arma
yay, trunk.torstatus should be coming back online today
dun
arma, if you keep beeing curious and need anything information on my set up, just highlight me and i'll answer tomorrow, going to bed now
arma
sounds good. enjoy your sleep.
dun
:)
toupl
i keep getting this error:
502 Disconnected operation and object not in cache
arma
sounds like you're running your http cache in 'offline' mode
or your browser
toupl
but i get it minutes after browsing the internet with no problems arma
arma
more details?
toupl
it happens completely randomly
what else would you like to know arma?
arma

I LOVE TOR but it's slow for me. I'm from Canada and find it gets faster to access pages when I leave it open for a while with TORbutton active in Mozilla. Does anyone else find this?
arma
which tor version?
0.2.2.x has a feature that makes it faster over time
echelon
kaustic, it doesn't matter how long you leave torbutton enabled
perhaps it's a matter of how long you have tor running, but that's it
toupl
i keep getting this error:
echelon
also, i've had good results from lowering the circuit build timeout in the src
toupl
502 Disconnected operation and object not in cache
echelon
are you using polipo?
toupl
can anyone help me with this?
yes
echelon
did you grab the polipo config from the svn?
toupl
what is the svn?
BarkerJr
subversion
toupl
i have no idea, sorry
kaustic
any other ways to speed this up or will I always hajve to wait 5-10 seconds for page load
Sebastian
that's pretty normal with tor, unfortunately
BarkerJr
kaustic, you can disable images
Sebastian
kaustic: using the latest Tor version often helps with performance a little, too
echelon
toupl, https://svn.torproject.org/svn/torbrowser/trunk/build-scripts/config/polipo.conf
Sebastian
but a page load time of 5 seconds is pretty good
echelon
kaustic, are you on windoze?
anrxc
kaustic: sometimes you will end up on a faster relay

kaustic
yes windoys
windows
anything fast and as anonymous as TOR
echelon
oh, then you'll have to get some native dev tools like mingw to build tor from source
kaustic
or almost as anonymous
proxies always keep logs so they
're out
server logs*
anrxc
not all circuits are slow, sometimes browsing is so smooth I forget I'm using tor
toupl
thanks echelon. where would be a good place to put that file?
anrxc
but 15 minutes later I am reminded :)
echelon
toupl, if you're on *nix, likely.. /etc/polipo/, and it should be renamed to "config"
toupl
echelon: its the same
echelon
the settings?
toupl
well I don't know about every setting but it looks like the same file
echelon
polipo does have a tendency to timeout very quickly
is this for .onion sites?
toupl
echelon: no
echelon
the 502 errors
hrm
Sebastian
echelon: the windows package will use that file by default
toupl
im using linux
echelon
oh
toupl, add this to torrc "CircuitBuildTimeout 5"
toupl
ok
kaustic
is TOR's main angle of privacy in that it uses people using TOR (with it open) to bounce data transmission off. Maintaining privacy because user clients don't keep connection logs like servers do
echelon
user clients can log if they want to
but that's not the reason why tor is anonymous
Sebastian
echelon: wow
that isn't good advice
circuitbuildtimeout 5 is very low
kaustic
is it?
echelon
:/
Sebastian
that hurts the network a lot, and restricts your choice of nodes
kaustic
why is it anonymous then echelon
echelon
kaustic, because you can hop through multiple nodes
Sebastian
kaustic: Tor provides anonymity becaus even if some nodes in your patch log, they need to work together to reveal your identity
that stil means that logging is bad
but you're still protected.
toupl
echelon: its still giving me the error. i also forgot to tell you that it gives me the error instantly.
kaustic
cool cool
arma
echelon: bad advice.
echelon
-_-
arma
echelon: the correct advice, if you want to mess with circuitbuildtimeout, is "run 0.2.2.x"
echelon
well it's made my surfing much smoother
toupl
arma could you elaborate please
i have the noreply repo
arma
echelon: yes, but it could make tor totally unusable. the new development versions of tor automatically compute a good timeout for you.
toupl
i thought it updates it automatically
arma
toupl: which version? stable or development?
toupl
stable
arma
the development version will be somewhat faster for you
toupl
but does it have security holes
arma
not that we know of.
toupl
ok
arma
also, "the noreply repo" is out of date. see the new 'tor on debian' page.
https://www.torproject.org/docs/debian
toupl
new since when?
arma
2 or 3 months ago?
toupl
ok
arma: will this automatically replace my old package
arma
(Action) is going to guess that's a 'yes'
Sebastian
yup
toupl
i guess that answers my question
helix
haha
toupl
still getting the same fu*king error
jr__
now now, this is a channel with family values
:D
toupl
lol
arma
toupl: what version of polipo? how did you install it? with what config? did you restart it?
is privoxy running too?
toupl
sorry if this is a stupid question, but, how do you restart polipo?
arma
/etc/init.d/polipo restart
...depending on how you installed it.
toupl
another possibly stupid question: where do you find out what version of polipo you're using?
or, how?
anyone?
i think there is some terminal command that will give you the version of any program but I forgot what it is
echelon
you can check your distro's package management utility
toupl
polipo 1.4.1-1.1
1.0.4-1.1*
helix
toupl: if you're using debian it is dpkg -l packagename
toupl
ubuntu
helix
same :)
toupl
I installed it using the polipo site instructions
with the default config file
I restarted it and it's still giving me this same error
helix?
anyone?
helix
did you use the config file from svn? https://svn.torproject.org/svn/torbrowser/trunk/build-scripts/config/polipo.conf
toupl
yes my file looks just like that
Sebastian
toupl: try this:
/etc/init.d/polipo stop
polipo -c /etc/polipo/polipo.conf
what does it say
toupl
Couldn't open config file /etc/polipo/polipo.conf: 2.
Sebastian
and that's the right path?
and it's readable by the user?
toupl
there's no such file. its just called "config"
should I change the name/
Sebastian
ah
change the command
polipo -c /etc/polipo/config
toupl
Couldn't bind: Address already in use
Couldn't establish listening socket: Address already in use
Sebastian
ok
you have privoxy installed, and it is running
if you don't need privoxy, uninstall it.
toupl
same error
Sebastian
can you check if either privoxy or polipo are already running?
toupl
i uninstalled privoxy. when i try to restart polipo it gives this error:
Restarting polipo: /usr/bin/polipo already running -- doing nothing
Sebastian
right
so, how exactly did you install polipo.
toupl
I don't remember but I followed the given instructions
Sebastian
where?
toupl
on the polipo site
helix
toupl: did you install from source or did you install the package?
Sebastian
did you download the source or installed from a package?
toupl
the package I believe
the package, I believe
Sebastian
ps aux | grep polipo
toupl
proxy 8746 0.0 0.0 2156 876 ? Ss 04:48 0:00 /usr/bin/polipo -c /etc/polipo/config pidFile=/var/run/polipo/polipo.pid daemonise=true logFile=/var/log/polipo/polipo.log forbiddenFile=/etc/polipo/forbidden proxyOffline=true
Sebastian
proxyOffline=true
I wonder where that comes from.
toupl
the config file?
Sebastian
no
it shouldn't
well, I mean that is your issue
it needs to be false
but I wonder why it could have possibly been set to true
toupl
someone hacking me?
Sebastian
no
toupl
how do I fix it?
Sebastian
try apt-get purge polipo
then apt-get install polipo
helix
well, aptitude remove --purge polipo will really clean it out
Sebastian
download the config file, put in /etc/polipo/config
helix: I think they should be equivalent?
helix
aptitude is moar powerful
Sebastian
what does apt-get leave behind?
helix
not sure, but aptitude has better dependency handling in general and it will remove/purge packages that are exquisitely broken
I don't think apt-get can do all that
so I just recommend people use it instead in almost all cases
Sebastian
I've been surprised by some of its "advanced" features ;)
toupl
whats the command to create a file? polipo.conf doesn't exist. or should i just paste the config file to the file "config"?
Sebastian
yup, for example.
toupl
yup to what though?
Sebastian
once you've done that, /etc/init.d/polipo restart
toupl
yup to what though?
helix
you can paste the config to the file "config"
toupl
thanks
The proxy server is refusing connections
"The proxy server is refusing connections"
helix
did you restart polipo?
toupl
yes
but it gave me that same message
helix
what does polipo -c /etc/polipo/config say ?
toupl
ok it finally works :0. thanks very much.
helix
(Action) claps
do you have torbutton installed too?
toupl
yes
helix
ok, so did you go to http://check.torproject.org/ ?
toupl
whoops
