Hello. I'm writting a C++ program that connects through Tor. And uppon certain conditions I need tor to switch to a new identity. Please, how can I send such command to Tor?
bja
tchn: I don't know the answer, but be patient someone will answer it
tchn
thanks
phobos
tchn: if you are using the control port, 'signal newnym' is what you want
tchn
thanks phobos. but it said "514 Authentication required." the same answer when i enter "AUTHENTICATE MyPasswd"
vidalia launched it with cmdline "".\App\tor.exe" -f .\Data\Tor\torrc DataDirectory .\Data\Tor ControlPort 9051 HashedControlPassword 16:FFC95BC2412204A16031D81690E8AD3EE95A39748412A8FAD92680AFF9"

`Orum
sigh
someone ban the troll
kmacy_
he'll just come back somewhere else
daily intrusion it seems

dr|z3d
You speak of who, Orum?
`Orum
well, he's not using tor
kmacy_
dr|z3d: troll spammer
`Orum
oh, he got k-lined
dr|z3d
(Action) wonders how he got banned from the channel.
bja
The idiot who decided to spam oftc
dr|z3d: synthon.oftc.net seems to have banned a lot of people around
dr|z3d
Well, normally oftc are pretty good at just banning offenders.
ps
maybe someone's trying to find a pretext against anonymity
here in Poland goverment recently invented 'registry of forbidden websites'
pretext was: free internet from hazard, kid porn and phishing
kmacy_
Australia has that and plenty of others do
ps
China also
infralite
ps: same in turkey
ps
do you think tor could be banned because of this?
infralite
banned by whom
ps
goverments
well, i meant that troll who told aboug niggers
you know if there are enough pretexts it could be that tor will be banned in our countries
what if some people deliberately spread such 'pretexts'
infralite
it's hard to ban a protocol
ps
no, i meant rather delegalize it
kmacy_
ps: I don't think you need to do anything elaborate, you just tell the media that its a problem and the public accepts that at face value
ps
yes, like terrorism
i have 'objections' to these times where we constantly got new dangers forcing people to give off last parts of their freedom
kmacy_

ps
thanks

kmacy_
sorry for being cynical, but I've been watching this for a while
ps
i understand :)
what could we do?
the key is the communication between all people
kmacy_
-> #nottor
:D
ps
ok
kmacy_
yes
dr|z3d
The key to offtopic conversation is most definitely #nottor. :)
ps
understood:)
Tas
hm, there is no https://www.torproject.org/dist/testing/ with OS X test versions
"The requested URL /dist/testing/ was not found on this server."
nm, it's back
new Vidalia bundle for OS X Intel works fine :-)
dcorson
how do i use a bridge in linux (i.e. without gui like vidalia)? is there no torrc setting?
r1eo
dcorson: "man tor", see options "UseBridges", "Bridge", "UpdateBridgesFromAuthority", decide what you need to write and use it.
pde
hey all
EFF is launching a projec that may be of interest to Tor users and developers
^t
it's at panopticlick.eff.org
https://panopticlick.eff.org
it's an attempt to collect statistics about how identifiable browsers are from the combination of user agent, plugins, fonts and other variables that are visible to websites
murb
pde: have you tested it with torbutton?
pde
thanks to mikeperry 's excellent work, torbutton may be an effective defense against this kind of tracking, but panopticlick should be able to help in confirming that
right now, I'd love it if a bunch of you can try it, with or without torbutton, and tell me if you're seeing sensible results
the data won't be extremely meaningful until it has many thousands of hits
which will require a slashdotting or similar
but it would be good to have some live user testing before then
jn
pde: nice project, might want to move further discussion to #nottor I got this: Warning: Division by zero in /www/panopticlick.eff.org/docs/common.inc.php on line 240
mouna
salut
Runa
hi
mouna
you speek english
Runa
mouna: yes
mouna
i want to now why when i start tor is stop at this step : "etablissement d'une connexion annuaire cryptÊe" sorry for my bad english... thank you
i don't find anything about this on google
Runa
what's your operating system?
mouna
OS X
Sebastian
mouna: Apple broke Tor in a recent update
mouna: We have test packages available that might fix your problems
mouna
ok
Sebastian
https://www.torproject.org/dist/testing/
if you have an intel mac and 10.5 or 10.6, these are for you
Runa
Sebastian: that url is 404
phobos: ^
Sebastian
hrm
that url used to work.
wth.
grml
mouna: so I guess you'll need to wait a bit. We'll release new packages soon.
mib_jxqlal
sebastien, runa, thank you for all
i never seen this chat community, you seem very actif
Runa
:)
mib_jxqlal
so i gone to wait... have a nice day all people... et merci de votre attention.
phobos
i bet the webserver sync didn't happen
there
synced
weasel
hm?
is there a problem with my sync magic?
phobos
it seems slow
or i'm misunderstanding it
i created dist/testing on byblos, kicked off the sync, went to bed
apparently vescum never got the dist/testing dir
until this morning when i ran the sync 3 times in a row
weasel
weasel@vescum:~mirroradm/logs$ zcat mirror.log.4.gz
Starting at Wed Jan 27 00:57:02 UTC 2010
ssh: connect to host byblos.torproject.org port 22: Connection refused
ah.
you think we should ssh whitelist vescum properly?
phobos: it might work better from now on
phobos
was byblos blocking vescum?
ha
Sebastian, Runa, we have 2 webservers now, so if one updates but the other one didn't, that's why the url would work sometimes
Runa
phobos: ok :)
phobos
even globally distributed
now we just need one in china ;)
arma
Sebastian
builds and works as client
weasel
for that you might even find somebody on oftc staff who wants to co-mentor it
Sebastian
curiously, it makes its first circuit, and tells me afterwards that it doesn't have enough descriptors to make a circuit.
helix
builds for me
keb
builds for me but takes a long time with cpu very busy while doing circuit_timeout test in make check
seems to be working
Tas
tor-0.2.2.8-alpha.tar.gz builds fine and make test runs fine on OpenBSD 4.6-current and FreeBSD 8.0
Sebastian
Tas++
Tas
:-)
Sebastian
For being nice on IRC even though you are an openbsd user
Tas
Sebastian: I saw no problems with your latest version, did run normally. hehe there are different kinds of all users, also OpenBSD :-)
they are not all the same :-)
Sebastian
Tas: great, the fix is included in 0.2.2.8 :)
Tas
that's great :-) and I tested the OS X version in /testing, worked fine for me, too
now only PPC is still broken
Sebastian
yup
and 10.4
Tas
yep. I've 10.5.8 server on PPC
and OpenBSD :-)

r1eo
now it's time for play with bug 1209. crypto_pk_copy_full() do not checks what returned RSAPrivateKey_dup() or RSAPublicKey_dup(), well it happened only if out of memory happened, isn't. crash can be prevent but tor need to stop after such. I think.
not all tor even, just cpuworker.
nickm
Tor has never been good at recovering from OOM. Is OOM the only reason that RSA*_dup() can fail?
r1eo
well most better place for exit is only cpuworker, in such case.
I am not sure about null from RSA*_dup(), but tor check it at other funcs.
and some time it's not fatal.
tor_tls_context_new() as result of such null can return -1; and run_scheduled_events() ok with it.
"XXX is it a bug here, that we just keep going? -RD"
nickm
If this is really an OOM bug, it's strange that it would appear right after SIGHUP, and not (say) while sending traffic around.
r1eo
1208 triggered it.
nickm
ah. heap corruption.
r1eo
and memory leak.
"Commit: aec4aea19045fa9fe1c80bd032bb97ad06bbf44e"
nickm
but there are so many mallocs and so few of them are for keys specifically reallocated on SIGHUP.
r1eo
then it was corruption.
even if it's rare or impossible to happens while memory ok, it need to check for null and then react on it anyway.

heh

(I'm sure there's something I can program in that's closer to line-noise, but I can't think what. Forth?)
(I'd say "perl", but it is possible to write clean-looking perl. I don't think you can write pretty roff.)

athaba
hello, are chinese people able to join this channel?
phobos
we allow all, except spammers
athaba
I mean, don't they get blocked by their firewall?
phobos
they can use tor
or other circumvention tools
athaba
I just thought if it would sense to use an irc bot to distribute bridges
the question is, if they'd block whole IRC networks
phobos
they block by IP
and dns
athaba
yeah, but would they block an IRC network which gives away bridges or wouldn't they, because the anger of the people would be to big. I'm not only talking about OFTC
misc
well, what is nice with the idea of a bot is that the bot can be moved to another channel or network
