jerad
morning all
anyone good with setting up private tor networks?
Sebastian
Just ask, someone might have an idea.
jerad
can someone help me setup a private tor network, i have the requirements and the time xD
phobos
https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#OwnTorNetwork
jerad
yeah i followed that
phobos
great, so you're all set then
;)
jerad
lol
i ran into problems probably due to my lack of attention to detail
Sebastian
jerad: if you actually ask your question, someone might be able to prove phobos wrong.
phobos
that's pretty much copy and paste

jerad
rly O_o
maybe .... [warn] Your system clock just jumped 360 seconds forward;
is my problem?
(Action) forgot about syncing the clocks...
Sebastian
that message shouldn't be related to clock syncing issues
but maybe there is more
We won't read the faq to you, though. You have to be a bit more precise with your questions ;)
BarkerJr
the version numbers are incorrectly ordered in ChangeLog
arma
barkerjr: yeah, maybe. or they are correctly ordered. they're ordered by date.
with the not-yet-released versions not ordered well yet
BarkerJr
but 0.2.2.8 is above 0.2.1.24
Sebastian
0.2.1.24 fits the not yet released thing
BarkerJr
and 0.2.2.8 is released
so, the released is above the not-yet-released
arma
yep
ah hm. 0.2.1.23 is out of place too.
nickm uses a different changelog ordering than i do.
Sebastian
make check-changelog
BarkerJr
did you know that the Unstable Windows links in the download.html are all broken?
arma
we did not
phobos: ^^
phobos
hmm, since when
jerad
yea
i saw that too
phobos
wtf
it's just the vidalia-bundle for -alpha
there, fixed
nsa
or: phobos committed revision 21701 (/torbrowser/trunk/build-scripts/config): polipo memory to 2^26, remove diskcache from makefile.
synx
so making SASL for IRC in pidgin is frikkin impossible.
It creates the IRC context, and then no signals or callbacks until you get the MOTD.
nsa
or: ioerror committed revision 21702 (/projects): Initial documentation about Tor on the Chumby One
synx
huh, well it compiles...
I just hacked SASL plain authentication into pidgin :p
arma
spiffy. maybe set up a wiki page on how to do it?
subbie3
hello
is this allways this slow

arma
it used to be slower :)
subbie3
so do people remain logd in and say jack sh*t?
synx
story of my life subbie3
subbie3
gay
synx
currently upgrading tors so likely to get kicked off momentarily
subbie3
gay
synx
thhhh
feng
anyone awake?
synx
I'm sure someone is somewhere.
subbie3
im here
feng
i recently got a new laptop and installed vidalia on it. it's been a while since i installed it on my old one, so i'm not sure if privoxy was bundled with it when i did or not, but it was in the same directory at least. this latest download did not include privoxy. why the change?
subbie3
dns server leaks
feng
i'm sry, i don't know what that means
dumb it down for me
synx
privoxy was leaking dns?
feng
lol
so should i not use privoxy while using tor?
subbie3
popolio or what ever the fu*k it is is more safer
i think
feng
but privoxy gets rid of ads
subbie3
i don't know im not as clued up as the rest
ok
feng
damn
subbie3
ads?
feng
advertisements
synx
I never heard privoxy leaked DNS before, but I know less than subbie3
subbie3
disable java script for that
i read it off the site
i think they fixed the problem thou
feng
disabling java script will get lose banner ads?
privoxy removes banner ads from web pages
are you telling me disabling java will
subbie3
yea
cus all the SPAM advertising runs off that program
feng
that doesn't really help if i want to go to sites that use java
do you have a link to what you were reading ab out privoxy and tor
subbie3
no sites need java, its only for advertising
synx
java is an implicit security leak anyway. you wouldn't run .exe files, so why java? :p
subbie3
it was on wikipedia i think
synx is right
feng
if it were such a simple fix, why would banner ads keep using it
synx
people are under the misconception they need java applets, so banner ads can depend on it.
feng
funky
i just turned it off
anat
just route all your traffic through a machine that forwards *everything* over tor
feng
hm?
why
anat
https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TransparentProxy
synx
yeah that'd work... sort of
java could still transmit possibly incriminating information about your computer though.
anat
only if you put incriminating information on your computer
feng
this wikipedia page says that privoxy is a solution to dns leaks
not the cause
..
synx
yeah dunno about that whole DNS thing. I hadn't heard privoxy was leaking DNS.
anat
or have a gps or a wireless adapter, i guess
feng
anat do you know why privoxy isn't bundled with tor anymore?
was it ever, or am i mistaken?
synx
feng: DNS leaks happen when you go to "somesite.com" and you go to your normal DNS server and ask it what IP "somesite.com" is, and then your DNS server contacts the Feds with your IP address. Ideally you would resolve "somesite.com" over tor itself.
anat
i don't know why... i thought privoxy left the dns stuff up to tor if it was configured correctly
subbie3
does anyone have a password for galxchange pn tor
feng
i just installed privo
x
arma
wow. lots of misinformation in the backlog here.
a) if you want to block ads, use the adblock firefox extension.
b) privoxy or polipo are both fine. polipo will make your browsing feel a bit faster.
c) use torbutton, and then you don't have to wonder about java, flash, etc.
d) alas, don't read the wikipedia page on tor. nobody who knows much about tor has had a hand in it.
feng
adblock makes me have to choose them myself
it's nice to just go anywhere and have no ads
anat
feng: that's what easylist is for
feng
what does polipo do exactly
i thought that was default anat
anat
it is
feng
then uh why do i still have banner ads on common sites
apparently it wasn't default
i just set it
anat
actually i think in firefox it pops up and asks you to set it when you first install the extension
feng
well w/e
it didn't
but it doesn't matter now
so what does polipo do exactly?
xtoaster
its a caching proxy
synx
It's a HTTP proxy just like privoxy.
or squid
feng
is it better?
xtoaster
it chain http clients with socks proxy server in tor pack
synx
(Action) shrugs
feng
do privoxy and polipo work even when the torbutton is not on
synx
I just use Firefox with SOCKS5.
xtoaster
socks5 in firefox maks firefox bumpy :-( you know the timeouts
synx
...no I don't
xtoaster
then tor treats you well :). you wil feel it when tor is way sloww under heavy blockage..
synx
I don't usually use tor with Firefox anyway
stupid firefox...
Firefox's stupid FUD scared someone else away from my little site again.
xtoaster
geez
synx
I hate how they upped the error level of untrusted SSL certificates to "amber alert"
xtoaster
maybe you can get a free cert some where . i am not quite sure.
feng
black(hat) market
synx
heh
I got tired of CACert's whining about how great having a national ID is, so I just made my own certificate authority.
xtoaster
i got disabled a bounch of CAs after cnnic ca crept in to my firefox
synx
cnnic?
I always disable the built-in CAs by deleting the nnsckbi library on my computer. Breaks some stuff, but oh well.
SwissTorExit
hello, yeah if you search free CERT ssl, you can use : https://cert.startcom.org/ ;)
but so far i have do my own too, i never have need a registred so far but can be useful
synx
"The Terms and Conditions of StartCom and the StartCom Certification Policy requires* subscribers to provide the correct and complete personal details during registration. Without fulfilling this requirement, a subscriber (you) is not entitled for an account with StartSSL". It is upon the subscriber to prove the validity of the details submitted should StartCom make such a request."
SwissTorExit
well not the best so :/
i just know it but never read the policy ... sad
synx
yeah... the whole SSL hierarchy is a scam anyway though, so not unexpected.
SwissTorExit
so still our own signed Cert the best way..
arma
synx: do you use some other browser with tor rather than firefox?
synx
Not really arma.
SwissTorExit
hi arma, what have you mean abour cslite ? have you liked it ?
arma
cslite? not sure what that is
xtoaster
sounds like a cookie addon
SwissTorExit
we spoke about how control the cookies last time and i have recommended it to you
but you said that some are not great
so i have mean that you have tried it
arma
ah. right.
nope, haven't tried it. i'm bad about my cookies.
xtoaster
i am using cookie whitelist. it works great for me:)
SwissTorExit
oky :D
dunno it xtoaster
xtoaster
its another cookie plugin. much smaller simpler than cslite
http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/browser.php
comodo dragon :)
Why switch to the Comodo Dragon Internet Browser?
SwissTorExit
oky , good to know, well in my case it's already include in my browser plugin but maybe i can test on a new profile and Torbutton
thanks :D
oh it's a whole browser :/
xtoaster
oh its comodo's new browser :comodo dragon
SwissTorExit
arma: what mean this message, well mostly the secound :
févr. 19 08:00:31.751 [Warning] Requested exit node 'UniqueTreeHandle' is in ExcludeNodes or ExcludeExitNodes. Using anyway (circuit purpose 5).
févr. 19 08:00:31.775 [Warning] exit circ (length 3): MTULUG(open) routor(open) UBIT1(open)
i never see exit circ....
arma
did you set excludenodes or excludeexitnodes?
SwissTorExit
yes by ip rang of bad node and seem a new name
arma
in short, it means you're encountering a bug in how we handle excludenodes. i never use it, and no tor developers ever use it. it has never worked.
there's a big thread on or-talk about this, i think. i didn't read it but lots of people were angry. nobody who is angry has ever submitted a bugfix though. :}
SwissTorExit
ok, thanks very much for your great answer, i will try to search it and add my warn, so open a bug report will not useful or it is ?
there so much to do, i still sad to can't help :/
arma
there are a couple of bug reports already
i fixed entrynodes and exitnodes. i figured that was a good start.
then i got distracted again.
SwissTorExit
:P
you know i always have tested exclude node and it always have respected my choice so far in one year but it's the first time only i have this
so it work mostly good :d
arma
apparently if you exclude most of the network, it's more common
all the angry people like to exclude most of the network, for some reason they've never satisfactorily explained to me
SwissTorExit
well, there not so much, it was very old Tor version and a few like nixnix etc
