What's "Tunable Tor"? :#
BarkerJr
as in a feature request?
mackan
Not sure, people were talking about it earlier
BarkerJr
I would think it'd be refering to the tuncfg daemon in linux that lets you create virtual network adapters that point to a tunnel
just a thought :)
mackan
okay

hi guys
I'm running tor on my mac and I have it setup as a rlay
I'm using the latest stable, are there big advantages for using the alpha instead/
?
I'm happy with tor as it is, but if it helps the community, I'd be willing to use the latest alpha instead
marh
anybody here using onioncat? i can't seem to be able to ping the irc, dns or jabber services as listed at http://[fd87:d87e:eb43:f683:64ac:73f9:61ac:9a00]/.. this service directory itself (as well as e.g. the 'shared music' site works so i think the problem is not on my end.. any idea what might be the problem? or are these services just all down?

tr3nt_
is there a guide to config irssi to use tor?
dr|z3d
tr3nt_: Sure. On the wiki.
lakse
hi
imhaing a hard time trying to connect firefox through tor
through irc it works just fine
anyone awake
dr|z3d
lakse: Tell us how you're trying to do that.
lakse
i went through the docs
i first tried the tor button for firefox
that doesnt work, it just says add exception or something
and page doesnt load
so i tried manual settings
and still doesnt work
# Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
# Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is
working.
dr|z3d
Ok. So, you're running an http proxy there locally? Polipo? Privoxy?
lakse
no
just vidalia
dr|z3d
...
lakse
?
dr|z3d
And you say you read the docs? *chuckle*
lakse
i dont have privoxy running here
dr|z3d
Time to reread those.
Which is likely why you're having issues.
lakse
what am i missing here
i should run privoxy too?!

dr|z3d
The recommended setup is http proxy (polipo or privoxy) -> Tor, with Torbutton handling Firefox leaks.
lakse
yeah it works now
but horribly slow
like 10 secs to load google
in your older versions without privoxy it worked faster
trhats why i avoided privoxy
dr|z3d
Sure.
That's normal.
lakse
the page loads now but its horribly slow
dr|z3d
You can swap out privoxy for polipo for better performance.
Also, remember your page loads are conditional upon the circuit they're using.
lakse
what do you mean
dr|z3d
If your access seems especially slow, use Vidalia to create a "new identity".. ie a new circuit.
lakse
i clicked new identity
dr|z3d
A circuit is the Tor proxy chain, in essence. Entry -> Middle -> Exit.
lakse
ok
its a lil faster
dr|z3d
A new identity or circuit will route your Tor traffic over a new chain.
lakse
privoxy refreshed
and now its a lil faster
so everytime its slow?
so everytime its slow i just use a new identity?
dr|z3d
Sure, with the caveat that Tor will never be blazingly fast.
lakse
it doesnt have to be blazing fast
but atleast nominal speeds
10 secs to load a page?
yeah its slow again
dr|z3d
That's fast. I've waited 10 minutes before. :)
lakse
lol
your older versions were much faster actually
even loading tor takes a lot of time
dr|z3d
That's perceptual.
lakse
now if i loaded vidalia
it takes roughly 15 inutes to load
that was not the case before
dr|z3d
Say what? Vidalia takes 15 minutes to load???
lakse
yep
dr|z3d
Something is VERY wrong with your setup.
lakse
i dont know
dr|z3d
Or you're running Vidalia on a memory constrained 386.
(Action) chuckles.
What OS?
lakse
1gb RAM here
xp
dr|z3d
You got something majorly wrong there.
lakse
i didnt modify any of the setup files like we had to before
dr|z3d
Vidalia should be taking at most 30 seconds to load on a slow system, definitely not 15 minutes.
lakse
self executable file
it takes me 15 mins
i practically had my lunch and came back and it was still loading
dr|z3d
Your system has issues, that's all I know.
lakse
i cant say that
dr|z3d
I can. :)
lakse
there's not too many apps here
i dont overload this system either
when im running tor
itsjust firefox and irc
dr|z3d
That's irrelevant. If Vidalia's taking 15 minutes to actually load, you have major issues. That's not speculative.
lakse
such as?
the first few bars arw fast
but as it reaches 75% of the loading bar
dr|z3d
Can you uninstall your current Vidalia, and then go grab the latest (dev) release and install that, and tell us if there's any difference?
lakse
it sits there
waiting
dr|z3d
Ah.
So.
You're not actually talking about Vidalia _loading_.
lakse
well if i launch vidalia
dr|z3d
You're talking about Vidalia attempting to connect to Tor...
Subtle difference.
lakse
right
so why is that/
dr|z3d
Enable info level logging in Vidalia and see if you see any issues.
You can pastebin your logs if you want.
That's pastebin, not paste in here :)
lakse
where's this level logging
dr|z3d
Message logs, cunningly.
lakse
ah
i went into settings
yha
i think my logs are enabled
i see its like filled up
i get a warning
Dec 09 07:22:38.241 [Warning] Your server (92.99.163.132:443) has not managed to confirm that its ORPort is reachable. Please check your firewalls, ports, address, /etc/hosts file, etc.
dr|z3d
Ah, so you're running a server as well.. hmm.. well, that message indicates a server issue.. port opened and mapped correctly on your router?
lakse
i dont run a server
i have a router
Dec 09 07:22:38.241 [Warning] Your server (92.99.163.132:9030) has not managed to confirm that its DirPort is reachable. Please check your firewalls, ports, address, /etc/hosts file, etc.
dr|z3d
"Your server (92.99.163.132:443) has not managed to confirm that its ORPort is reachable." indicates that you're attempting to run a Tor server.
lakse
oh
lol
im not trying to run a tor server
i jsut want to connect via tor
:D
dr|z3d
So turn off the Tor server option in Vidalia.
lakse
where's that?
dr|z3d
You find it, you turned it on! :P
lakse
i cant find anything about servers there
uncheck relay tor traffic?
kans
that sounds right
dr|z3d
Indeed.
lakse
ok unchecked
run as client?
dr|z3d
Indeed. You want that. And restart Tor now from Vidalia.
lakse
ok
ooh
that was fast
connected
wow
lol
dr|z3d
(Action) rejoices.
lakse
ah thanks
its much faster
ok thanks, later dr|z3d , kans
good day!

floppyears
is there a huge advantage for using the alpha version?
dr|zed
floppyears: Early access to new features.
(and bugfixes).
floppyears
dr|z3d: but are there a lot of nice features in the current alpha version? I'm not knowledgeable enough about tor to make sense of most of the stuff on the web
dr|z3d
floppyears: If you're in any doubt, use stable. If you want to check new features, check the changelog.
(linked on the advanced downloads page).
floppyears
thanks dr|z3d
plytheman
can someone help me get tor to work? I'm on crunchbang and have tor, vidalia, and torbutton on FF but it say's I'm not using tor when I check on tor's site
even tho vidalia tells me I'm connected through tor network
I'm trying to get a UK ip to watch bbc stuff fwiw
murb
plytheman: you might be better off finding a uk based proxy service.
using tor for this will be slow and frustrating.
plytheman
yeah, I kinda assumed that, but figured I'd give it a shot
any other way you can think of to get a uk ip outside of tor then?
murb
probably but -> #nottor
plytheman
aight
thanks
vasco
hi
i just started a tor rely
i set the average and max speed on 1000 and 1200 KBps
when i look via vidalia on the tor network map to my exit node, i see a bandwidth from ~240KBps
why is this so much lower than my speed limits?
floppyears
vasco: I think it uses the lower of your two speeds, the upload speed is usually much lower than the down speed
plytheman
well, regardless of trying to get on a uk ip, can someone help me figure out why im not connecting to tor?
dr|z3d, should all my ports be the same too?
on vidalia and now the page about configuring polipo it says to use port 9050
but all my FF and Torbutton ports are 8118
Sebastian_
plytheman: you should simply read the docs
https://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en
plytheman
thanks, I'll look through that then
