Hi. I just uncommented 'SocksPort 9050' and 'SocksListenAddress 127.0.0.1' in my torrc and restarded tor (my full config: http://scsys.co.uk:8001/39268) but tor still doesn't listen on 9050. The log says it's going into "Configured hibernation" because I have a bandwidth limit on my relay, does that affect me being able to use tor myself?
gouki
Can/Is it OK to have BandwidthBurst and BandwidthRate with the same value?
Sebastian
it's ok, but not recommended
gouki
Sure thing Sebastian. Thanks.

hi guys
what's up?

Is there a place where one can view all the hidden services ?
Sebastian
no
bja
Then how are they published for every one to find?

Sebastian
they aren't
bja
ok, where can i read how this works, I had the idea that it worked like dns
btw nice to see you Sebastian
Sebastian
Yeah, I'm pretty visible once you see me
there used to be a thing called hidden service authorities. (There still is, for people using old versions of Tor, but let's pretend the dark age were over)
bja
lol
Sebastian
hidden services, after creating a descriptor containing the nodes that act as introduction points, make a descriptor and store it on this authority
thus, hs auths know all the hidden services.
bja
And there is no dig command to look into them?
Sebastian
that's bad, because it means they can censor them.
So we got rid of them
bja
so, how did you overcome this vector of attack?
Sebastian
So, the enlightenment struck and a dht was envisioned
bja
distributed h? t?
Sebastian
in this dht, all nodes with the hsdir flag are able to store hs descriptors. They do this by accepting descritpors from hidden services that they're assigned to. This assignment is just a mathematical function, such that both the hidden service and the client can calculate which relays are responsible for which descriptor at any time.
distributed hash table.
bja
So everything works on a need to know basis right?
Sebastian
Additionally, you can use a shared secret between the client and the hs to make sure that the descriptor is encrypted, so nobody learns the address.

Sebastian: Right now i need to run, i am running out of battery and i just have enough to do a controled shutdown. On monday i have some free time so you can keep enlightening me. Thx and have a nice day bye
Sebastian

actually, the european enlightenment was strongly associated with a rejection of organized religion

how can I make tor not use the current exit node anymore for the current session?
I often get a node that I already had before
anybody alive here?
L0rD`
anybody successfully accessed freenode with tor nowerdays? cause they changed the access protocol to SASL , which isn't supported of xchat per default. Anybody got an idea? script?
I'm talking about this: http://freenode.net/irc_servers.shtml#tor

FeasibilityStudy
L0rD`: I know the Kvirc guys are working on it right now as we speak
I imagine others are too
irssi already supports it
L0rD`
yeah I know.. I tried the irssi script , but somehow it failed compiling cause it missed some DH stuff.. anyhow good news that they are working on it :)
Sebastian
hey SwissTorExit, thanks for your further analysis of bug1243. We know exactly what causes it, though, so now it is just a matter of a bit of patience :)
SwissTorExit
hi Sebastian , great, be happy that's help
it was not on the first time :D
and sure it will great to fix eheheh, so i can test on Lucid and fix Karmic :D
but in fact i don't have missed it, just not appear , so it's good to test a few times ;)
BarkerJr
if I were to increase KeepalivePeriod, would that save much CPU?
Sebastian
save cpu?
BarkerJr
maybe it'd spend less cpu sending keepalives
or would it backfire and spend more cpu polling the dead connections?
Sebastian
that's a client option
if your Tor client uses too much cpu, you're in other kinds of trouble
BarkerJr
hmm, it's not in the client section of the man file
Sebastian
ah
looks like you're right
but still
if a connection gets closed, that's a lot of new cpu use to reestablish it
so this is one of the options that really shouldn't be changed
BarkerJr
does tor accounting get persisted to disk between restarts?
Sebastian
yes
see the state file
BarkerJr
I don't have one yet, cause I haven't enabled it :P
Malkovich
Hello
BarkerJr
hi
so, I want to specify RelayBandwidthRate in addition to the accounting stuff, right?
Sebastian
yup
BarkerJr
egads, accounting doesn't work for relays with ports < 1024
I'll see if I can fix that
I added my suggestions to bug 918
I don't think it'd be a big deal to fix

dr|z3d
bja: ping! marginally available, depending on the endeavour at hand. :)

hm I solved the issue with the irssi script... I didn't have the libcyrpt DH and blowfish pagages.. *facepalm*

great

builds for me
Sebastian
builds, unit tests pass on Snow Leopard.
nothing excessively weird when using as a client
helix
builds and works for me in tor browser bundle
arma
helix: oh, you're building windows builds now? great
helix
well, soon, when I have the build machine + a copy of windows
this is the linux tbb though
arma
oh. we should tell the world we have one of those. if we do again.
helix
we will when I am 100% sure it works. luckily google gave us a bunch of usb sticks so I can test it and play around in general.

even builds for me
