(Action) appears for a bit
Sebastian
hi arma
For the new Safelogging option, should I make it so that a user that says SafeLoggin 0, 1 in their config gets a nice message to please make up their mind, or should I go with the current implementation of "if in doubt, safelog more"
and when this is decided, it would be very nice to get a nice sentence for the manpage
reflecting that decision
arma
the safest answer is to put some checks in config.c and warn about unreasonable combinations
basically, if 1 is set, it had better be the only choice. and same with 0.
and by warn, i might even mean reject.
Sebastian
ok
I didn't go that route, because we don't do it for other similar options
but I can.
arma
yeah. this one is about security though, so it seems more reasonable
the others, if somebody chooses something weird, we can say "well, yeah, don't do that then" and no harm happens
Sebastian
right, the way I implemented it no harm can happen
meaning if they say anything that doesn't make sense, we safelog more
so if they say "relay, 1" everything is safelogged
and if they say 1, 0 everything is safelogged, too
arma
hm. that sounds fine too.
both approaches will do what we want
Sebastian
I suspect most people won't change that option until we tell them too, anyways
arma
yep
so, "try not to add too many lines of code" is the next-in-line heuristic to look at

Sebastian
that's the one I looked at when writing it like I did
it's pretty easy, actually
arma
sounds good
Sebastian
ok. I ask this because I asked in here for a suggestion for a manpage entry, and keb didn't quite understand my explanation, so I hope to get a better sentence from someone, maybe you :-)
The idea is: The default is 1, like it used to be. This means safelog everything
arma
ok. i disappear to go meet my ride. will read the backlog in an hour or so and answer.
Sebastian
you can specify 0 => safelog nothing, or a combination of relay, client to safelog relay/client related log messages
great.
if you specify anything, you start out with "safelog nothing", and then your options are applied on top to safelog more things (that's the way it is implemented, but apparently a really poor choice of words to convey meaning to human being)

redarrow: Mind providing details on what aspects of arm are slow for you right now? Is it particular pages or the whole interface?
BarkerJr: not sure what sort of documentation you're looking for but there's the readme (https://tor-svn.freehaven.net/svn/arm/trunk/README) and site (http://www.atagar.com/arm/)
Sebastian
arma: maybe you come up with something, will read backlog in the morning.

hi
btw
didnt tor have an emails ervice where you can send emails annonymously
as in it hides the sender's id
arma
lalvs: not really. mixminion and mixmaster do that, but they're not as convenient.
lalvs
oh
i thought you guys had some sort of an email project that was tailored to do that
so what do you recommend
to send anonnymous emails
without the header or sender's id

allo - wie kann ich den Autostart des IM abschalten bei Vidalia fuer Windows? Danke!
Sebastian
area5111: hallo, das ist eigentlich ein englischer Channel. Falls du kein Englisch sprichst, versuche es in #tor-de
area5111
Oh, sorry - how can I disable the automatic start of the IM on Vidalia for Windows? Thanks
Sebastian
Which bundle did you download? The Tor Browser Bundle?

area5111
yes - the non instal version that runs un USB-Stick, etc.
dr|z3d
Best to use the standalone Vidalia or the Vidalia/Tor bundle, possibly.
Sebastian
area5111: do you sometimes want the im software?
If not, download the bundle without the im in the name
area5111
OK I will check that - never saw this
Sebastian
area5111: you will want https://www.torproject.org/torbrowser/dist/tor-browser-1.2.10_en-US.exe https://www.torproject.org/torbrowser/dist/tor-browser-1.2.10_en-US.exe.asc
the bundle without instant messenger isn't linked from the easy download page, which is probably why you missed it.
area5111
great found it under "See advanced choices" - thx a lot
redarrow
Sebastian: is there a reason why the Browser without IM is no longer linked?
phobos
because most people want anonymous IM
Sebastian
redarrow: Probably to not confuse people with choices as much.
heh, really?
phobos
we had enough requets for it
not so much anonymous im per se, but so a local isp can't watch their conversations
area5111
I think it is a little anoying
redarrow
phobos: but I think it might be a problem if I use the same account I used the day before at home with tor
sorry, the sentence is stupid ... did you get the point?
phobos
yes
pidgin has otr, and it pre-configured, perhaps that's what people want
i have no idea
area5111
I peronally think most of the people like to use tor mainly for Browsing
phobos
ok
most of asia and middle east seem to like instant message more than browsing
redarrow
area5111: I think so too, because I think the IM is only useful if you can trust your SSL and I think without changes in the settings e.g. ICQ is not ssl encrypted that's a reason why I never would use ICQ with tor although it is pidgin ...
area5111
I use Tor becaue Im in china, for IM i personaly don?t need it
so my reason to use Tor is more to get around the Great Firewall then to anonymise myself
redarrow
yes, china is a very big problem with there great chinese firewall
area5111
I have to use bridges but that work quite good
Thanks for your help Sebastian - bye all
Sebastian
hrm
I wonder if it is just that some people don't understand that 'im" is supposed to mean instant messaging
phobos
possibly
redarrow
Sebastian: I think most people don't know that there is something else than the one IM they use ... in germany most people use icq/aol in china i think QQ is very popular
phobos
i agree with that
people know the protocol they use more than they know the client
Sebastian
that's also true
phobos
conveniently, most protocol providers also provide a client

Could some body tell me, please, what is the best way to socksing shell, xterm for example, actually konsole.
As i understood https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO, torsocks is very green.
Socat is restrictive, only for one port, or for all system
Dante is so smart..
i have seen, torkify, from tork package, do it well..
what is the same
torify or tokify?)
