hello, is there a way to point an sh script to tor?
arma
torify?
depends what the sh script does. sh scripts are not network applications.
redarrow
arma: it is a bash script i found in a linux magazine which uses wget ... I want to test the programm but I'm not sure if there will be punishment for using it
arma
what does it do?
redarrow
it looks for package numbers
arma
redarrow: hm. see the instructions for configuring wget to use an http proxy, on the torifyhowto part of the wiki.

thanks, I'll have a lookk

Can anyone tell me how the EXTENDCIRCUIT command is used? What is the purpose and what are valid values for CircuitID and ServerSpec args?

JC_Yang
can anyone confirm that whether the xmarks.com is temporarily down?
keb
works for me
JC_Yang
i can't connect to it even with tor...
keb
i dunno why they would block users from china
iti s working for me inside Tor as well
although i dont see the fancy stylesheets
going via sweden or germany
JC_Yang
tor works for other sites, it seems that just xmarks.com don't work
keb
what is the error message you get
JC_Yang
i haven't try yet, but i've notice something, do i have to do dns via tor?
keb
yes if your internet provider is blocking access to some sites
or you dont want them to know what sites you are looking up
if you use an http proxy like polipo it will send your dns via tor
JC_Yang
restart and try that
it works again. the last upgrade foxyproxy to the latest version disable the very important option by default. now i do dns via tor, it's ok now
Sebastian__
JC_Yang: oh, you shouldn't use foxyproxy to toggle Tor
try torbutton
JC_Yang
why? foxyproxy can do url filtering very good...
Sebastian
There are a ton of ways to deanonymize you otherwise
And exit nodes may insert malicious javascript, which Torbutton would help to protect you against
I guess if you use Tor for reachability only it is fine
JC_Yang
yes, you're right... i haven't considered the security problem yet. can i disable javascript with noscript? do you mean a site should be loaded via multiple urls so that it should be handled completely via tor to make me more safe rather than simple url filtering? i feel that url filtering is pretty convenient, so...
Sebastian
The best way is to have to different profiles, and never turn Tor off in one of them
dr|z3d
NoScript, CS Lite and Request Policy all recommended, as well as Adblock Plus and the EasyList+EasyPrivacy subscription. :)
Sebastian
I know that is inconvenient to most
If you use noscript, note that a) there is a default whitelist that you have to clear b) there are never "trusted" sites if you cannot trust your network
JC_Yang
profiles? how?
dr|z3d
Also for NoScript you'll want to apply some restrictions to trusted sites as well, like automatic loading of plugin content.
Sebastian
I don't know, I use two different browsers for Tor and non-tor
dr|z3d
JC_Yang: "firefox -no-remote -P" for the second profile/instance.

JC_Yang
ok, i would give it a trial, thanks
dr|z3d
You can run two self contained profiles that way simultaneoualy, without risk of bleeding history/cache betwixt the two.
So, one for normal browsing, one for tor browsing, with differing extensions, perhaps.
JC_Yang
you inspire me, >-<

keb: thanks for posting the link -- but my question is about trying to understand the spec. I've been reading the specs -- but I'm not sure exactly what they mean in this part.
For the EXTENDCIRCUIT command the spec shows basic syntax of the command -- but I'm not clear on what it does or what the valid arguments for "ServerSpec" might be and also not sure what values for "CircuitID" might be valid.
keb
this design doc might help, it details how circuits are built step by step https://git.torproject.org/checkout/tor/master/doc/design-paper/tor-design.html#subsec:circuits
wrench
keb: that IS helpful. thanks!

Hi! Torbutton bug using Firefox 3.6b4 - Just filled a bug on Flyspray. Is is only me ?
https://bugs.torproject.org/flyspray/index.php?do=details&id=1163
keb
considering it is a beta Firefox, shouldnt you file the bug with Mozilla?
Noino
keb: possibly; doubt it, since this is a problem with a FF addon (torbutton) which is not updated for and not supported with 3.6
dr|z3d
Noino: Lost bookmarks?
Noino
bookmarks & history are invisible by Firefox when the extension is loaded
dr|z3d
Yup. That's a known issue with out-of-band Firefoxs.
Noino
personal toolbar empty, too (since that is displaying part of the bookmarks)
dr|z...: oh so it's well known
dr|z3d
Yup.
Noino
is Mike Perry (spell?) working on an update ?
dr|z3d
It is, Noino. Don't use beta releases. And, I think 3.0.x is currently only _officially_ supported.
And, sure, mikeperry is working on Torbutton, but don't expect patches for non-release builds.
Noino
i normally don't use beta Foxes - but non beta 3.5.5 has been a ctastrophe, so I tried the 3.6
how to contact Mike ? I'm willing to test his betas
