On Mac OS X, when you set Tor as a SOCKS-proxy in the AirPort-settings: Does anyone know if the DNS-request will also go through Tor as well?
marlowe
bleakgadfly: if I recall correctly, it depends on what version of SOCKS and the applications
bleakgadfly
Hmm, Okay, marlowe. Mac OS X doesnt really specify what version of SOCKS.

question: my chat client keeps bugging me because oftc's certificate is for irc.oftc.net but the server names it uses are like charm,oftc.net.
how do I tell it that i only care if the main domain matches?

whoops wrong chan
i'm taking this to #oftc

Drive by comments are certainly a sign of competance though, OFTC doesn't want IRCd names to match DNS names because we want you to use rotation, that doesn't mean we sign each server as irc.oftc.net, the server reports itself as charm.oftc.net the CN of the cert is charm.oftc.net.

it occurs to me that one way to fix his on my end is to pick a server and always connect to it
which would regretably break your round robin ness

How can I see whether my node (vnixis FEEC9933F2CAFAE24AECA265628F11DF49F7BEB2) is available to the network and accepting connections through it? It exceeded its bandiwidth cap which I increased and restarted it, but it still isn't getting any more traffic
And it's not listed on http://torstatus.kgprog.com anymore

xtoaster
getting off the list maybe a bad sign
Goldstein
how attached are you to your name/key
avar
not at all
Goldstein
you might have better luck getting new id
right now the server might be saying dont route to him cuz he's done for the day/week
avar
(Action) tries changing & restarting
ah, so the network is made aware of AccountingStart/AccountingMax ?
Goldstein
maybe
avar
I changed by nickname and removed /var/lib/tor/fingerprint and restarted, the nickname is different but the fingerprint is the same.
Goldstein
you'd have to remove whatever the key was that it used to gen the fingerprint
avar
where are those keys kept?
Goldstein
dunno
xtoaster
if the identity is changed, you have to wait another 4h or so before getting published.
avar
ah, right
I nuked my keys and generated the fingerprint again & restarted, let's see how that goes, thanks:)
Sebastian
avar: that shouldn't have been necessary at all. Since you still have bandwidth accounting set up, Tor would have waited a bit to make sure you don't exceed the limit

Hello could anybody give me exact info on using DCC with Tor?
dr|z3d
TorLover: Not possible.
You can't establish a direct client to client connection over Tor, so your co-communicant ends up talking to the exit node, not you.
TorLover
What I'm curious about is if the other point can learn my IP if he initiates a DCC connection
I happened to accept a DCC request on Undernet and it worked
dr|z3d
Then it may well be totally bypassing Tor.
TorLover
I'm using MIRC, it is set up to use 9050 for DCC as well. How could it bypass Tor?
xtoaster
i guess its not that easy. since ddc is peer to peer connection. and tor is a client to server connection.
dr|z3d
I've never got DCC to work on Tor, and I'm reliably informed that technically it shouldn't. Make of that what you will.

TorLover
Thank you.
One more question. Sometimes I see 4 participants in a row in my Vidalia Network View. Could it be more than 3?
dr|z3d
4 for hidden service access, perhaps?
xtoaster
currently not
TorLover
Yes
dr|z3d
if you're accessing hidden services, you'll see 4 hops.
TorLover
Very good, thank you very much.

Hi peeps, i have looked in the documentation but can't find the info is it possible in the config file to set so Tor automatic get's a new ip after a while?
Nehyx
caroz: You can make a script wich reloads automatically tor
But if you're using tor (like me in irc), connection will reset
caroz
okay yea i tought maybe it would be possible to set an timer in the config file
but i will take a look at that
xtoaster
the circuite is automatically updated every 3 min or so.
as far as i know there is no settings for this intervals
caroz
yea but to set it so it make an new identity aswell after 15 minutes
or so
xtoaster
y delay?
Nehyx
caroz: You can make a script wich executes >> /etc/init.d/tor restart
caroz
but i run Tor on Windows ;)
Nehyx
ah :P
xtoaster
iirc , there are settings binding website to certain exit.
if you have login issuse maybe that would be what you need
Sebastian
Nehyx: restarting Tor is a bad idea. you can just reload it (send a hup signal) which won't kill your active connections.
Nehyx
Sebastian: Do you know with what command can I do it?
Sebastian
Nehyx: "/etc/init.d/tor reload" if you have a reasonable init script, "kill -HUP `pidof tor`" otherwise
Nehyx
Sebastian: But if I do it while I am connected to IRC, will my nick disconnect?
Sebastian
no
Nehyx
Sebastian: Okay, thanks
Malkovich
Hello
performeR
Hi
Nehyx
Malkovich: Hi
onere_
hi guys, happy holidays.
slackel

onere_
I was just wondering if the openssl compatibility issue has been fixed yet?
slackel
happy holidays to u and everyone
onere_
I haven't been able to use tor on mac os x for a month now
slackel
i don't know about that, sry
onere_
Bummer :)
fabi
anyone here familiar with the new bw authority voting stuff?
slackel
nope
not me
Goldstein
ask me about approval voting
fabi
approval voting?
Goldstein
yes
fabi
I have problems with setting up the new bw autority voting mechanism in my private testing Tor Network
Goldstein
yeah i'm just talking about an election voting system
fabi
I have 3 Auth. Diretories with two of them running the network scanners. Both produce a correct bandwidth file
but in consensus vote these aren't included. Only the bw observed value from descriptors is used
