help

I was having problems with getting my relay up and running, I forwarded the ports in my router and added an exception in my firewall but the firewall was still blocking incoming connections
if i add the sudo /sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --destination-port 9001 -j ACCEPT will that create the rule for my firewall?
Just^A^Guy
..and while you are at it, any info re setting up IRC with TOR?? (I asked about an hour ago ...you are the only person talking here so-far) lol
astechgeek
let me see if i can find the torify link
Just^A^Guy
that would be super. I am not having much success at it...

astechgeek
https://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorifyHOWTO
that link has instructions for setting up applications to use tor
I set up my xchat to use tor in a few seconds it was pretty simple
Just^A^Guy
anyone here using mIRC??
(thanks for the assistance so-far, astechgeek!)

SwissTorExit
hi Just^A^Guy
Just^A^Guy
howdy
SwissTorExit
sure no problem, you need only config it to use socks5 et install ssl
be sure that the irc you want to join accept Tor too :P
$well open the menu and look about network connections
cannot help more: so0cks5 localhost (127.0.0.1) :6697 i.e
or depend the port to access put ssl are on 6697
G-Lo
even for those that don't accept Tor, there's still a way to connect, thanls to the .exit feature

Just^A^Guy

Hi, I'm working on the openSUSE package. Can you give an ETA for the 0.2.1.21 release addressing the SSL renegotiation thing?
Sebastian_
tacit: hey, I'm unaware of a concrete date. If you can't reach arma here, try sending mail to tor-assistants
nsa
or: bogdro committed revision 21099 (/website/trunk): Mainetance/polish translation update.
udo
ah, ok, the openssl -1.0.0 fix is in git
tacit
Yes I'm actually looking to release an updated package.
Sebastian_
tacit: I figured
swerve_
how can I change the IP in tor?
Runa
swerve_: just disconnect and connect again
Sebastian_
swerve_: are you using Vidalia to control Tor? There's a "new identity" button that you can use to get a new IP on future exit connections

swerve_
no-coffee moment; I just turned off and on the browser config and forgot to restart tor :P
Sebastian_
always restarting Tor just to get a new circuit places a high load on the network, and is not recommended
swerve_
what is vidalia? does it work in linux?
Sebastian_
It is a Tor controller gui, and yes, it works in Linux.
https://www.torproject.org/vidalia/
You probably have to compile it yourself, though
swerve_
it doesn't seem to be avail. in my distro (arch) - i'll have to check the user repos
oh - thx for the link
arch has it in the AUR - i'll install it from there and check it out... brb....
wow - vidalia takes a minute at least to connect
tor connects in about 2-3 seconds using the script
udo
how come?
Runa
swerve_: what script?
swerve_
the init script for tor in my distro
Sebastian_
swerve_: it might be that Vidalia is setting a different data directory, so Tor has to download all directory information again
The next time you start it it should be faster
swerve_
there's definitely some disconnect between tor and vidalia - vid. can't detect a running tor instance when it starts
but it recognizes that the socket's in use if i hit the start button
Sebastian_
your already running Tor instance most likely doesn't have the control port open
Without that, Vidalia cannot connect to Tor, of course
swerve_
connects faster after initial startup - confirmed!
redarrow
moin|hi, is it possible to reload a to /usr/local/ installed version without stopping it before? I'd like to edit my torrc and need to reload it but I'm running a server and don't want to kill it before
Sebastian_
just send a sighup
redarrow
Sebastian_: How do I do this?
Sebastian_
kill -HUP `pidof tor`
BarkerJr
:)
redarrow
Sebastian_: I did not know that this works
BarkerJr
it does... you can verify it in your logs
redarrow
BarkerJr: yes, I had arm running and I told me that the command worked
BarkerJr
I need to figure out arm some day
is there a document about it somewhere?
redarrow
hmm, I wrote mails to atagar and asked him ;)
BarkerJr: but at the moment arm is not fast for me and I don't know why
some weeks ago when I started to host a server for the first time it was faster I have in mind
