec
Hm, how did I miss that..
_lance_
Just replace <DISTRIBUTION> with hardy/intrepid/jaunty/karmic/etc
CoJaBo-Aztec
_lance_: Ok. Is that likely the reason it wont connect?
_lance_
I'm not sure, but that's an old version with some security problems iirc and you ought to upgrade anyhow
CoJaBo-Aztec
(Action) will try
What kind of bad things could come of running an old version, btw?
_lance_
http://archives.seul.org/or/talk/Jan-2010/msg00161.html
i'm afraid i'm not informed enough about it to give you a good answer
new
Hi, running newest portable tor for win, having problems all day connecting, log says "unable to load consensus directory downloaded from server 86.59.21.38:443.... anyone else having problems?
CoJaBo-Aztec
_lance_: Ok, that makes sense why it doesnt work then- thanks!
new
log says "not enought good signatures on networkstatus consensus
_lance_
CoJaBo-Aztec: np
CoJaBo-Aztec
new: What version is that?
new
PortableTor-0.2.1.19-0.1.15-0
CoJaBo-Aztec
new: Looks like you need at least 0.2.1.22
Possibly portable version hasnt been updated yet.
new
correct.
it was working all morning, then stopped working this afternoon
CoJaBo-Aztec
I just had the same problem, it seems that the new version includes an updated list of those servers.
new
ah, ok. I normally like running the portable version, but I'll install the new one
CoJaBo-Aztec
It seems the old ones got compromised, and were probably shut down, according to the link _lance_ just posted for me: http://archives.seul.org/or/talk/Jan-2010/msg00161.html
new
interesting
CoJaBo-Aztec
"Tor has successfully opened a circuit. Looks like client functionality is working." w00t!
How many others are still running the old version, I wonder? o_O
new
mine is working too.... thanks for your help
CoJaBo-Aztec
That should probably be put in the topic and/or torblog at least, presumably lots more will be coming in...
arma
cojabo-aztec: yes, a few days ago we finally stopped signing with the old (potentially compromised) signing keys
we had been signing with both, for the transition period
MoiraA
CoJaBo-Aztec you get everywhere
does anyone know how you can set tor to connect to the fastest servers?
and which those are?
I vaguely heard about it, and tor is so slow for browsing I thought I'd give this a try
rudi_s
MoiraA: You can't (and shouldn't).
nsa
or: pootle committed revision 21996 (/translation/trunk/projects/website/es/docs): make phobos's two changes in the source po files too
MoiraA
but someone like seb was telling me
someone in here, respectable
phobos
the -alpha's are faster than -stable right now
rudi_s
MoiraA: Well, you can choose specific (exit) nodes .. but you shouldn't do that (it hurts your anonymity and the performance of the network).
MoiraA
that would be it
my anonymity is not that important, it was just to see how tor performed generally that's all
would you add them to your tor config file?
I won't do it
I'm just trying to learn a bit
in fact I never really use tor for browsing, just for irc
rudi_s
MoiraA: Yes, you can set them in your torrc file. But the question is what are fast nodes (because fast nodes will get more traffic) ..
MoiraA
like I say, I don't want to know if it's not recommended
rudi_s
;-)
MoiraA
I was just interested in well, knowing more about tor really
I hadnt meant to ask a "dodgy" question
cannot find my torrc in mac anyway
god knows what mac does with it
oh it's a hidden file
one torrc is blank
none the wiser, except what a shame I had to reject so many ports as exit nodes thanks to irc policy
rudi_s
MoiraA: No problem :-) I'm glad you want to learn more about Tor. I just had to look up the options as well. To restrict the nodes which are used you can use the EntryNodes, ExitNodes (or to disable some ExcludeNodes, ExcludeExitNodes options).
There are also settings to make this strict (AFAIK at the moment these settings are only a recommendation for Tor to use them if available).
arma
but note that excludenodes and excludeexitnodes may surprise you in what they do. see bug ..whatever number that is, where we're tracking that.
MoiraA
I have found ExitPolicy
I have loads of ports restricted - I had to to get off these damned proxy lists for irc
AsTa
hi. can anyone tell me where a non-developer, non-expert user can ask one or two questions about some sort of polipo/privoxy problem? a forum somewhere maybe?
MoiraA
ask in here if you like
if users are on another time zone and asleep they will see your issue as soon as they wake up and post an answer
AsTa
ok, i'll try to explain it as good as i can. in on windows and i'm still using a pretty old version of the vidalia bundle. it came with privoxy 3.0.6
i wanted to give one of the new bundles that come with polipo a try since they claim to be faster (because of polipo instead of privoxy)
however, i don't really like/trust polipo since it even fails the test at xenobite.eu
so i tried to update privoxy to the latest version (3.0.16) instead but i fail
no matter what i try i don't have the skills to get it to work
and that's where i need help
CoJaBo-Aztec
Privoxy sucks quite horribly, particularly its ad-blocker (which you cannot turn off).
AsTa
well, it served me well (although slow) so far. polipo on the other side makes me feel unsafe
pipe
if you prefer speed to anonymity, tor isn't for you anyway :)
CoJaBo-Aztec
lol
AsTa
can we please leave the smart-ass stuff out of this? ofc i want anonymity but even the project changed to polipo for speed reasons. it's just a part of what i want...
pipe
Was the speed difference benchmarked and documented anywhere? Would be interesting to read
CoJaBo-Aztec
Privoxy doesnt support things like pipelining, etc- thatd make a pretty big difference.
AsTa
pipe, it's on the official blog and it was mentioned there several times but i'm not even here to discuss that
all i'm asking for is if someone can or is willing to help me with getting privoxy 3.0.16 to work with tor
because i don't feel safe when using polipo. that's all
CoJaBo-Aztec
IIRC, all that needs done is setting it not to log and pointing it at Tor's SOCKS port.
AsTa
i'm sure it's easy when you know what you're doing but i even compared the old and new config files side by side and still didn't get it to work
pipe
AsTa: I don't think I'm running privoxy anywhere at the moment, it makes it a little difficult to help
or hm
Running 3.0.9 on a computer here
AsTa: As far as I know, the only thing you should need to change from the default is to add this line:
forward-socks4a / 127.0.0.1:9050 .
MoiraA
firefox with torbutton is easily the best option
